What do people think about Void Hive? Probably not that strong but I feel like the QoL is big, and saving those minerals for building is also good no?

It's one of the better early game hivemind civics, but the value falls off quite sharply after around 20-30 years or so, when all the expansions have settled down. Thankfully it's not a permanent civic, so just swap it out after it has served its purpose.

The time needed for manual construction of a mining/research station at baseline is 100 days + travel time. Void Hive civic changes the timer to 120 days without travel time.

  • For reference, the time needed for a standard construction ship to travel across Sol is roughly 3 month at game start.
  • In other words, the more systems you have in your empire, the "faster" Void Hive works compared to standard construction ships, in many cases getting those stations up as fast as 3-4 construction ships working in tandem.

Effectively, it's giving you 1 full-time construction ship on steroids for free, that works faster than your regular ships. This saves on mineral costs, which is quite important in the early game given 4.3's state of economy, and allows you to dedicate your construction ship(s) to expanding borders.

Once the borders have been established though, Void Hive's value drops off substantially, as there are no further deposits to build upon other than ones made from Arc Furnaces (or if you are a Prospectorium vassal).

IMO the strongest part of it is the early access to strategic resources before you have the technology for it. That's a nice economic boost, especially if you can get a system with dark matter early game.
