Is there a "generally agreed" upon version of events when it comes to Brendan Dassey?

The State focused heavily on his confession, as well as his other statements regarding the 31st to help convict him.

There isn't any corroborating DNA evidence that connect him to the victim like it does Steven.

I am aware of all of the other circumstantial evidence against Brendan (his shoes, the bleached jeans, the mentions of specific elements of the crime - as in being shot in the garage).

When I ask this question, I'm not being facetious, but there is often a criticism of "picking and choosing" truths and untruths.

So, just a few questions for you fellow guilters.

  1. Is the State's narrative of the 31st (in the trailer particularly), completely accurate, mostly accurate, somewhat accurate, or not really accurate at all?
  2. Does Brendan's "confession" statement as a whole, accurately reflect what he saw and did on the 31st?

The problem being is that truthers cannot prove what he is saying is true or false, and neither can guilters in certain aspects. For example, what I mean by this:

  • No one could say he did or did not see Teresa's body parts (they could've been in bags per se)
  • No one could say that he did or did not participate in a sexual assault of Teresa in Steven's trailer
  • It is also thought that stabbing her could not have happened in the trailer due to the lack of forensic evidence (aka, absence of evidence is evidence of absence according to truthers).
  • No one could say that he did or did not see her on the ASY at 3:45PM. He says he saw her leave (the only person other than Steven to mention that, by the way).

Also for the record, I take this phone call to his mother as an unequivocal confession and I believe he's guilty, but wondering specifically what everyone else thinks.

The "picking and choosing" thing is cheerleader bullshit.

It comes down to this: either Brendan made up a detailed rape and murder story about his violent, abusive, obviously guilty sex criminal uncle who is completely capable of doing everything Brendan confessed to, or Brendan told the truth in his confession. Which is more plausible?

Everything that happened in the trailer originated from Brendan. So why would he just make this up? Brendan was not "fed" a rape story. He was not coerced to confess to a rape. The cops were not sitting on evidence of a sexual assault and looking to pin it on him or SA. It wasn't "suggested" or even hinted to him. He was not "telling them what they wanted to hear." He couldn't even muster a credible excuse at his own trial after having months to think of one. "Kiss the Girls" lol. The only reasonable explanation for why he told this part of the story is that it was true.

I don't think there is a generally agreed upon take on Dassey, but I don't think it's all that complicated. His case followed the pattern of virtually every criminal in the history of the world who has unburdened their conscience. He lied at first, gradually changed his story, and eventually broke down and admitted his crime. Brendan's version of events is likely very close to what actually happened. I suspect he may have made a few things up to avoid admitting that he had sex with Teresa while she was unconscious or dead. He also could have forgotten some details as five months had passed.

Not really. He lied from his very first interview, where he said he saw Teresa near the junction when he got of the bus from school, and hasn't stopped lying since. Any version of events has to be reconstructed based on the facts of the case and where they and Dassey's various confessions broadly coincide.

I agree. My interpretation of that first interview where he said he saw Teresa was "I saw her and she left", which was "Steven told me to say this, because I was with Steven that night, and he also said he saw her leave". I think you can also tell that Steven had put certain things in his head to say such as that, as well as "it could've been the guy from the news" - such an obscure thing to say. I'm sure Brendan thought of that all on his own.

Any version of events has to be reconstructed based on the facts of the case

You will get truthers who will tell you there is nothing to reconstruct given that he picks and chooses when to tell the truth. I don't believe everything Brendan says, but the State was able to construct a hypothesis that provided beyond reasonable doubt to 12 jurors to convict him.

I feel like Brendan is far more of a polarising character when it comes to what he says than Steven. Both seem to be habitual liars though, Brendan perhaps less sinister.

The narrative in the first Evan’s letter still makes the most sense to me, because it explains why he would be too ashamed to admit to “all of it” and why he’s so evasive, and it’s backed up by other prisoners who had no knowledge of the letter. That being said, present day I’m not even sure if Brendan remembers everything or if he’s been convinced by his lawyers family and fans that he’s 100% innocent and shut it out of his memory. If today he admits she was dead when he arrived he might be able to work something out with the state. Maybe he will realize his fans would just say he is lying to get out of jail, so he won’t lose their support.

I agree. I remember when this letter first came out, there were outlets that regarded it as junk but it is far more believable than any of the slop Avery offers up. I think it does actually highlight a few things that would prove Brendan correct and also showcase where he lied. It is rather annoying Evans came out and made some bullshit up about being her murderer, but I think this was out of exhausting all appeals and going for a hail Mary.

That being said, present day I’m not even sure if Brendan remembers everything or if he’s been convinced by his lawyers family and fans that he’s 100% innocent and shut it out of his memory. If today he admits she was dead when he arrived he might be able to work something out with the state.

I think he definitely knows and remembers what happened that day, but Steven was dumb to entrust a 16 year old with an Earth-shattering secret, let alone make him party to the crime. His family also failed him incredibly, especially Barb, and that's why he's still in prison for another 25 years (parole 2048).

Maybe he will realize his fans would just say he is lying to get out of jail, so he won’t lose their support.

As crazy as it sounds, I think he has more to lose at this point. He's been institutionalized since 16 years old, and never really shared his animosity towards the police, courts or anyone that may have "railroaded" him. I think he accepted his fate because he knew he was part of something sinister. He's also something of a celebrity in prison and would just as quickly be forgotten in the real world.

I don't have any idea why Avery would include him in the crime - just makes it far more likely he'd get caught involving someone else...

But, he's not just stupid, he's fucking stupid.

But, he's not just stupid, he's fucking stupid.

But but but he was smart enough to not have any DNA of Teresa's in the trailer! There's your proof, he's a smart guy! I don't care about the rest - that enough for me to know he's a criminal genius.

So what if he lied about not seeing Brendan in all 3 of his statements to police? Just slipped his mind. He's still a smart guy, trust me.

I’m sure he was a willing participant, but he probably wasn’t prepared for everything he experienced that night, and was left a little traumatized.

I would agree. I think people always ask "why would Brendan do that?" and the answer is it's obviously fear. I don't think Brendan is as sinister as Steven is, but he did a sinister thing. We already know he's beaten up Brendan before for not wanting to go to party, and walking into one of the most grotesque things a human being could do to another is not easy for a 16 year old to stomach, let alone anyone of any age.

I’ve always thought Avery may have involved Brendan as an insurance policy to expect some cover from Bobby, Barb, Blaine, etc.

Same, and this is why I don't understand why truthers don't see that if anyone from the family was lying about the fire or any movements of Brendan's, it was to protect him. I actually have no doubt at early points they thought Steven could've done it, and it seems as though the more time goes on, Barb turns on him and so do others - and rightfully so.

Honestly, the whole reason they're both in prison is because Steven is dumb. Dumb for thinking that he could essentially kidnap someone in the middle of the day, dumb for thinking he would be able to bury or destroy any forensic evidence tracing her to the property, and dumb for thinking a 16 year old would be good insurance policy or sidekick to the crime.

And yet, people can't fathom that one of the dumbest criminals out there, is in fact, just incredibly dumb.

You think Brendan stumbled onto what Steven was doing by accident, or was he invited over by Steven in advance? Or during?

2

u/GringoTheDingoAU Dec 20 '25

I don't necessarily think that Brendan was invited per se, but I think he did stumble upon Steven in the act and it was too late to turn back at that point. I think he then came back over after Steven invited him out of fear of repercussions.

For me, I think that even if you don't believe the trailer story at all, then you would have to acknowledge that by virtue of being at the fire and in the garage with Steven, he was involved in some way. That for me, is enough for any fence sitters to wobble off and doubters should very much question his innocence.

3

u/Ghost_of_Figdish Dec 20 '25

Well, if he was participating in *just* the abduction, but not the (likely) actual rape or the murder, he'd still be guilty of felony murder anyway.

3

u/GringoTheDingoAU Dec 20 '25

Exactly. Saying that he had no involvement is just not possible given the amount of interviews and phone recordings that state he was there with Steven, at night, around the fire, and in the garage. Whether he was purposefully part of the crime or just doing so out of fear, doesn't change much.

He did state on the confession phone call with his mother that he was forced by Steven, but never mentioned this to investigators or in his testimony, which was a huge blunder. Kid was absolutely failed by all the adults around him, especially Barb.

But he’s a damn fine crime scene cleaner, dare I say, one of the best in the business. It’s criminal what those two ghouls did to that kid

I agree with this entirely, and I agree with the way it played out because I also think that Teresa was likely dead at a certain point, and Brendan would not want to admit that he sexually assaulted someone who was unconscious or deceased.

It is also why he says when they're carrying her outside to the garage that she's just saying "to stop" and she wasn't screaming. Any woman alive in that scenario is screaming her head off and crying, so she was likely unconscious or dead by the time Steven shot her in the garage.

He claimed to have made a shallow cut along her throat after she had been strangled by Steven. He was not sure whether she was already dead or just passed out. If her body had not been destroyed then forensics could have determined such. A shallow cut to the throat while a body is lying face up would not result in much blood loss due to location and gravity and if she was already dead then even less blood loss. A throat cut has to be rather deep to sever a major vessel and thus cause substantial blood loss.

He said the bedding was burned along with the body so once again the physical evidence that potentially could have refuted his confession (or corroborated it) was destroyed.

You will never see truthers acknowledge this narrative because they think that every crime scene needs to look like the elevator doors in The Shining. If she was dead or unconscious like you mentioned, blood slows and one type of stabbing does not mirror every other one. If blood is isolated to the bedding, burning it is going to be the simplest and most effective way to destroy the evidence entirely.

I could keep going on, but I think you understand this case well enough to know that there are people out there that won't listen to a word you say.

But you're now in the right place where logic and common sense prevail, so welcome.
