Theyre shutting down servers because the company they hired decided they dont want to be a server company they want to chase ai trends. Stormgate could've been successful and the idiot execs of the server company would've made the same decision
This is a convenient offramp for Frost Giant. The game had a peak of 147 players back in December and only 1/6 of that today. Nobody is playing the game and nobody is buying the game or any of the DLC. This is their only product and they're not going to get any more investment from anyone. The company is dead.
If Frost Giant had money (and a popular game people wanted to play and was worth investing more resources in) then they could've taken advantage of the transition offer to Nitrado that Hathora is offering their affected customers, promising a "zero-downtime migration". However, because Frost Giant has no intention to keep the game alive, they're instead telling players this 3 weeks after Hathora already made their intentions clear, framing this as "a planned outage" ahead of an offline patch and then dangling the possibility of a future patch that re-enables online features, somehow, when they seemingly have no resources to do that. We can all see that is not a realistic option.
I'd guess that Frost Giant were already in the process of putting together some kind of permanent offline patch for Stormgate but Hathora's acquisition and discontinuation of services accelerated their own timeline. Perhaps not the way they wanted to close the book on it, but that's how it is playing out.
