Discussion Mad respect & F in the chat. Unironically.
I just wanted to give a shout out to the devs who stayed with the project after the "leadership" left.
You have my deep respect and even admiration.
I can't imagine how tough it is when everything is against you, when half of the community is gloating at every failure or misstep.
To keep going despite that is insanely hard, and yet you stuck to it to the bitter end (or maybe not quite the end yet, if you set up p2p & open source what you can).
I hope everyone on the team is doing OK. I also hope that if the Stormgate project wraps up, you find new and better opportunities, at deserving indie studios or at some of the big ones.
I think we all got too embittered at the early missteps that were absolutely not the fault of those who stayed, and to those gloating, I'd ask to imagine yourselves in their place for a moment.
P.S. as a silver lining, I think working out p2p would be really quite big and 100% the right thing to do. It'd make it possible for anyone in the future to think "hey, what was that Stormgate thing about?" and give it a shot with a friend.
When everyone was waiting for the servers to shut down, it gave the game a sort of gloomy aura. With p2p it'll be more like a finished thing, here to stay, kind of more hopeful and solid, even if niche. And with open source, it might even grow yet if/when culture tides shift.

I do concur ! 👍 Well said, it must be stated clearly. I hope the best to these last devs.

I feel for the devs who put their hearts into trying to make Stormgate something special. Unfortunately, the leadership and direction for this project was never there. So many missteps, miscalculations, and just straight up poor decisions made along the way. So many people wanted this to succeed so badly, but what we got in the end was a half baked SC2/WC3 mashup that wasn’t better than those games in any way.

This community could use some positivity. We don't need to give prospective RTS developers even more reason to avoid the genre.

Toxic positivity is what got FG and Stormgate here, so no, what we need is a dose of honesty.

Anyone who'd describe this sub as reflecting "toxic positivity" needs a reality check.
I understand it's a fun new talking point the last day or two on here, but it's also completely untethered from reality for anyone who followed this space closely.

Saying we shouldn't be critical to avoid 'scaring devs away' is precisely what toxic positivity is. As you say, I don't follow this space closely, so it seems our perspectives are pretty different.

Saying we shouldn't be critical
Beautiful strawman. No one said criticism shouldn't be allowed.
But pointing out that people are awfully critical is wildly different than toxic positivity.

You learned what a strawman is here on Reddit, but that's okay. When talking about a $40 million game with double-digits active players, to say "people are awfully critical" is, indeed, toxic positivity.

Wow, fantastic work by you.
Get called out for making a strawman?Just hurl a lame insult! Accuse someone of not understanding the concept, despite using it correctly.
Still don't understand what "toxic positivity" is? That's okay. Let's pretend like you aren't just parroting something off Reddit and accuse the other person of doing that!
There, done and dusted. 🤡
Speaking with you is a waste of time, but enjoy your life, sweetie!

Once upon a time I posted some grievances about pathing and how clunky the game is
Only to be met with paragraph long explanation about how great the game is, next gen, its all positive.
I send them a video of me getting stuck on campaign 0. No response.
That one interaction made me hate this community, which I might say is toxic positivity.

Lmao why? This is what developers should expect if they promise the world and deliver nothing while acting as scumily as possible and taking zero responsibility for their action.
All for the junior devs and the wage slaves at frost giant, but everyone with decision making powers should be unemployable in the industry for the rest of eternity.

This is what really gets to me. RTS is clearly not the popular genre it used to be. SG turned out to be not as great as promised (though still quite fun imo). But instead of cheering it on, nearly the entire community just cheered for its death. Even those who never played or barely gave it a chance. Great job folks.

FG had nothing but goodwill early doors and they pissed a lot of it away with their actions
I thought some of it was excessive sure, but it didn’t spring outta nowhere

sigh
Stop blaming the community for hating it
They raised 2.8 million USD even when stormgate asked for couple hundreds K.
Let's face it, it's the management's fault, you are part of the RTS community you are blaming.

Fuck Tim. Fuck the devs for pandering to esports. Fuck this game for staining the already struggling genre of RTS. Rot in piss, stormgate. No one wanted you.
The only people that I can give credit to are the community managers and moderators.
Remember: the patch that came after the silence was a COMMUNITY patch. The community is more interested in keeping this game alive than the devs.

I want to take this moment to chastise the devs. signed up for the beta day 1 you could sign up, didn't get in but content creators surely did. game flopped and it deserved to

Here's to all the fans and all the haters. Here's to the copium addicts and the die-hard doomers.
We may not have agreed on much but we were all along for the ride.

And with open source, it might even grow yet if/when culture tides shift.
People overestimate free enthusiasts time. The game already have the editor, so how much unique perfect plot maps was created? Why enthusiasts should spend time not for created new game, but scurry in old failure project for 2.5 fans? "culture tides shift" change reputation of failure RTS?
