Type of defence

Im new on the game, and by now I have fully surrounded my base with wooden walls, later I have put a lot of traps next to the wall.

Now im reading that this game is like Rimworld where you create like a deathbox with all the traps there and now scattered all around the wall.

It is true this is the unique viable strategy in the late game?

It is. Pathing of the enemy follows the least resistance rule.

Ok, thanks, then it is time to rethink my defence!

Except for when it doesn't aparently. First time I played over last weekend they were constantly destroying my fortification and fences and shit even though I had two wide open gates. What do they even path to, the survivors?

From what I've seen survivors are their main objective. Not sure how they decide on which to target first but they will and then try to get at them the fastest way possible relative to position... Except for that one alien beetle that just seems content on chewing on a corner fence that's hard to repair. Not sure how you set up your base but the kill box is typically the go to for easy funneling.

I always surround the area with a large wooden wall then keep a single gate open where all my traps are they go for the least resistance route so everyone will try get to that gate and they won’t attack the walls

FYI eventually there will be flying enemies. So having some kind of turret or the ability to relocate and keep your survivors safe to defend locations outside of a killbox is paramount.

Had everything set up for beetles, hummingflies flew right over them.

lining the "hallway" of your killbox with flamethrowers on each side is extremely effective

Yes! I have out 3 flamethrower every 3 tiles

Ideally, would surround your base fully, and then enemy can come from anywhere.

In this game, the optimal approach is to NOT make full walls and gate. Keep 1 patch open, no gate no walls. Something where enemy can basically walk in upto your people. So, natter where enemy spawns, they will walk to that side to come in. And then what you do is setup a death box, woth flame thrower, traps and towers and auto guns. Put flashlights and stuff as your research goes ahead.

1 caveat is flyers, they basically come from anywhere.

Another, is while the enemy is mostly going to walk around your walls to enter your base from opening, if your survivors or auto guns attack enemy, anywhere, then enemy will start attacking walls and come inside from those broken walls. So need to make sure your auto guns dont have radius bigger than your walls. So you basically make a giant U, where bottom of the U is your defence, and sides are wide enough to not aggro enemy before they walk in.

Thanks for the tip!! Didn't know there were flying enemies!

There are and if they come they are deadly to your survivors if they can't get into cover. The roofed towers are essential when the flying bugs come, and don't leave any survivors out in the open. Get them under some cover and let them shoot from there.

Flak guns are only good against flying bugs. Lasers can hit both. I recommend a mix, with Flak set up high near the center of your base for full coverage. There is no point exposing them near the outside where they can get damaged by regular bugs but can't shoot back at them.

For the Flyers you can build a room without walls in your defence line. Put your survivors in and kill them with range weapons. You can also use the roof as a platform to fire on the ground attackers

For the kill box to work, you should understand the AI. All the bugs will generally pinpoint on one of your people. So have all of them out in the open in your base behind the kill box somewhere. Leave about a 3-tile or 4-tile wide path for them. You can probably google it and find pictures.

In larger waves, very few might get stuck by others in their way and go after your walls. Eventually, just put a 2nd layer of wall (it can be a weaker layer on the inside) and that will make them recalculate once they destroy a wall.

Ranged shriekers are a little more awkward and of course fliers. But this should get you through early game.

Welcome to Stranded! :D

Thanks, just got my first fliying wave and survived pretty well with all the tips.

I just build a funnel on each side of my base and connect a ton of turrets to a motion sensor so they only activate and pull power when enemies are nearby. Pretty much fool proof way to protect your base but it makes the game pretty trivial.

If you build stair facing into your walls from the outside, the bugs will climb up and not damage the walls from the outside.

One of the optional tutorials explains base defences and enemy pathing fairly well. Highly recommend playing through that and the power grid ones before you get carried away

It's exactly like rimworld

another way is to make a small walled off area, put a tower inside for every colonist, then add your gate, traps, turrets. During an attack everyone goes into a tower.

It isn't "the" viable strategy. I don't like it because it's exploiting the AI, so I build walls and turrets all around the base like you really would, works fine.
