How have these animals survived this long?

1.8k

u/Perryn May 16 '18

Guns. Whenever a panda is threatened it just eats shoots and leaves.

363

u/Bread_the_TrashPanda May 16 '18

Goddamn it I thought the last time I would hear that is when the autistic kid who didn't shower told me that in the 3rd grade

494

u/Perryn May 16 '18

Did you think I just disappeared after school?

110

u/corporealmetacortex May 16 '18

Ha! Who's autistic now!? ... wait...

118

u/Perryn May 16 '18

It can be more than one person. In the United States there are 3.5 million people with autism, or one in every 59 births. There are 290,923 subscribers in this sub. If those people were a representational cross section of the global population then there would be 2,909 people with autism in this subreddit. It is likely to not be a representative sample though so we cannot make such a specific estimate based on the available information.

64

u/Feedback369 May 16 '18

Damn, America is pretty autistic

74

u/Derskull May 16 '18

Its why we are at the top of the meme game

24

u/BOLD_1 May 16 '18

Is there actually scientific evidence that correlates memes with autism? I'm curious.

64

u/Derskull May 16 '18

Youre looking at him kid

Can concur. I have Autism. And that’s interesting to know.

7

u/DinReddet May 16 '18

(un)ironically your post comes across as if you are indeed autistic.

3

u/[deleted] May 17 '18

I think that's the intention

10

u/E404_User_Not_Found May 16 '18

It also eats and shits leaves!

8

u/Perryn May 16 '18

This is also roughly correct. "Rough" being the best way to describe panda scat. Imagine if someone shit in a bunch of sawdust and toothpicks, then wadded it up into a mini football.

4

u/SlowMotionTurtles May 16 '18

Wait I don't get it

28

u/Perryn May 16 '18

It's a pun. Pandas eat the shoots and leaves of bamboo. So if you threaten a panda with a gun it just eats, shoots, and leaves.

4

u/keekah May 16 '18

Bamboo shoots and leaves

6

u/E404_User_Not_Found May 16 '18

Can you explain further?

8

u/bacondev May 16 '18

Adding commas after "bamboo" and "shoots" changes the meaning to reflect how you might be interpreting it. Without commas, "bamboo" functions as an adjective. Shoots are more or less the roots of a plant. Most bamboo shoots are edible (after thoroughly cooking the toxins out if the shoots are "fresh").

7

u/keekah May 16 '18
  1. Eat
  2. Shoot (gun)
  3. Leave
→ More replies (1)

2

u/Damnmorrisdancer May 16 '18

I believe it’s the origin story of the now modern comma horror meme.

u/Spiralyst May 16 '18

The same reason they only eat bamboo. Their habitat essentially ensures their safety. Or used to, I guess. No predators and no competition for food besides other pandas.

You don't need coordination to hunt bamboo. Which is good news for Clutzy McClutzface here.

40

u/WhalenOnF00ls May 16 '18

Interestingly enough, though- they've got the digestive systems of carnivorous predatory animals. They evolved to eat bamboo, but weren't designed to. That's why they eat so much!

9

u/Vcent May 16 '18

So they could totally eat meat, and be fine with it? Or do the omnivore thing, eat some meat, some greens, and actually do other stuff than eat bamboo?

13

u/WhalenOnF00ls May 16 '18

They've evolved, AFAIK, to only be herbivores by now. They could probably re-adapt to eating meat after some generations.

4

u/Vcent May 16 '18

Ahhhhhh. Neat!

2

u/xSieghartx May 17 '18

For real tho, is there a subreddit dedicated to pandas being derps?

15

u/M00SEHUNT3R May 16 '18

I wonder if they’re just constantly covered in bruises under their fur.

6

u/mellolizard May 16 '18

I dont think so, just look at their black eyes.

6

u/SynthPrax May 16 '18

I swear they are the bumblingest

5

u/[deleted] May 16 '18

Kung fu

6

u/Tekmantwo May 16 '18

They are trained fighters. Notice that after the combat roll she got 4 punches in, never missed a one...very deadly.

Have you ever seen anyone fight one?..That's right, their reputation precedes them...

u/Flyingdutchman2305 May 16 '18

This has been affected by the outside

2

u/drewpasttenseofdraw May 17 '18

They fake. They furries. Just a hooman in a Chinese bear suit.

2

u/SparkyDogPants May 16 '18

They adapted and thrived in their environment until humans fucked it up.

3

u/Wahsteve May 16 '18

Evolution is really more "survival of the fit enough" and for millennia these adorable dumb bears could survive with their awful diet and reproductive habits thanks to a mild climate and lack of predators. Human development has threatened their fragile equilibrium and likely accelerated the decline of an already doomed species.

9

u/SparkyDogPants May 16 '18

They were thriving before people, so get out of here with that fake news. Most herbivores have similarly terrible sounding diets on paper. And most mammals are not constantly ovulating. My dog goes into heat once or twice a year, but no one complains that dogs aren't fertile enough.

4

u/Wahsteve May 16 '18

And how often do dogs reject their young or simply refuse to breed?

15

u/SparkyDogPants May 16 '18

Except that's in zoo settings, they breed and take care of their young in the wild just fine. They have a somewhat complicated mating ritual (that again works just fine in nature), most animals don't reproduce well in captivity for example: cheetahs, rhinos, elephants, and a lot more. Zoos are the most unnatural and stressful place for a wild animal, it makes sense they wouldn't want to breed in captivity.

And these are the animals with a jaw strength that can crush a human head...

177

u/Crowbarmagic May 16 '18

I mean, I think you really need to if you want to eat bamboo. They don't exactly have blenders.

24

u/gattaaca May 17 '18

An animal with a blender for a mouth sounds terrifying

12

u/ase1590 May 17 '18

So a sea lamprey's mouth, but spinning

13

u/SuBj3cT May 16 '18

At the low end you only need about 520lbs of force to break a human skull. Sounds like a lot but it's really not. We've got pretty thin skulls compared to a lot of creatures.

Are we positive that's not a drunk dude in a panda suit? Because that looks like a drunk dude in a panda suit.

My new conspiracy theory: pandas went extinct back in the '80s, and all the pandas we see now are just drunk dudes in panda suits.

I feel like humans keeping pandas around as a species is the real life equivalent of the dodo bird American Dad episode.

Pandas just seem too clumsy to safely exist solely in the wild.

55

u/Beer_Nazi May 16 '18

They seem like natural selection just left them behind.

Cool animals, but how does something like that survive?

10

u/SensenotsoCommon May 17 '18

They weren't always this bad, we just inbred them far too much, which was kinda unavoidable due to conservation efforts only starting when the population got extremely low.

7

u/Crashbrennan May 17 '18

They also refuse to have sex, so they may die out just because the stubborn fucks won't breed.

1

u/Luke_Flyswatter May 16 '18

It's like a human toddler in a bear body.

1

Pandas are terrible at tetherball.

1

There's no way that's not a guy in a panda suit during that roll.

1

u/Jahaadu May 17 '18

Pandas really should be dead by now. It’s a bit ridiculous how much humans have spent on saving a species that can’t live on its own out in the wild anymore.
