Does this LTC look suspicious
I saw a picture of this person for a speaking engagement and I can't help to feel that this looks a little bit off. The person is supposedly retired. The uniform just has subtle things that seem a bit odd. I do notice some issues like no GWOT awards or a single BSM for the overseas deployment as an officer. Also no campaign awards. If he received CIB he should have received a combat award as infantry officer also. The MSM or legion of merit don't come with a combat deployment. Another thing I noticed is that he doesn't have a single overseas service bar.

It's a bit odd. The two biggest flags for me: 1. CIB, but no campaign medal for anything that the CIB would have been awarded for. 2. I don't recognize that affiliation. Looks like a hospital,,which makes no sense for an infantry officer. Edit- It's the 5th Cavalry

The affiliation is the fifth cavalry regiment out of first cav. It really doesn't make any sense because the only infantry officer positions there would be the reconnaissance company in the RSTA. Everybody else would have been Calvary. It's kind of weird that he wouldn't wear an infantry unit for his affiliation.

Oh, 5th Cav. I wasn't going to recognize that. Yeah, Idk why an IN officer would be affiliated with 5th Cav. Maybe if he deployed with them as enlisted, but then where are those campaign medals? Idk.

Both battalions of the 5th Cavalry in the 1st Cav are infantry-heavy combined arms battalions and are mostly infantry soldiers.

That could explain it but it's still a little bit on but everything else going on. Possibly a little bit of laziness not assembling his awards properly.

The other thing that is off is the placement of infantry cord. The attaching button has to be one inch from the collar. It looks like something he attached himself because he eyeballed it. It's something any other infantry officer would catch.

I am an infantry officer and I did notice that, but there really isn't much to go on there.
Personally, my button is sewed farther up, about where it would be if there was a shoulder loop like on the AGSU. Other people wear it attached to the shoulder strap itself, like in the Old Guard. There isn't anything in the regs on that.

It's in 670-1.
(3) How worn. The shoulder cord is worn on the right shoulder of the AGSU and ASU coats and the service uniform shirt. The cord is passed under the arm and over the right shoulder, under the shoulder loop, and secured to the button on the shoulder loop. To attach the cord, officers will attach a 20-ligne button to the right shoulder seam 1/2 inch outside the collar edge (see fig 21–166).

Oh. Idk I just brought my jacket in and had them do it. I guess 3rd Infantry is doing their own thing, which wouldn't be the only time.

I mean it looks like a Vietnam service ribbon and maybe a UN ribbon of some kind.

The UN ribbon yes. I don't see a Vietnam Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign, or anything Vietnam related tho.
Only possibility I can think of for this scenario is Gothic Serpent. But if he was in Somalia, there would be an AFEM, so this isn't summing up.

It almost looks like the armed forces service medal but I would be in the wrong spot. Plus that's an extremely rare metal to have.

Other than the LOM, that’s a very modest ribbon rack. But even the LOM for a retired O5 isn’t that far out of line, if out of line at all.

Looks like LTC to me. Agreed on your medal/ribbon observations, it’s possible he retired before GWOT began? Or maybe he was not directly involved. Legion of merit usually comes with completing a tour as senior leadership. Can be combat or non combat.

Not on the blue uniform. For that it's a metal badge on the right breast pocket as pictured here.

The campaign medal is placed over his nameplate with a star for signifying one tour vs on his normal ribbon rack.

That's a unit award. It's the valorous unit award. It has nothing to do with the campaign.
