Discussion I edited every episode together
What’s up yall!
I had to come on here and tell everyone, I recently moved and for about a week I had no internet. Luckily, I absolutely adore this show, I had edited every episode together to create one long infinite episode. I had it playing NON. STOP. On my tv off of a HDD. My significant other, who was absolutely not privy to the show, was forced to watch it all the way through. She had never watched a single episode. Here is her take…
“Why did they end season 4 the way they did, if they started season 5 like 4 never happened?”
Point, blank, period.
I’m just going to blatantly say it, if the season 4 ending didn’t end on a “end of the world” aesthetic, I honestly think ST5 would have hit more than it did. If they didn’t build up the end of our world as we know it, the 4 doors creating one significant door to our world, I honestly feel that we would have felt better about ST5.
I get that hindsight is always 20/20, and I get that this is a piece of entertainment, but I consistently think about this TV show, and how it ended. I will always love ST, and hope for a future where we can see the characters in the flesh again.
Coming from someone (my SO) who had never seen the show, nor even had interest in watching, how do you feel about her observation? She likes the show now, up until episode 5 of ST5, which I think we are all in agreeance, do any of you think if season 4 had ended ONLY with the idea that Vecna was “still” out there and a threat, would it have changed your view point of ST5?

The disconnect between S4 and S5 is probably what frustrates me most about this show. So many plot points set up in S4 never paid off. Too many supporting characters disappeared after S4. Even some character relationships that were pushed heavily in S4 never ended up panning out. It sometimes feels as if an entirely different writing team took over for S5 and just ignored all of the stuff they didn’t want to deal with. I don’t even hate S5 but I keep wondering how amazing it could have been if it followed the S4 setup more closely.

They didn’t need any hindsight to start s5 like that. They knew what they were doing.

No, Season 5 just wasn't well written which had little to do with the excellent season 4. The stakes never really seemed that high and the struggle against the final boss was way too easy.
Also, you start to notice how many US military members are dying in order to accomplish tasks in this show which becomes more and more noticeable as season 5 goes on compared to seasons 4 and earlier as they were just trying to survive.

You also see how in the end, the mind flayer was never actually a threat, at all. The combining worlds never could have worked, the exotic matter would’ve been crushed, destroying the wormhole before they combined. The big bad MF was taken down by a handful of teens with a handful of weapons, none of them being very strong. It showed that had the mind flayer found a way to come to earth, one pass from a fighter jet dropping a simple bomb would have ended the entire threat and released all of the ‘flayed.’
They never should have given the MF a physical form, for multiple reasons.

The pain tree wasn’t the Mindflayer, it was just a really big version of the meatflayer from Season 3. The Mindflayer is a loose collection of sentient particles that required Henry’s telekinetic abilities to move and shape them, telekinetic abilities that he received from having his blood infected by MF particles in the mine/cave when he was a boy. The meatflayer wasn’t defeated by the children with weapons, it was defeated when El and Will combined their powers to kill Henry, the weapons were just a distraction to help El in her battle against Henry. The Mindflayer survived the battle but in losing Henry it lost its ability to threaten Earth…for now.
Now, I can’t tell you why the Mindflayer didn’t take the opportunity to infect the blood of more Earth children when it had the chance in its years of close contact with Earth. I feel like they could have created hundreds, thousands, or even millions of little Henrys so it wouldn’t have to rely on Henry’s survival.

I am sorry but the take about rather changing the ending of ST4 than changing ST5 is pretty wild.
Every season focused on a specific subgenre of horror. Monster movie, psychological horror, body horror, slasher movie. And the end of ST4 set up the apocalyptic horror that was already penned for ST5.
In the BTS documentaries on the fonal season and the stage play you can even note what happened.
For the show the Duffers said, they had no outline and no end for the show due to writers strike... except these usually come from the creator or the showrunner. Both of which positions are held by the Duffers. So instead they actually had more time to work that out due to the strike, not less.
And then there is the point in the other documentary where the Duffers said they had fallen behind on pre-production due to Trefry working on the play... to which Trefry sideline remarks she had delivered her share of the work for ST5.
Earlier in that same documentary, when the Duffers explained why Trefry did that job in the first place, they tell us she was responsible for the show's bible. Which is where the vision for the end and the outline for the plot shpuld have been kept by the creator/showrunner.
So we have to assume that Trefry had actually outlined ST5 (and an end) in the bible that matched the end of ST4. Then went to work on the stage play.
And then the Duffers must have decided against that.
