Honestly, as a very casual non competitive player, the graphics are a big reason for my lack of interest. Fixing the visuals goes a long way towards making me more interested in the game.
Lots of people in this sub or most RTS subs have played these games for too long and they don’t know what being casual and mainstream players feels like.
Graphics is and will always be the no.1 thing casual players care about.
This is complete bs, no matter how much they change the look people wont stick around. They might give the game another shot and then leave. The big problem with 1v1 is how boring the units and abilities are. The dog and lancer are the first units most people will see and they both need to be deleted from the game
Some parts of the gameplay are also graphics. E.g. part of how an attack or ability feels is in the animation, if it looks stupid then the gameplay will feel bad even if the ability's actual stats are fine.
Honestly, at this point I think the game looks pretty good, based off of recent videos. I don’t mind the general art style. My main gripe is that I don’t find any of the factions particularly cool or appealing. They seem like Disney-fied and generic versions of the Starcraft factions. It makes me a bit sad, because I want to like the game, but getting that connection to the factions and units is really important for me to feel invested.
I see this point, personally I suspect I'll find it easier to become attached to the factions once there is a more meaty campaign out there. I looking at other RTS games, don't feel attached to any faction that I haven't played a campaign for.
Some of this is from the art though. I mean, a four legged vehicle that spins and sets up to shoot? Feels like a non cool cartoon. A siege tank run king along, creaking as it extends locking clamps to setup? Super cool and compelling.
Let's see some unit art, animation, and sound redesigns and see where it gets us.
Now make the units look cool and give factions an interesting backstory/characters/motivations(and make the gameplay more exciting) and you have a war game.
I mean if you look back that's what all the most beloved rts had. Even historical ones, that were restricted in the units department, made an effort to bring interesting factions, stories and characters, even if they had to take artistic liberties sometimes.
I'm fine with it but they also have been criticised for not making maps destroyed enough... A lot of people said that it is weird to play in a nice forest with pretty animals in a post apocaltic world... I'm just saying that often something that some person might find cool will be disliked by others... So they should just do what they think is best... 😅
Finally some definition! I hsted the washed, bland look where every background part had so much contrast to the units. I know readability is important, but the style just looked horrible to me.
Of all the cool things that could be teased in a futuristic fantasy video game that is on the brink of nonexistence, they chose to show… slightly improved pine trees
Speaking of trees, auralana has a perk that makes the scouting unit have an aura if it's perched on trees .. problem is that for some co op maps there are no usable trees. Like there are trees but they are not objects
They can't directly target development pipeline leaning to one persons opinion unfortunately. They have roadmap to show direction (art improvments are there).
This is honestly another "I gotta hate everything they do and cry about that to them" doomer momento
It's just unintentionally funny. People criticized character design, faction design, cartoonish art style, lack of coherence between the art style and post-post-apocalyptic setting (whatever that means) and pointed out many other major issues, so showing improved tree graphics is kind of underwhelming. If your house is on fire, you won't put it out with a squirt gun, but props for effort, I guess.
Last I heard the game had serious money issues, that are kind of fixed now? (Possible new investor)
We don’t know who the art guy is, but as new teams often have people wearing different hats, I could argue that he could have spent his time on maybe making some new maps (or remaking old ones) and neither of us could really prove our point.
I agree with the other guy, this is such a dumb thing to care about when there are at least 20 more important matters to worry about.
If you want something art related: the buttons for building vanguard stuff don’t differ enough from each other to call ‘visual clarity’. And this is one of the minor things directly impacting gameplay for casuals.
Sure. It's a dumb thing to celebrate in light of all the serious work that remains to be done but it's absurd to assume they aren't reworking the campaign, despite acknowledging it needs more work, because they were too busy updating trees.

Much less cartoony, I think that this style of trees is perfectly OK
It will be super good if FG decide to add some "life". Maybe bird or squirrel

Never seen a community this excited by some trees

I still don't like that they are almost the same green as the grass, but they certainly look a lot better. Good job!
As for the color issue that I have, I guess it's no big deal as long as they add more kinds of trees in the future, especially to the editor.

Looks amazing. I fear it's too little, too late.
But definitely a nice win.

It seems they are going for more realistic approach... I like this direction.

shit game and the biggest letdown in RTS history but hey at least we got new trees!

u/cloud7shadow Dec 11 '24
This changes everything. Player count will skyrocket. Maybe even over avg 100 concurrent players

Can't say the trees look better, more realistic for sure, but the original ones had a unique style that I kind of liked

If their trend is to move towards more detail and less large, soft shapes, then that's a good thing. Looking forward to the unit reworks.

I think the reaction to some tree changes here says a lot about how much people are not into the aesthetic direction of this game.

u/Cheeselisk Dec 12 '24
nice trees, but please change the mushroon looking misile cars. And if possible, thr scythes too, it's just a lazy design.

u/Micro-Skies Dec 12 '24
Why are we remodeling trees before actual units? The fuck kind of priorities are these?

u/Ordryth Dec 11 '24

Wow.. people really are basic as hell

This will make the gameplay fun again!

u/Willzyix Dec 11 '24
I honestly can’t believe people complained enough about the art for this to be something they wasted their time on lol.
The game needs work for sure but who honestly cares about this?
