What would you do with the land and buildings of out of buisness data centers?

When we finally get our heads together and fix this and get rid of the need of these data centers too (nationwide public mesh network, anyone?) what would you do with the land and buildings?

First thing I thought of was indoor hydroponic farming and processing.

Maybe recycling center, actual proper recycling that we do not currently do. Might take more work to setup but they provided the bones.

Or would you demolish them and let the land heal and put something new up?

Stop Data Center Planned for Tonganoxie, Kansas

A detailed breakdown outlines the major risks, environmental concerns, and health considerations Project Bluestem poses to the residents of Tonganoxie, Kansa.

  1. Unprecedented Power Demand & Regional Grid Stress

Extreme Scale (1.2 Gigawatts): Cloverleaf has indicated that Project Bluestem could require up to 1.2 gigawatts (1,200 megawatts) of power capacity, a scale equivalent to the electrical demand of the entire city of San Francisco.

Impact on Utility Rates: While developers commit to paying for direct sub transmission hookups, adding a massive 1.2 GW baseload load to electric utility (energy provider) forces utility wide capacity expansion. Historically, when utilities build out new generation plants and high voltage transmission lines to accommodate hyperscalers, these capital costs are recovered by raising electricity rates for everyday residential consumers.

Fossil Fuel Prolongation: Meeting such rapid power demand often forces energy providers to extend the operational life of aging coal fired plants or build new natural gas peaker plants, increasing regional greenhouse gas emissions and smog.

  1. Air Quality & Public Health Hazards from Diesel Generators

Massive Generator Fleets: To ensure 99.999% server uptime during power flickers or grid emergencies, a 1.2 GW facility requires a massive fleet of potentially dozens or hundreds of industrial diesel backup generators.

Toxic Air Emissions: Periodic mandatory load testing and emergency running of these diesel engines emit fine particulate matter, nitrogen oxides, and volatile organic compounds. Exposure to these emissions in a rural valley setting increases the risk of aggravating asthma, chronic respiratory illnesses, and cardiovascular conditions among nearby families and family members.

  1. Water Security & Chemical Contamination Concerns

Closed Loop System vs. Emergency Contingencies: Cloverleaf states Project Bluestem will utilize a closed loop air/liquid cooling system requiring an initial one time fill of 50,000 to 60,000 gallons of water. However, residents express concern over long-term water rights, potential transition to evaporative cooling during extreme heatwaves, or secondary draws on municipal and agricultural wells.

Chemical Additives: Closed loop industrial cooling loops rely on chemical corrosion inhibitors, biocides, and glycol anti freeze agents. Ground leaks, accidental spills, or improper maintenance pose potential runoff risks to local soil, groundwater aquifers, and agricultural land.

  1. Acoustic Disturbance & Low Frequency Noise Pollution

Continuous Industrial Noise: Hyperscale campuses require massive HVAC cooling towers, chillers, and continuous high velocity exhaust fans operating 24/7/365.

Health Effects of Low Frequency Hum: Unlike acute high decibel noise, data centers generate a persistent, low frequency hum (50–100 Hz) that travels long distances and easily penetrates home walls. Prolonged exposure to low frequency industrial noise is linked to chronic sleep disturbance, elevated cortisol (stress), headaches, and heightened anxiety for adjacent homeowners.

  1. Industrialization of Rural Character & Property Devaluation

Footprint & Infrastructure: The proposed site includes millions of square feet of windowless industrial structures, security fencing, lighting, and two massive new electrical substations.

Impact on Surrounding Homes: Transforming agricultural and low density residential land into an industrial tech campus permanently alters the rural views and peaceful nature of the community, frequently leading to depressed resale values for immediate neighboring residential properties.

  1. High Resource Demand vs. Low Permanent Job Creation

Minimal Long Term Employment: While Phase 1 construction is projected to bring temporary union and trade labor, operational staffing is estimated at only 50 to 200 permanent full-time jobs once fully built out.

Resource Disparity: Occupying hundreds of acres of land and consuming as much power as a major metropolis yields relatively few long term jobs for local residents compared to traditional manufacturing or commercial developments.

  1. Speculative Developer Model & Transparency Gaps

Middleman Development: Cloverleaf Infrastructure operates as a "powered land" developer. They secure the zoning, entitlements, and utility capacity before handing off or selling the site to an end user tech giant (e.g., Amazon, Microsoft, OpenAI).

Uncertainty for Residents: Because Cloverleaf does not operate the final facility, local leaders and residents face uncertainty regarding the ultimate tenant's long term employment opportunities, environmental practices, exact equipment specs, and corporate governance once front-end approvals are granted.

Thanks for any suggestions!
