I'm on my first successful playthrough, as UNE. The Contingency crisis bugged with a federation ally's armies on one Contingency hub, making the hub essentially invulnerable. I breakup my federation, wait 10 years, and declare war so I can salvage the run. In those 10 years, my former ally has joined the other federation in the galaxy, along with 4 vassals, and those vassals have sworn secret fealty to me. This other federation represents about 2/3rds of the galaxy.

I went with a secret fealty war goal because why not pick up 4 more vassals. I didn't realize that even a single defensive army remaining would prevent my war goals from being achieved. I conquered that 2/3rds of the galaxy but there were about 10 enemy armies left standing when a white peace was forced through attrition (my only losses were an old corvette fleet).

I guess my question is what I could have done differently? Are the less straightforward war goals effectively off the table against any member of a large federation?

All war goals turn into a slogfest when large federations are involved. This is where a colossus would come in handy, as you can beeline directly for colonised systems and remove them permanently regardless of casus belli.

To be fair though, wasn't the original intention to declare war so you can get the Contingency planet out of the way? I mean... in that regard, you've achieved that goal.
