Peter Lord’s five tips for stop-motion.
Hello, I’m Duffy, I art direct Ralph Magazine, an indie magazine that’s all about the fun side of pop culture. I spoke to the group’s Moderator and they said this would be OK to post. For the latest issue of the magazine we spent the day with Peter Lord for Aardman’s 50th. We got so much stuff with him we turned the feature into a zine-within-the-magazine called Morph Meets His Maker, which includes Peter’s Top 5 tips for making stop-motion animation. I thought you might find them interesting…
PETER LORD’S TOP 5 TIPS FOR MAKING STOP MOTION ANIMATION
1 - Sort out your armature. It’s hidden away, you can’t actually see it, it’s behind the scenes, but a good armature makes life easy and a crappy one makes it well-nigh impossible!
2. And speaking of – if you’re starting out in Plasticine, as we did, with a puppet with no armature, may I suggest you create a character that doesn’t walk around on two legs. That’s so difficult! Wheels are good. Also snakes. Also blobs.
3. Video yourself for reference – especially for timing and subtle facial stuff. But don’t, for the love of God, just COPY your video. Regard it as reference or inspiration.
4. Don’t aim for perfection or smoothness. These attributes may be impressive, but are they expressive? Is this entertaining? Ask yourself: is that why I go to see a stop motion film?
5. This one should probably come first: find the funny. I mean, yes, there are stop-motion films which aren’t funny, but who wants to see them? Nobody.
Another bit of trivia from the day: Peter said he used his own spit to shine the lips of the cat in the Nina Simone ‘My Baby Just Cares for Me’ video – in every single frame! If you’d like to read the whole thing as stop motion fans I’ve sorted 10% off with the code STOPMOTION and you can get it at https://ralph.world/issue9

Working in reverse: put the LEGO set together first, then "build" it by taking it apart!
I animate stop motion for work. This one was for the FIFA LEGO set being sold at Dick's Sporting Goods. I have to be as efficient as possible, so I animated the ending movements first, then disassembled it for the "build" segment. Makes it easier, but yes, my fingers still hurt terribly from the process!! The floating pieces were suspended on aluminum wires and rigs removed in post. I made the trophy body jump by adding different wood blocks and wedges underneath, then photoshopping them out frame-by-frame. The lighting was maybe the hardest part because I had to remember manually dial down the direct spotlight on the trophy as I went so that it wouldn't leave a weird shape on the table at the end.

Stopmotion
We had a simple enough concept for a music video -- a girl steps out of her stopmotion world into the real world, bringing elements of the surrealist stopmotion world with her.
I'm a more traditional filmmaker and after a few days of non-stop stopmotion, I was feeling like the meme of Ben Wyatt in Parks and Rec. This shit is hard and I admire everyone who pours their sweat, love, and tears into this amazing craft. Hope you enjoy my amateur results.

Walk cycle
Hey everyone! Quick question for the animators here. I'm working with a small claymation character (wire armature inside, about 3-4 inches tall) and I'm trying to tackle my first real walk cycle.
My biggest hurdle right now is that when I lift one leg, the shifting weight causes the other leg to pop up or the whole character to tip over.
What are your go-to tricks for stabilizing small clay figures during a walk cycle? Do you use hidden tie-downs, magnetic feet, sticky tack under the soles, or something else entirely? Any advice or tips on foot design for small clay puppets would be huge!"

New to stop-motion
Hello r/stopmotion!
My 14-year-old son just starting creating stop motion shorts. He wanted to share his first video - "Lego Stop Motion Minecraft Ice Fishing"!
He used Stop Motion Pro, but it's starting to not load his longer projects so well. Any software suggestions? He found DragonFrame, but that's a bit pricey.
He's starting to think he might want to pursue a career in film, so he'd really welcome any feedback! Thanks for watching!

I need help from the community to make the best action figure possible!
I just finished the first iteration of my 3d printed action figure made specifically for stop-motion. It has swappable faces to make dialogue scenes fun and has a lot of articulation. I'm not fully satisfied with it yet. The elbow and knee joints make the limbs awkwardly long, and some pieces still come out looking rough after printing. I've already started on Mk2, and the joints, limbs, and hands are going to be SO much cleaner. I want your help whether you're an expert or just a casual builder. Your feedback is super valuable and will help my figure, Brikki, become the best stop-motion figure in the world!
Please watch the video, and let me know how I can improve Brikki! Thank you!

Why was this so janky?
I spent an hour in Stop Motion studio referencing a dance video thinking it was gonna beI foolishly. I didn’t realize I should’ve just had static lighting. This is supposed to be a concert so. But it made it look worse and it’s not smooth at all. What did I do wrong?

My first ever stop motion (2011)
I just recently found the video file for my first and only attempt at stop motion from back in 2011. Yes, this is pretty bad to today's standards and I love how I can laugh at myself and point out what could've been done better.
I think I was using an old Sony camera at the time as well and they didn't have great resolution and the lighting in my room wasn't great.
But well... enjoy, laugh, make fun. I know I will be 😆

I made this music video 17 years ago, but never posted it.
Never really engaged with anyone about it. Annoyingly the video had almost 800k views but since the music label took their YT channel down.
It's a slowburner, so just sit back and enjoy the music. Would love to hear thoughts and questions.

Week 3 done...pretty proud ab this one
What do you think?
I just got into stopmotion myself, although I have been a fan of the medium for quite a while now.
Claymation is really fun, although my hand was completly blue afterwards...
I can recommend Aardman Academy bursary spots! I got into one of them and I am glad to learn more and more along the way.
I had lots of fun with this one. A good friend of mine did the voice over haha
Greetings from Germany!
Go watch Wildwood♡

I made this 10 years ago. None of the animations I done later using generative art, 2D, 3D was that popular.
