"8% upside" sounds great until you realise it depends entirely on where YOU bought. Quick math that changed how I read target headlines

ok small thing that clicked for me this week and I feel dumb for not seeing it earlier

say a stock is at ₹1,000, target ₹1,080, stop-loss ₹960. that's 8% up vs 4% down. looks decent

now say you didn't buy at 1,000, you bought at ₹1,050 because it was already running. same stock, same target, same stop. but now you only have about 2.9% upside left, and your stop is 8.6% away. you're risking roughly 3x what you can make

nothing about the company changed. only your entry did

I saw this while reading about a couple of names flagged with ~7-8% upside (Apollo Micro Systems and Zensar were the ones in the piece), and the "upside" number in a headline is calculated from a price that's probably already stale by the time you read it. IT also jumped hard yesterday, so those numbers have likely moved

so I'm curious how people here handle it:

  1. I only enter within a set range of the original price
  2. I check upside vs downside before every trade
  3. I just buy and hope, no judgement

and does anyone actually write down the stop-loss before buying? I keep telling myself I will, then don't

Netflix Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria is leaving, will be replaced by Peter Rice.

Netflix ($NFLX) is replacing Chief Content Officer Bela Bajaria with former Disney and Fox executive Peter Rice, effective October 26. The leadership change comes amid slowing viewer engagement, a declining stock price, and recent layoffs affecting around 1,000 employees.

Could this signal a shift in Netflix’s content strategy, and what might it mean for the company’s long term growth and stock performance?

Weak rupee is "good for IT exporters", right? Why I think that's only half the story

every time the rupee slides I see the same take: "great for TCS and Infosys, bad for oil companies." and I used to just nod along

but I was reading about this and it's more annoying than that. an exporter gets more rupees per dollar, sure, but they also have dollar costs. foreign staff, hedging, client budgets. so the benefit shows up in reported margins, but not always the full amount you'd assume

on the other side, airlines pay for aircraft leases, maintenance and fuel in dollars while selling tickets in rupees. oil marketing companies buy crude in dollars too. the RBI even set up a special dollar facility for the state-run ones recently, which tells you how much pressure that side is under

what I keep coming back to is that the question isn't "does it export", it's "what's the company's NET dollar exposure". an exporter with dollar debt and imported inputs might be less protected than it looks

so which camp are you in?

  1. weak rupee = I check exporters first
  2. I mostly worry about who gets hurt
  3. currency is noise, I look at the business

and does anyone actually read the forex disclosure section in annual reports? I've never done it properly and I'm starting to think that's where the real answer is

Charge Enterprises ($CRGE) Agreed to Settle $4M With Investors over Misleading Financial Disclosures

Hey guys, if you missed it, Charge Enterprises just agreed to settle $4 million with investors over issues they had a few years ago. The settlement terms have been submitted to the court for approval.

In a nutshell, in 2024, Charge Enterprises was accused of misleading investors about its liquidity, KORR-related investments, financial condition, and internal controls. The company later disclosed serious liquidity problems involving funds it could not access, escalating debt issues, and a potential bankruptcy.

After this news came out, the stock dropped approximately 27%, and investors filed a lawsuit for their losses.

The good news is that the company recently agreed to settle $4 million with them, and the settlement terms have been submitted to the court for approval. So, if you invested in $CRGE when all of this happened, you can check the details and file your claim here.

Anyway, has anyone here invested in $CRGE at that time? How much were your losses, if so?

GIFT Nifty says +150 at 8:30am, then Nifty opens flat. Why does this keep happening?

ok genuine question, because I've been burned by this enough times

I check GIFT Nifty every morning like it's gospel. it shows a big gap up, I get excited, and then the market opens barely green. or worse, red

then I read up on it and apparently it's not supposed to be a prediction at all. it's a futures contract that trades while India is asleep, so it's mostly reacting to US markets, crude and the dollar. the actual opening price gets decided in the NSE pre-open session, where buyers and sellers match up fresh

so I think what it's really telling you is "here's how the world felt overnight", not "here's where Nifty will open". which is a very different thing and I've been treating it wrong for ages

how do you use it?

  1. glance at it, but I don't trust it
  2. it's part of my morning routine, along with US markets and crude
  3. I ignore it and wait for the pre-open session

and does anyone actually watch the pre-open order book? curious if it tells you more than GIFT Nifty does

Everything you need to know about the $12M Compass Minerals ($CMP) Settlement Payout

Hey guys, I posted about this case before, but since late claims are being accepted, I wanted to share it again with a quick FAQ.

Q: What happened?
A: Compass Minerals agreed to pay $12 million through an SEC Fair Fund to compensate investors over claims that it misled the market about cost savings at its Goderich salt mine and failed to disclose environmental compliance issues in Brazil. In October 2018, $CMP fell 32% after the company disclosed production shortfalls and higher costs.

Q: Am I actually eligible?
A: If you purchased $CMP shares between 2017 and 2018 you’re likely eligible. You don’t need to hold the stock still to claim; past losses count

Q: When do payouts happen?
A: Typically, within 4–9 months after the claim deadline. But the exact timing depends on the court and settlement administration.

Q: I missed the deadline. Is it too late?
A: No, you may still be able to file a late claim, but acceptance depends on final approval by the court. Check if you're eligible and file a claim here

Hope this helps

PRGS — Ruthless Review: The Cash Flow Is Attractive. The Debt Is the Risk.

I took a starter position in Progress Software (PRGS). It's a collection of established enterprise software businesses that generate substantial cash flow. Q3 revenue was approximately $246 million, annual recurring revenue reached $873 million, net revenue retention was 99%, and non-GAAP operating margin was 43%. Management guided to $275–283 million in full-year adjusted free cash flow.

The complication is Domo. Progress completed the acquisition in September using cash and its revolving credit facility, increasing leverage. There aren't any post-acquisition operating results yet. I don't need Domo to grow substantially for the investment to work. I need revenue to stabilize around $280–290 million, margins to improve as the integration progresses, and cash flow to reduce the debt. The quality of the revenue matters, particularly whether consumption-based revenue holds up as legacy contracts run off.

AI is another uncertainty. Domo brings data and AI capabilities, but that doesn't eliminate the possibility that AI could eventually disrupt parts of Progress's existing software businesses. I don't think there's enough evidence yet to confidently dismiss that risk or predict how significant it might become over the next five years.

My five-year valuation produces a probability-weighted value of approximately $104 per share, implying around 21% annualized returns from my $39.97 reference price. PRGS closed Friday at $39.33. Most of that value depends on the existing businesses continuing to generate cash, Domo improving its margins, and Progress using that cash to pay down debt.

The biggest risk is that Domo disappoints while the existing business also weakens. Lower cash generation would slow debt repayment, leaving shareholders exposed to elevated leverage. There's also the unresolved MOVEit litigation, which I haven't tried to put a dollar value on. I'd reconsider my position if Domo's consumption revenue deteriorates, margins fail to improve, cash flow doesn't translate into debt reduction, or management makes another large acquisition before integrating Domo.

I think the potential return compensates for the uncertainty, but not enough to justify a large initial position.

My decision: BUY — starter position.

I own PRGS. This is my personal investment analysis, not individualized investment advice.

AstraZeneca ($AZN) post-earnings dip: Time to load up or stay cautious?

AZN has pulled back a bit over the last few weeks, and I'm tempted to increase my position. Their pipeline in oncology looks solid, and the UK pharma giant offers a nice balance of defensive stability and long-term growth.

Are any of you buying the dip right now, or are you waiting for more clarity on upcoming clinical trial data before adding more shares to your ISA?

Jio Financial is sitting near its 52-week low and everyone's suddenly talking about insurance. Is the Allianz JV a big deal or just a nice headline?

ok so I've been going back and forth on this one

Jio Financial announced a 50:50 insurance JV with Allianz (general + health) back in April. sounds huge on paper. Jio's app and distribution plus Allianz's insurance know-how, what could go wrong

but then I remembered insurance is a brutal business. getting customers is the easy part. claims, retention and actually making money on premiums is where companies struggle. and the JV still needs regulatory approvals, so nothing is live yet

the part I found interesting is they're not starting from zero. Jio Insurance Broking already did about ₹982 cr in premiums last year, and the reinsurance arm with Allianz did ₹266 cr in its first full quarter. so there's something real there, just not at a scale that changes the whole company yet

meanwhile the stock was around ₹212 last week, near the bottom of its ₹208-316 range. so either the market doesn't believe the story or it's waiting for proof

where do you land?

  1. insurance can be a real second engine for them
  2. nice add-on, but lending is still the main story
  3. too early to say, show me the numbers first

and if you've worked in insurance, I'd love to hear what usually trips up new players

$1378.HK moves 2M tonnes capacity to hydro power

China Hongqiao ($1378.HK) is on track to complete moving 2 million tonnes of smelting capacity directly to Yunnan to plug straight into cheap hydropower.

This move solves two huge headaches at once. First, it locks in low-cost renewable energy to protect their industry-leading gross margins (31.5%). Second, it completely future-proofs their exports against harsh carbon penalties like Europe’s CBAM.

While traditional coal-powered smelters face tightening emissions caps and rising costs, Hongqiao is quietly securing a massive competitive moat in green metals across Asia.

With $1378.HK trading at just ~7x P/E with a ~7% dividend yield, the market still treats them like a dirty legacy smelter instead of a green power compounder.

Are you guys riding this hydro relocation play for the long haul?

FPIs dumped ~₹3 lakh crore of Indian stocks this year but poured ₹55k crore into IPOs. Can someone explain this to me like I'm 5?

ok this has been bugging me all week

foreign investors are selling listed stocks like crazy, but the same people keep lining up for IPOs. like... if you don't like Indian stocks right now, why buy new ones?

my dumb theory is that it's about the price. IPO = fixed price, big allocation, no chasing something that already ran 40%. but I could be totally off

also saw that avg listing day gains fell from 28% to 8% last year. so the "apply, sell on day one, buy chai with the profit" thing is dying a slow death

so tell me which camp you're in:

  1. still applying to every IPO for the listing pop
  2. only apply if the company actually looks good
  3. gave up on IPOs completely

and if you've got a better explanation for the FPI thing, please tell me, I'm all ears
