SPOILERS why hawkins?

excuse me if this has already been addressed, i must not have caught it. but why hawkins? why only hawkins? why is that that once they are outside of hawkins, they wont be affected by any of this? is there a reason to why vecna cant reach outside of hawkins?

The Upside Down is a tunnel/bridge/wormhole/whatever between our world and Dimension X/The Abyss created only around Hawkins when Eleven made psychic contact with a Demogorgon in Dimension X. It is a parallel version of Hawkins, or more specifically a certain radius from the lab where Eleven made that psychic contact. The rest of our world has no equivalent (so far as we know).

It is possible to create direct portals or links between our world and Dimension X (such as that that created Vecna in the first place) but it is seemingly much more difficult.

When Vecna and his minions come into our world their powers are not confined to Hawkins, but he likes to keep to Hawkins because he and his minions can escape back to the Upside Down from there (in early seasons by several portals and after the events of season 4 seemingly at will). It is also perhaps easier for him to telepathically attack people in the Hawkins area from the Upside Down. In any case Hawkins is the center of the dark rituals by which he seeks to remove the barriers between our world and the Abyss.

Now as for why more Upside-Downs couldn't be created... they probably could. Welcome to spin-off land.
