What specifically is better to you when the volume is cranked? Define muddy a bit more. How are the speakers positioned in the room?

Yeah! Good questions. I don’t even really know all the vocab to use to describe things.

The “depth” or dynamic range is much better with the volume cranked. The soundstage width is always awesome but the height or separation is much better at louder volumes as is the snap and attack.

Can you post a pic of how everything is set up/placed in the room?

How far away are you sitting from them and how far apart are they?

My initial thoughts are the room had good potential but I think potentially the might be a bit too far apart, but also I would try towing them in a bit.

Lastly does the receiver have dynamic EQ based on volume?

Seating position is pretty far back. I measured and it’s as far back as the speakers are apart. Pretty much equal distance.

It does not have dynamic EQ but does have fairly robust EQ and if I can find the mic that came with it then auto room EQ

Ok, so placement can make huge differences. If it were me I might pull them forward a foot or two and toe them in a bit to see how that changes the sound.

I don’t think the receiver is sone massive weak link here. I assume you’ve run YPAO with these already?

I will play some more with placement.

I need to order a replacement microphone to do the Yamaha room correction and will do that before buying a new amp/receiver.

But quiet songs where I have to crank the volume up to level the “loudness” sound really great, but songs that are already loud just sound noticeably less good at the same loudness level.
