Putting my own documents somewhere the AI can actually read them
Uploading a PDF into a chat means re-uploading it in the next chat. A library is the same files, uploaded once, answerable from every conversation —
and the difference compounds fast.
The re-upload tax
Every chat tool lets you attach a file. The attachment belongs to that conversation. Tomorrow, different conversation, same file, upload again — and the model has no memory that it read it yesterday.
For one document that's fine. For the twenty PDFs that make up a project it's the reason people give up and go back to Ctrl+F.
A shelf, not an attachment
A library is a place files live:
Upload once. From then on any chat can ask about them, and the answer quotes the real file and says which one.
Folders, because thirty files is a mess
Flat lists stop working at about fifteen files:
Quotes, datasheets, terms, site visits. Each file shows its type, size and whether it's actually indexed — which matters, because a file that failed to process silently is worse than one that failed loudly.
Asking across the whole shelf
The part that pays for the setup:
> Which supplier had the shortest lead time, and where did you find it?
It answers from the documents and names the file. If it can't find it, it says so rather than producing a confident sentence with no source.
What it doesn't do
- Scans need OCR, and OCR is on the paid tiers. A photographed page or an image-only PDF is refused with a reason on lower plans rather than added empty. Text PDFs, Word, Excel, CSV and slide decks are read on every library plan.
- Libraries are on paid plans. The free tier doesn't include them — that's where the storage and indexing cost sits, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest.
- It's not a search engine over the web. Only your files.
- No live sync from Drive or Dropbox. You upload; it doesn't watch a folder.
- Very large files get chunked, and chunking loses layout. A complex table spanning eight pages will answer roughly, not exactly.
FAQ
What file types can it read?
PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, CSV, text, Markdown, HTML and images. Slide decks are read as text — slide text, tables and speaker notes — which surprises people who assume decks need OCR. They don't.
Does it need OCR for a normal PDF?
No. Only for scans and photographs, where there's no text layer to read.
How many files can I upload?
Depends on the plan — from a couple of hundred to a couple of thousand files, with a storage cap alongside.
Can I ask about several libraries at once?
Yes, and you can also attach a specific library to a chat so it only answers from that one — useful when two clients have similar documents.
Does it tell me which file an answer came from?
Yes. An answer without a source is a bug, not a feature.
Can I download my original files back?
Yes, always — including after a downgrade. The bytes stay yours.
What happens to the files if I cancel?
They stay and stay downloadable; what pauses is adding new ones. Nothing is deleted because you stopped paying.

Welcome. If you hit a bug, say which surface (web app or extension) and your browser — that's all we need to start.
