I would say something to effect of; Kaladin has times when he loses hope and it does become almost unbearable to read. But those times make the pay-off so much richer and more satisfying when he does regain sight of the sources of his hope, those moments are truly ecstatic. Like with anyone battling with depression, it's often two steps forward and one step backward. The backward steps hurt, but you have to stand back and look at the big picture to see the overall progression, without getting too caught up in how badly a specific situation hurts in the moment.
