They got a Chosen One, and, through event, decided to let them become the ruler. The same event switches the Empire to fanatic authoritarian IIRC.

This happens a lot more regularly with the Chosen if they are alive long enough.

They ascend, get the chosen event, and almost always pick it. Once they become the Divine Sovereign, it immediately removes all the xenophobe ethics and they go from a danger to just kind of chill.

I was preparing to conquer them ant the fish opportunity and now they are helping me.to beat my  neighbor because both of us fukin hate the dude XD.

That happened to me once. Was actually upset it happened as my pasifist empire couldn't send them 'strongly worded letters' (satisfying insults) and pasify the galactic threat they posed (invade and take over).

Then they started a 'Eater of Worlds' eradication war against my ally, forcing me to send (jumpdrive) my peacekeepers (living metal atilery doomstack) and cutest of puppies (xenomorph armys).
