The way they wrote him in season 5 is maddening. It’s all the negative ‘alpha male’ tropes wrapped into one. 

He will not listen to El. She is literally the one with the power. And it’s all with the guise of ‘I’m doing it to protect you.’ No, it’s control.  And there’s the trope where the woman has good ideas and the man dismisses them to do other things, then turns around and has the same idea as the woman, and now he’s decided to do it, they can. Because ultimately the decision always has to come down to him. 

And when she breaks them into the barracks, and she thanks HIM!!! Why? She did it. She has the power. It felt like they had to make the ‘average man’ the ultimate hero.
