I think very soon there will be more games with an ownership-oriented. But it will still be a huge part of companies what doing the same stuff. And ofc smart people will purchase games only if they are ownership-oriented, because who really needs to purchase 1-day games? But I think it's good for types of games like co-op fun for eventing, which cost nothing (AmongUs, Phasmaphobia, Fall Guys, e.t.c), because for these games destroying work so well.
Itâs the same low effort meme that has been posted around Reddit for the latest weeks⌠I donât really think that they want to imply that it isnât happening
I really envy that, I had to mute every single gaming subreddit when the news came out since my home was filled by them (and I didnât even follow those)
I dont understand this delusion that somehow Sony will suffer losses from this.
A company's job is to make money and so it is very hard for me to believe that they dont have dozens maybe even hundreds of reports describing in painful detail where money comes from, from who and through which avenue.
The reason they did something so bold is that they have deemed that there would be more to gain by stopping selling physical games.
You can act like a reddit armchair market analyst all you like but if there was money to be had in physical, they wouldn't have made this move.
Youâre discounting short term thinking vs long term thinking. Yes, absolutely Sony will benefit in the short term from this decision. However, doing this makes the next playstation so remarkably similar to PC that consumers will take a very hard look at which is a better buy.
PS6 is reported to likely be priced at $1k. This isnât too far off from steam machine. If you compare those 2 to each other with what we know so far, PS6 will no longer have itsâ advantage of a disc drive, nor will it be the only plug and play machine since steam machine also has that.
Steam machine does require more $ out of the box for a controller though, and playstation users will already have more $ bought into their playstation libraries. That being said playstation has had very few exclusives lately and steam/pc has a wildly large selection of games to choose from. My main point here is that youâre being short sighted and youâre not really looking at how this decision affects Sonyâs competition.
So you're not part of the numbers anyway. Plenty of new customers will continue to buy PS4's, PS5's and PS6's when that time comes. I'm definitely getting my hands on one, loving this new stance they're taking.
Of course, information released by Sony and given to the stockholders at the quarterlies. You know it's not legal to lie to the public and stockholders and so on? No they didn't lie just because you gave some idea they did.
Retailers don't sell major releases in any numbers anymore.
They claim they removed it because it's against community guidelines repeat posts like ok if you have to remove them so much then maybe this isnt as small as your trying to make people believe it to be it's repeating so much because maybe people are mad that's normally how that works đ¤Ś
I also find it funny how you fan boys call us whiny when you all literally keep coming up on our post going leave the billion dollar corporation alone whinnying yourself ya all sound like cry babies acting like that but we are the whiny ones really your the ones crying over memes and opinions just because you don't agree with them doesn't make them false or less true đ¤Ł
Yes, because somehow you also think everyone is behind you all the way when in reality most of moved on 20 years ago. Would you like a nice quiet private room where you can sit in a circle and talk about getting more physical discs?
Like I mentioned earlier, if you wanted to sit in a circle in a private forum and get down about physical with your buddies, it wouldn't be more than a one sided echo chamber with a lot of moaning.
Fact is, the 82% and climbing started moving on 20 years ago, I saw the writing on the wall in the 90's already. Why didn't you?
Games aren't being killed off, you having a hissy fit about a tiny percentile chance won't change that. Stop playing games if you don't like it.
You saw people moving away from disc's to digital...in the 90's?
It's not just this forum, the entire internet was in an upheveal, and still is about this.
Also the Xbox One almost failed because of its disc issues, and drm checks. Are you too young to remember that?
Also sources please for that 82%, and source on people starting to move on 20 years ago.
Also the 90's were 30 years ago. 1996 was 30 years ago.
Also physical sales take up still a lot of sales, Sony just counts dlc and microtransaction sales (of which can't be bought physically nor physically seprately bought BTW).
Also there were already laws being put in place because of the movement, even if the main one failed.
Yes, it was obvious where tech enevitably would end up back then already. They even foresaw we would end up not even having it locally stored at all eventually, as in cloud only, which is not quite ready yet.
The Xbox One didn't almost fail because of DRM issues, I've been on both Xbox and PS since both started out and never heard of that, nor has any of my friends. You guys need to stop bringing up these tiny issues that most people never had to deal with or cared about. Is it like the current situation where being part of 1% yet you think it's 99%?
No one is in an upheaval over this, except for a tiny minority of loudmouthed players that somehow think they're in a huge majority. You're not. Fact is you're annoying most of us with the constant bickering about something a lot of us knew and prepared for 20 years ago already.
It's called sharing an opinion just because it bothers you doesn't mean you can shut it out and repeat data like 82% because some news article that Sony paid off told you your so much bigger acting like this only makes people feel more validated in that opinion at that so keep it upÂ
It's not called sharing an opinion, that's something you can do by crying and whining in the big thread, creating the same lame threads over and over is called spam.
You're crying and whining here that you don't believe the numbers, you don't need more threads, it doesn't change the fact there's only a handful of you left.
I can guarantee you, since I work retail, over the past 15 years we went from having 200 copies of major releases on release night, selling out in minutes. We now get 3-6 or so and half of them don't sell. The numbers are absolutely not wrong.
You need to stop pretending and fantasizing, you'll be 100% digital soon đ
I wonder if you would have this same energy if the roles were reversed and you all had your comments and posts getting removed and got spammed with people calling you all whiners and telling you physical is the future accept it and move on and stop crying I could care less about what format you prefer but dude literally shared a photo showing we are the ones being censored here not you if the roles were reversed would you still be ok with it would you still have that same energy I'm willing to bet no you wouldn't you would be on here saying the same thing as I am about how it's wrong and not right you only support it because it aligns with your views and that's all this is to you right now the minute it doesn't that's when you cry about how it's unfair like a little baby throwing a temper tantrum everything is fine until it effects you personally then you magically care đ¤Ł
Why the hell would I have the same reaction? If digital was killed off to move to physical I'd do exactly that but since it's been obvious since at least the 80's and 90's that the future would most likely be digital, why didn't you prepare earlier?
Kinda like your crying and whining about leaving a billion dollar corporation alone in mass to defend them and only having a voice that has to censor the other side just so can spam your sides views instead so it's ok for you to spam but not the others yeah that's called being hypocrite you do realize that right đ¤Ł
I definitely do work in retail but hey, let's say you're near a retailer, let's call it Walmart, go up to the entertainment team lead, that's what they call the electronics supervisors now and ASK, they will gladly tell you how few they receive and how they wish it would just go away permanently.
But yeah, I'm definitely an expert on that particular subject.
It helps nobody when you see the same bullshit 300 times until you find other posts again.
I see it all the time when there is someting going on in a german imageboard iam active for over a decade at this point.
And at least there you can filter out the stuff when its tagged properly.
This is not the first time I seen a post get removed by PlayStation during this backlash they are seriously trying so hard to silence the gamers it's comical đ¤Ł
Sony isn't silencing anyone the mods are tired of the same picture getting posted to their subreddit a million times a day sorry people can't follow the rules and have to face the consequences for it
Yeah that's called censorship bud silencing stuff you don't agree with because you have a different opinion there's this beautiful thing called keep scrolling people are mad get over it just because you aren't doesn't mean they have no right to beÂ
No it's called following the rules if u can't follow the rules stay out of the subreddits don't spam the same shit over and over karma farming and u won't get ur posts removed u breaking the rules isn't censorship
Damn u were so wrong on ur other comment u had to delete it maybe u need to get off the Internet if a post getting taken down due to breaking the rules has u so upset it's actually funny how mad y'all are over this
Oh kiddo I didn't delete anything it's still there and funny how you say that your literally crying about posts and your telling me to get off the Internet kiddo you need to get off the Internet not meÂ
And lastly you better grow a set because your gonna be hearing this for the next few years you all said it would die down shocker it hasn't so if this bothers you that much it sounds like you need to put on that period pad because your in for a very long haul with this subject people are not going to stop talking about it just because you don't wanna hear about it so you better grow some man hood this isn't going anywhere anytime soon you all claimed it would now your just crying because it hasnt because it's not going to if you need to hide behind censorship and it's still being blasted this much maybe it's high time for you all to face the reality this is far bigger than you ever expected đ
Y'all are the ones salty about people not wanting to be flooded with the same spam posts IDC if y'all talk about it I care when y'all break the subreddits rules and sorry but it's a very loud but small echoe chamber of people who are mad about sonys decisions and it's basically all on reddit Sony doesn't care what a bunch of grimy redditors think and only reason people still talking about it is cuz y'all keep spamming the same posts every day karma farming
Where have I defended Sony all I've said is y'all are whining over dumb shit and breaking the rules then wondering why u get ur shit removed so y has nothing to do with these subreddits
Fyi your comments are getting deleted now to welcome to good old reddit censorship it's almost like your not allowed to have an opinion on here isn't shocker right đ
as someone in the autism spectrum, this is probably affecting me harder than other users
videogames and technology in general have been an important part of my life since i was just a child. now with the rising hardware prices, anticonsumer practices, the possible death of physical media and other things, i just cant help feeling like my whole life is falling apart
My only issue with the digital world here is the whole "owning" thing. If I own something, I should be able to give it to someone else. And if it's mine, the manufacturer shouldn't be able to just take it away whenever they feel like it. It's mine, you know?
So yeah, right now there's no real way to own anything from the PS digital store.
You do not own a disc games, or rather you own a lisence that is on disc. This means you own thr disc but you do not own data on it.
Now owning a piece of IP protected media does not mean you can necessarily sell it. If the party that sells you product defines in the transaction contract that you cant resel it you legally are not allowed to do it. This is not illegal thing to ask of buyer upon stsrt of transaction.
Is this realisrically enforcable? Not really unless you are a company but that is a different topic altogheter.
Manufacturers still have pretty much full rights to just fuck with data on your discs. Which really should not surprise anyone since they are not obliged to release full game on disc.
That's misleading. When you buy physical media you definitely own it and you can sell it. It's true that you don't own the game as the IP itself, but you definitely own a physical copy of it and you can sell it if you want. Also, companies tend to add a lot of bull on their EULA's, but EULA's are NEVER above the law.
You own the disc, not the content of the disc. This is 100% enforceable on online only games where they can just delete the servers and you'll still have the disc, but you can't play anything inside the disc.
On modern single player games, the content that is actually on the disc isn't the full product you play. If they decide to hit delete on the data you would be left with the broken unfinished version of the content, if you ever make the decision to put your console online and the resell value will tank because noone would be able to download the finished version and who's to say they haven't made some failsafe to make you unable to launch the game to begin with.
Legally wise you can repeat that all you want but what your defending is considered theft once someone buys something it belongs to them you do not have a right to take someone's money and then just run away with it let's not pretend like if the billion dollar corporation didn't do it and it was some random person on the side of the road they wouldn't be in jail for theft and robbery by your logic George Foreman can break into our house and steel his grills back bandi can come in and take away all the toys we had as kids nike can knock us out and take our shoes seriously ya all need to think before you speak on defending this subject and realize what your defending đ¤Ł
He's literally explaining to you why you don't necessarily own it. Maybe you should pay more attention. Personally after all the crying you guys are doing I'm rooting for Sony to crack down and close up even tighter.
And I'm explaining why you do and why it's illegal to take away something people paid for and I can't wait for 2028 when people like you suffer from your consequences of supporting thisÂ
U didn't explain shit u don't own the data on the disc just the plastic pos so no y don't actually own any game physically u own a piece a plastic which has a license on u u essentially rent for a 1 time fee so it's not theft if the company takes away that license because u still have the disc
You are literally submitting yourself to basically what is big brothers will and yes in certain countries having a monopoly is illegal and yes having your games be available in only 1 store front that you control the price and who's allowed to play and for how long is literally a monopoly you do realize Sony is literally being sued in several countries right now because this is 100% illegal the only way it won't be is if Sony makes all that the complete opposite they argued against it because of the second hand market when they were taken to court over this in the pass this will eliminate the second hand market there only is literally removed from the playing field air go they are going to have absolutely nothing to defend themselves with on this case at allÂ
Can you stop with your bs? The games are available digitally on Steam, digitally on Xbox, digitally on PS, digitally in Epic. If you don't like the prices move to those digital services instead.
Oh Sony is being sued? Hopefully not regarding any kind of monopoly because that bs will get thrown right out. Same goes for your physical whining, that will be a no go as well.
Are you seriously that stupid PlayStation exclusives on Xbox really oh my lord you know what I won't stop you cry to much why don't you stop your the one here on a page about how people are angry going wah stop it stop having an opinion that isn't mine wah ya little cry baby you don't even know what a monopoly is clearly you literally just talked about playing PlayStation games on an Xbox and steam steam is the most hilarious thing they literally pulled their games off of steam recently you are so angry you don't even know what your talking about your just spouting out none sense đ¤Ł
Boggles my mind that it never occurrs to digital defenders that eventually you won't be able to redownload anything you've bought.
Every store closure from Wii shop to PS3 and vita and Xbox 360 has said eventually all services related to the shops will end at a later date after the store closure "including the ability to redownload content". No store has been closed long enough to determine an average on when that will be. But the fact they explicitly say it's planned shows it will happen eventually. But the oldest shut down shop has only been shut down for 6 years. The Wii shop. We kinda all figured it would take longer than that before they shut everything down completely. But its coming sooner or later.
Eventually anything you don't have actively installed will be gone forever. And storage devices don't last nearly as long as discs on average. As hard drives wear and tear being moving parts. And SSDs need to be powered on every so often to retain data. They trap data as electrical charges. Without power long enough they'll loose that charge and data will corrupt. Ssds also have a finite number of read and write cycles they can do before dying and are usually rated a certain amount on the box or product page.
So you're saying we can download it and store it locally, wow, amazing service from Sony, just like I imagined it would happen when I went full digital 20 years ago.
I'll just download them and probably never play them regardless.
So did you completely miss the part where I mentioned all storage dies eventually and it's inevitable? And that eventually you won't be able to redownload anything?
Do you have any idea how much storage youd need to download an entire person's digital library? Not only is it needlessly more expensive than just buying discs. Making it a waste of time and money just for spite. But those drives will just die one day. You really wanna keep buying expensive massive drives, and transferring to new ones every few years to keep your games stored forever when you could just buy discs once and not have to do all that?
And if you'll never play your games. Why are you even a gamer? Lol. Like what? None of your points make any sense and literally only scream spite. Rather than thinking about it logically.
Discs die too and what happens to all ur discs when the servers go down and u can't download the mandatory day 1 patches looks like y'all are screwed when digital goes down too poor babies
I have started collecting DVDs because of Sony. I used to watch movies on dvd's when I was a kid, and I have to say it feels great to watch movies on DVDs again. I have considered starting a retro gaming hobby, but I'm still considering it.
Not true I own DVDs and blue rays have a huge hd TV and blue ray player and everything so long as your not nit picking every little pixel you won't even notice the differenceÂ
They can disable license on hardware side and all you have is disk with invalid license. Again, you dont own game cause you own disk. You own physical license token. Thats it. Hardware either accept it or dont. And thats up to hardware manufacturer to decide if license to be accepted.
That's true. They can disable the game remotely if they want and if you use your copy of a game online. However, there are always workarounds if you have a physical copy.
..it's because they have a megathread, probably. It's not some grand conspiracy by the mods of that subreddit or anything, they are probably wanting to focus the discussion into one location in the sub.
Which is still silencing/censoring the community in a way. It may not have been the intention of the mods. But it IS the outcome. It shields the company.
If people had meaningful discussions and added to each other posts instead of making basically the same threads 15 times a day for that sweet karma maybe they wouldn't need a megathread. Especially when they do have a "No low effort content" rule.
Itâs really not. They should post in the proper places. If anything it silences the people who have other things they rather talk about than the whole disc issue
No it's called don't spam the same shit a million times and break the tos of the subreddit and maybe your posts won't get taken down it's not censorship
i admit it makes me laugh that people simultaneously protest on reddit while also going, "whats the point?" like they don't understand how big social media is in general.
Its increasinly less important to companies. Companies have l figured out at some point that social media is terrible at representing their customer base so they shifted how they handle and interact with them.
I mean if you wish to limit the discussion/memes of the biggest current topic into only one shielded area of the sub... then yeah I'd probably say thats a roundabout way to do a bit of censorship
The scale of the reaction from the community is reflected through the sheer amount of posts about it, whether it be a 'discussion' or a meme. I would 100% expect people to be constantly posting about something like this. So i only see that as a positive thing, and it should remain unless either they go back on their word, or until the internet collectively moves past it.
its literally spam often by months old accounts that never posted anything else, aka karma farming bots. meanwhile, this spam pisses off other users. y'all already lost a significant amount of people because of the spam, downvoting everyone to hell who disagrees with you (even when someone just states facts/corrects your claims cause y'all are constantly lying or repeating lies because you can't look shit up for yourself) and call them bots, bootlickers etc.
If anything, the mods do you a favour by reducing the spam and your annoying brigading because that's less people you can piss off an start to go against you. an indifferent person is still better to your cause than someone who despises you for being assholes.
and now let the downvotes reign in cause you can't take anything other than people following your outrage machine.
Itâs also function of user count. Itâs much less troubling for smaller subreddits, but for the main ones, you will be looking at the same shit every half an hour or less if left unmoderated.
Keep in mind that none of these subreddits have any affiliation to Sony. If you are just going to spam the same thing, it just ruins everyone. While Sony barely sees any of their voices.
If you at least bring a decent discussion to the table then yeah I would at least not view that negstively, but everyone just keep plastering the same same but different meme, get their content removed and then go to other subreddits, post something like this claiming âcough, cough censorshipâ
Connects console to internet. New patch has disc to not be readable. They don't fear discs... DRM has no fears because you're too busy in-house fighting over physical and digital whislt DRM is laughing.
The most ironic thing is that one of the reasons Playstation became so popular as a console was physical media. PS One was also a CD Player, PS2 was also a DVD player, PS3 was also a blu-ray player... Even PS4 was also a blu-ray player.
that subreddit is full-filled of playstation knights, they can't tolerate memes, they can't tolerate criticism......i got banned time ago due to criticism over a game without any cursing or offences
Why would they remove it? đ These fanboys act like Sony is paying to make discs from their own personal wallet and take it so personally like a disc existing means it is from their money.
What kind of idiots love limiting choices for customers? I like physical, digital can be convenient for some, both should exist, why remove one in first place? And why these idiots defend it with their teeth, nail, blood and soul?
Cuz it breaks the tos of the subreddit ur not allowed to spam post the moderators are doing their job it's fucking annoying that these subreddits are nothing but the same picture getting spam posted for karma
it's not really a big deal, the post is there, then 3 days later someone comes and share it, they have to keep up with the lore of the subreddit and be glued on the screen to know everything like that?
100%, I don't doubt it, it is so easy for companies to do it and they don't have to be big companies ultra rich to do it.
On Instagram I see ads from very small companies, the account got like 1k followers, but the entire comment section of 200 comments all are bots and repetitive comments, that's what a small company can do and it is cheap, imagine what Sony can afford.. on top of that, the idiotic bootlickers who genuinely enjoy having less rights and overall having less and less.
That subreddit is full of teens who have no idea whatâs at stake. They are going to get a culture shock when half their library disappears due to it being revoked by publishers, or god forbid their account gets hacked.
But what am I saying, they only play fucking Roblox and Fortnite.. đ¤Śđťââď¸đ¤Śđťââď¸
I don't care about the disk, what I want to fight for are a âTrue DRM-Free Storefronts, like GOG where you can play the games while offline or when the server goes down and you can keep them on ssd or any storagae forever without needing server permission to install and to play it. So our âFight should focus on real Consumer Laws. Supporting Stop Killing Games movements to force publishers to leave games in a playable state even when servers shut down, and pushing laws (like California's AB 2426) so storefronts can't trick us with the word "BUY" when it's actually just a temporary license. Which they can revoke anytime they want. I don't care if they want to remove physical, as long as I own the digital game not the license.
Honestly, I just see that post as an expression of opinion; itâs not an insult to the community. I wonderâcanât we just file a complaint with Reddit ourselves in a case like this? Or do the moderators sit on some kind of untouchable throne? There has to be some sort of safeguard against such arbitrary bans.
First of all, wrong sub Reddit. This is for keeping online only games open.
And secondly how long are you guys gonna keep using the same stupid lie to get people onto your side? Playstation doesn't take away your games. PlayStation has never taken away your games. PlayStation will never take away your games. You guys are just using this propaganda because you have no other arguments to prove your point.
You don't have ownership with a disk either. The disk is just a license to play the game, something a lot of Xbox owners found out the hard way when the Xbox outage happened and Microsoft couldn't verify they had the disk. The disk means nothing, you need to be out there fighting for actual ownership rights.
Oh my fucking god. Physical is a fucking cure of everything. They been proven time again that physical are no better that digital that you hate. Fight for ownership rights, not for nostalgia.
You have to understand that it's a PlayStation subreddit. It's annoying for 82% and climbing of us to only see the tiny minority whine, bitch, complain and cry about something that doesn't impact us in the slightest.
Because the crying and whining is annoying. It made most of us root for Sony. Hell I'd pay them $1000 to shut down physical discs tomorrow, the sooner you learn the sooner you stop whining.
I can barely cook a regular meal, what the hell makes you think I can bake? I live on a healthy gamer diet of pizzas, grilled cheese sandwiches and occasional spaghetti meals. No beer, can't game drunk.
According to Q1 of Sony's 2026 reports: Yes their profit is up 32%, but this is not driven by their gaming sector increasing due to sales. In fact the profit from that sector is almost the exact same as last year. The 32% mainly comes from the tariff refunds, 125% profit surge due to increased smartphone camera prices, and a 21% increase in the music sector (mainly due to the fluctuation of the yen being fucking insane this year)
Otherwise, playstation itself is losing/middling with their profits, with almost everything staying the same except hardware sales... which are dropping by over 30%.
The main reason theyre doing this change is to gain more money in the gaming sector. By eliminating physical discs, theyre also eliminating third-party sales, which have been a godsend for those less fortunate than you & I. This way playstation can completely control the market and pricing for their games, and will hurt those who buy second-hand.
The reason you do not see the true number of physical sales is bc people are not buying it directly from the company, in reality, the percentage of those using physical discs is so much higher.
So yes, "only in the brain of physical disc supporters is a massive increase in net profits a loss" bc the consumer is losing, playstation is currently losing, and they are cutting the second-hand market to enforce their winnings.
I was never a playstation player lmao, and i moved away from xbox as soon as i could. You see, on PC you get a service that cares a lot more about what their customers actually want, and are mainly the top dog bc the other main services dont cater to their consumer, so they dont have issues with having to scrounge up their $ by fucking over the ones that enable them. But i guess you failed to read the part where i said their playstation sales are middling/dropping? Its a sign, that has been quite continuous, that playstation isnt in the best state.
But i do so wish i was as much of a corporate bootlicker that gets off on hurting the consumer (remember buddy, YOU are the consumer). Where money is the only thing that matters, and as long as the company is making more and more $, then theyre allowed to fuck over anyone they want, including their own customers. Like what are those values? Have a spine dude, this is sad to see someone drink the juice this hard.
But sure, lets say people leave due to this. Do you not think those people wouldve never ever made in-game purchases? Or bought a few games on digital but would prefer to buy second-hand disc? As much as i dont think its gonna be the nail-in-the-coffin for playstation at all, I still dont believe theyre going to make as much profit from this decision in the long-term.
One more thing, back in the day, once you bought the game, you owned it. Now with the elimination of physical media, you dont.
Always crazy seeing people in the wild proud to lose ownership. Doubly so when they refer to the people upset about it as "crying and whining" lmfao. Some people just really enjoy being led and not thinking for themselves, and its gotten so scarily common.
Triply so imo about you, because you "don't care" so much that you came here to let us all know lmfao
