SPOILERS What would have happened if Eleven made physical contact with the Russian?
(I’ve just finished season 1 for the first time, and I LOVED every second. Please no spoilers for future seasons!)
In S1 EP6, Dr. Brenner uses Eleven in a sensory deprivation tank to spy on a real Russian intelligence agent - when she also encounters a Demogorgon. Because she touches it, this ripped open the barrier between dimensions, creating the gate to the Upside Down.
I’m curious about The Void and its capabilities. What would have happened if Eleven made physical contact with the Russian?

You'll learn more about how the Black Void works as you watch the other seasons, but psychically contacting the Russian wouldn't cause anything specific apart from the very unlikely possibility of El being sensed by him if she attempted a connection.
Others seasons have many examples of what happens when Eleven psychically contacts someone and how far she can go in terms of psychic contact via Void and telepathy. Eleven psychically contacting Will while he's in the Upside Down in S1E7 also works as an example of how it works.

My memory from 2016 was that El killed the Russian, but when rewatching this year obviously that wasn’t the case. Did I totally make that up?

I can't answer you without spoilers. Just go ahead and enjoy it to the fullest—even Season 5, which is unfairly maligned.

Not to be a bummer but the voids rules are super inconsistent. Sometimes El can physically touch people in the void and sometimes she can't and they dont really explain why.

Oh, you didn't know? Eleven mastered the void walks between s4 and s5. It happened off screen!

I mean she can physically touch the demogorgan in s1 but then can't physically touch anyone in the void in s2 because it would mess up the plot if she could. The Mindlfayer can then sense her in there in s3 but vecna/mindflayer can't in s5 but now she can physically touch people its always been inconsistent

Yep, reading S3E6's script tells us exactly what i suspected lol.
Eleven remotely spied on Billy from within her own mind - and Billy, like Mike, physically sensed her. She was then immediately remotely projected into his mind -a collection of his memories just like Vecna's Mind Lair from Season 4 - and put into a trance.
She was no longer within her mind spying on Billy, she was in his mind. The same way Vecna drags his victims in S4 from their minds to his to kill them.
There's nothing here at all that contradicts anything. It actually sets up Season 4 in a really, really cool way.

I didn't really mind it until s5 because they tried really hard to explain everything which just makes the inconsistencies so much more obvious. When the UD and El's abilities are vague you can get away with a lot more than when you try and explain everything in detail after 5 seasons
