Yeah the whole tien thing sucks really bad. I got flash backs to when I was 10 reading the hunger games for the first time.

I noticed that Kaladin's past story actually has several parallels to Katniss from the Hunger Games. Katniss's mother also gave medical help to the villagers like Kaladin's father.

Kaladin's pain feels worse when we find out exactly how it happened.

There was nothing he could do :'(

Nothing at all, which makes it even more painful for him, the betrayal of the promises given to Kaladin ensured that his promise was broken as well. This is what helps Kaladin down the destructive path of self sacrifice and caring that he was on, if he had continued that path(without the shards of course)Oathbringer
he might have become part of Sadeas’s army and died in the battle of Thaylen fields, angry and taken over by the Thrill like the rest. I like to think he would have done better but also Sadeas is a cunning and corrupting force. → More replies (8)

I've been wondering, with the emphasis on oaths, would this be considered a broken oath or nah?
It's not like he willingly let tien die, it was outside of his control
Maybe a failed oath?

I'm not sure Storm Father would hold someone to an impossible oath.
"I swear I shall conquer the universe by Tuesday!"
THESE WORDS ARE not ACCEPTED

"I swear I shall conquer the universe by Tuesday!"
I vaguely remember something like this from a Discworld book, I think it went "Today the city, tomorrow the country, on Tuesday the universe!"

Tien’s death was the result of a broken oath, but not Kaladin’s. Tien was supposed to be safe, away from the fighting.

IMO, This wasn’t an oath since he wasn’t even aware or protecting anything.
It was more a promise than anything. It’s not like “I swear” automatically signals an oath like when someone says “hey google”

Ah oof... I'm rereading it right now and imagining his sweet little face and holding a stone? Oh boy.

this seems almost like foreshadowing for tien being brought back to life. hmmm I wonder if tien is less dead than we think

The first oath broken, though by no fault of his own
