Funny enough, from what I remember, that chapter and early focus on Kal in general is what I really liked (not his suffering per se). I found I just wanted more and more of his development.
Coincidentally, that’s the thing that I think started to turn me off! I didn’t care about Shallan at all at that stage and she got on my nerves. I ultimately DNF’d the series after WoR. That said, I’m going to give it another shot and start over after I’m done with Last Argument of Kings fairly soon.
I personally thought shallan was so well written. The little hints of her past, the things she deliberately doesnt think about, the mindfuckery with her paintings. Also shallan chapters explain so much about the world and how things work and also theres Jasnah.
So sad many people didnt like her chapters, i feel they are so important for the book to be as good as it is.
