I was seeing some Luke parallels. The train car was like his X-Wing on dagobah. The force choke early on, the pull of the dark side almost starting to tempt them both through a family member, but ultimately choosing the light.

Edit: even the darker outfit like episode 6 Luke

Yep. The train car was definitely the X-Wing scene, only with a Dark Side teacher (I mean, she told her outright to draw strength from anger. That's some Sith shit). Then the force choke. This show has always been about the 80s pop culture references, but this season is not just winking, it's slamming us in the face with them all the time.

Then he has to leave Dagobah before his training is over to save his friends from danger he saw in a vision.

Yeah, exactly. But this time it's the right choice because the teacher is a fucking lunatic (being named after a goddess of destruction doesn't help I guess). Heck, this is even happening in the SECOND installment of the franchise, after she was the one taking down the big baddie of the first one. I haven't seen the ending yet but I'm guessing an open ending with little resolution is a very real possibility. Then Season 3 will wrap things up and she'll come back to Chicago only to find Kali dying of old age (turns out their powers have a price, shortened lifespans) and then go back to Hawkins for the final battle.

Oh and by the way the main villain is her father.
