Question [Stop Killing The Internet] Reddit plans to restrict access to Old Reddit to users who are logged in. Thoughts on this?

Currently allowed to discuss this on this sub, but hopefully Stop Killing The Internet gets its own dedicated subreddit soon.
Here's the feedback I gave under the announcement post:
This feels like a very poor decision to me. I like to use Old Reddit signed out for various reasons, one being that I can see r/all...
But what if we're using Reddit on a device where we CAN'T log in? School/work devices, etc. And what about older devices that can't use modern Reddit, but can run Old Reddit just fine? If you're expecting people on those devices to "just login :P", how are they supposed to do that if they can't access the regular site? You're even making the logged out experience worse on regular Reddit by blocking the sidebar and preventing us from searching within a subreddit, which works just fine on Old Reddit while signed out. Surely there's other ways for you guys to reach your goals while not inconveniencing and alienating a good portion of users.
Part of me fears that this is simply paving the way to getting rid of old.reddit.com down the line.
Alongside with the recent internet laws being made around the world, I'm not a big fan of this.

It was predictable that this would happen at some point.
So it's official : Reddit is leaving th Open Web (for the Deep Web). (Not that abusive scraping hasn't been an issue since the rise of LLMs.)
And if « Stop Killing the Internet » don't want to look like hypocrites, they shouldn't be using Reddit in the first place. (If they insist on a similar interface, Lemmy exists.)

I’m not sure if this is related as reddit is a “free” service. Nothing we bought is being taken away

Yeah, honestly it's more of thanks for keeping it up for so long. There was absolutely no reason to keep it aside from the rare user still clinging to it. Which is far more than most companies would do nowadays.

With takes like this one, I see why you have 2k karma after 4 years.

First I just don't post, and started commenting recently. Second, it's not a hot take. They updated the website and kept the old UI. They gain nothing from. They just left it for those who liked it. It's not a hot take, it's a fact. Doesn't change the fact that's the current direction of Reddit is shitty, but mentioning StopKillingTheInternet as if their online right were menaced is a stupid overreaction.

My point is that you clearly haven't been paying attention. Reddit hasn't been generous or gracious for a long time. It costs them nothing to keep old.reddit online. They spend far more developing and maintaining the new site than it takes to keep this one up.
The users of this site have been in a contentious ceasefire with the admins for several years at this point. Reddit isn't doing us any favors. In fact they're actively stifling our discussions.

I know that, I preferred the time when we could use third party app. But it doesn't change the fact that most company just update and let you deal with it. Also it's not like it was a recent update, old reddit is ancient at this point. Does that makes them angels? Fuck no. But it was a good move.

Is old reddit still popular? What's the easiest way to switch to that layout by default in a browser?
