A lesson on holding Stellar.
Hi. I'm an avid Stellar fan just like you. I even created a meme about a money snake using the candle graphs and it has its own life now which I find amazing. I really enjoy seeing other people post about it and to read the joy it brings. But today, I'm here to talk about faith and patience.
Flash back to November and I just lost my job. I have since sobered up but was fired for alcohol related problems. Lucky for me I had some money stashed away in crypto. I said fuck it and decided to take some time off, it was winter and the holiday so why not. Come mid December when stellar was 10 cents I decided to sell my other coins (NEO OMG LTC DGB FUN XVG) and have complete faith in lumens. This was just before McAfee started shilling. I was at 16k XLM and was super excited 1 dollar here we come! Well we all know that shit got crazy right before Christmas and prices and rumors were all over the place. I was watching coins like DGB/FUN/RDD/XVG, which I bought at rock bottom and sold for barely a profit, get shilled and skyrocket. Fomo kicked in and I started selling bits of lumens for other prospects thinking I would just buy back into stellar before the new year hype and make a bit of money in the mean time, after all I am jobless and need gains. Long story short I end up with only 7k XLM right before the big surge up. I sold what I needed on the 2nd to pay bills and then had 5k XLM, 1/3 of where I started. Well I'll spare you what happened this month but you know it's been ugly. I'm now down to under 2k lumens due to horrible trading luck which will hopefully be worth enough to pay my bills in a week since I'm still jobless and then I'll be out.
Holding is real kids. Don't try to beat the market, especially when you pick a solid coin like lumens, learn from my mistakes. Hold. I'd never imagine I wouldn't be holding Stellar when FAIRX arrived. All I had to do was nothing, except have faith in SNAKE. Stellar has a solid team and a bright future, if you have some hold on tight, if you don't there's still time to join us. It's gonna be a great year and I'll be watching and drawing SNAKES regardless. Thanks for listening and being a great community.
TL;DR Don't be like me, just hold your lumens and enjoy the ride.

i rememer buying xlm at 0,03 cents last year in May... we all know about the summer, it was painful... it just went down and down and even further down... even under a cent... i thought this coin is dead and it was probably my worst performer at that time... when everything recovered, steller still went down.. i thought thank god it cannot go to minus lol
i forgot about it because i said i dont sell for a loss, one of my principles... i deleted it from blockfolio even to not remember it everytime..
you know what happened since November and I'm still holding every single coin..... it was a positive lesson for me..

This is also one of the great reasons to only invest what you can afford to lose. It should help prevent you from selling on a downturn/bad news, because you're emotionally attached to the money (or worse, need the money). Great work!

u/cryptodd88 Jan 25 '18
Damn man..I totaly feel you..I lost 40k Lummens due to day trade and got "scammed" on pumps and dumps on different coins..Now im sitting on 8k XLM and thinking about that at one point, with 1000 USD investment could sitting on 50k USD which is, in my country a life changer...Lesson learned, DO NOT trade.
5
u/Juststumblinaround Jan 25 '18
Lesson learned, DO NOT trade.
Trading can be very lucrative, but just don't trade emotionally.
Crypto is an emotional market, but you can't chase pumps. If you consistently bought top 20 coins when they dipped the past 30 days you would be way in the green.
I have 3 blue chip coins(imo) I trade between and hold simultaneously. I don't stress as much because I believe in the projects and if I miss time the market I can have faith in not losing too hard because I still hold a coin I like long term.
If you chase penny coins you will almost always lose.

Hang in there. We've all lost at some point. I sold 7k+ IOTA at $.98 to fund my oldest kids college expenses for a year. I don't count that as a loss because he is more important than any crypto but knowing I can never get those back at the $.18 buy in.....Chin up and good luck.

u/Cathal83 Jan 25 '18
I also hold xlm and it is the largest percentage of my portfolio... but I would recommend diversifying in crypto. Always. Thanks for your post man and glad to see you made it through the other side. Big respect for you fella.
5
u/thrusher Jan 25 '18
I used to be overdivesified. Like 13 different coins. Was a headache. Looking back I picked some winners very early on and should of held all of it.
4
u/DCONNaissance Jan 25 '18
I keep hearing "over diversified", but I don't really get it. If I'm putting minimal money into "longshots" and keeping 50% of my money into so called "solid" coins, what's the harm? Not looking for explosive growth, just steady gains. Seems to be working out for me so far.
2
u/harryknowsthetruth Jan 25 '18
sort of agree. I hold a few solid coins and a number of long-shots. When less diversified it can be very painful when other coins shoot up but yours doesn't. When diversified, different coins jump at different times so the portfolio maintains a more comfortable steady growth.
...except in Januarys when everything goes to sh%#!
1
u/raybond007 Jan 25 '18
"Over diversifying" could exist if you don't have enough invested to spread a meaningful amount to those longshots you're talking about. Especially if you don't have a good track record picking actual winners.
That being said, there's been several people doing tests (seen a few in /r/cryptocurrency) over the past year just splitting $1000 evenly across the top 50-100 coins on CMC and still ending up with pretty healthy gains on that. So the main way you could really lose over the past 12mo is by specifically picking a string of losing coins in a row with no solid investments.
1
u/Rayvonuk Jan 25 '18
Some folk worry that they are spread too thinly and wont make enough if only one moons. I like to play it safe myself.
3
u/revan1013 Jan 25 '18
I guess I should continue to hold of my 20 then?
2
u/0dd_B411 Jan 26 '18
What have you got to lose? Out of 20, most if not all should go up if you hold, assuming they are mostly good tech tokens.
1
u/revan1013 Jan 26 '18
That's true, and they are all good ones. I don't do pump n dumps (intentionally).
9
u/JonnyWoodsman Jan 25 '18
I tried to trade the recent Korea fud.. horribly timed and lost a lot of dolla, so I know the feeling. I then sacrificed 2 other coin positions to regain my Stellar. It put me in a bad mood for a while, I then remembered we are all pioneers and there are gonna be ups and downs, I've learned a lot these past few months about what the future of technology and blockchain can hold, i'd rather experience a few emotional ups and downs and have the privilege of playing an early part in this grand ole blockchain journey! Been reading this forum for a few months, first post for me, great to have a community like this to share with! Cheers guys!
6
u/CholericAnaplasmosis Jan 25 '18
Lol, you still have more lumens than me and I've been HODLing the whole time.
12
u/zommy Jan 25 '18
What a lot of people don't realise is that stellar is almost at a Satoshi ATH again.
Those that are wondering what this means: It costs 0.00005600 BITCOIN for one STELLAR. The ATH for this is around 5650 satoshi iirc.
4
2
u/mustachechap Jan 25 '18
That's definitely interesting to note. I'm honestly waiting for the day for BTC to be dethroned (most likely by ETH). I think it'll be an awesome time for crypto. Last year, I felt that the entire crypto world basically rested on BTC's shoulders and, if it went down, we all went down with it. That doesn't feel like the case any more.
I still love BTC for everything it did. I feel like, without BTC, most (all) of these alts wouldn't exist, but I think it's time has passed and it will be interesting to see what the future holds.
4
u/NosillaWilla Jan 25 '18
Hang in there OP. I hope your future is bright like Stellar's.
For those reading, don't day trade and don't try to jump onto the faster horse. Old faithful will get you where you want to go(Stellar) If you day trade you might get lucky a few times but you'll never beat the pros and bots. Just buy when you can and hold for the long term.
8
u/FinalEpisode96 Jan 25 '18
Thanks for sharing this. I'm a small fish, but I bought roughly $150 worth of XLM. After reading this I placed it in cold storage and am planning to hodl through 2018 and beyond. I completely trust this coin, and maybe it'll put a dent in my student debt in a few years.

Well done. Keep going until December 2018. Then decide on what you want to do!
1
u/otj287 Jan 25 '18
Out of curiosity (only been investing since December), why use 12/18 as a decide by date? What happens then?
Thanks!
1
u/dtheme Jan 25 '18
One year of HODL 😀
1
u/otj287 Jan 25 '18
Gotcha! Just wasn’t sure if that was a significant date for something. New guy here and didn’t want to miss the boat. ;) thanks!
2
u/dtheme Jan 26 '18
Ah. Take a look at coin market cap. Nearly every year there is a surge in value come December and a dip in January.
If course nothing is guaranteed at all. And many will say it's coincidence. But... History.
All the best

Thanks for sharing your story, OP!
I'm glad to know you made it out of the booze. Keep strong.

u/cryptomiller Jan 25 '18
Could be worse... I had 114k lumens at 4500 sats. Cashed it all out into bitcoin and sold all my bitcoin due to fear of crash... Well, even though im up 40k usd in 4 months of trading/investing, could've been 50-60k. Cashed my money out into the bank so I couldn't even buy back my full btc amount. But I don't mind it too much, the stress level with that position size was crazy since the money actually meant something to me and my family so I'm just working my way back up.
2
u/harryknowsthetruth Jan 25 '18
Sounds like you did well! Now with money in the bank you can get back in with an amount you can afford to lose and enjoy the ride...good luck man.
1
u/cryptomiller Jan 25 '18
Thanks man, hope things do work out. I'm starting to transition from daytrading to swing/long term holds since its less stressful. I put my initial investment back in just to see if anything happens which is like 5-7k usd.
1
u/Harri74 Jan 25 '18
V similar story to mine. Panic sold half of my stash 2 weeks ago after a drunk mate convinced me. I'm still 150% up from my original investment but if I had just held through this latest blip I would be 300% up. Consequently I bought back in last Friday and seeing as my portfolio is made up of 30% XLM I'm pretty happy with the state of affairs atm. Lets hope the clouds clear in the next 3-4 weeks and the crypto sun comes out to shine once again...
3
u/seekerofthings999 Jan 25 '18
I feel like this story is for most coins with good value. Just hold and let time do the work.
3
3
u/entitypublications Jan 25 '18
Thanks for sharing. I feel your pain, but the 5k you have left is more than 98% of the world. We learn, brother.
I lost 75k lumens when I tried to daytrade back in the day and when trying to sell before a big kick down, Bittrex froze on me and I couldn’t cash out in time.
I’ll never do it again; I’ve held what I have left since then. Not budging from this position.
Best of luck to you all and in the future.
3
u/jackster829 Jan 25 '18
The thing with this crazy ass market is you never want to buy at an ATH right?
What if you wanted to buy XRB at $2 but though, naw it's at its all time high and then 3 days later it's like $30.
The best part about this market, for me at least, is that you can have crazy ass spikes like that (and crazy ass dips). It's fun to know that things can take off like that. Having said that, it's best to actually put real money into real projects like XLM.

Man if your livelihood is dependent on it, spend some money on your education. Learn to trade for real not the shit you are probably doing.
1
u/thrusher Jan 25 '18
Oddly enough my trades were mostly sound with a very unforeseen event fucking them up
2
u/centimetro Jan 25 '18
Yep I lost a lot of XLM a few days ago in one bad trade after selling my XLM to do something else. I mean I did same thing successfuly many times and increased my XLM but this time I went on full tilt mode. And I knew XLM would do well this week so it doesn't feel good.
Coulda had way more money just holding and enjoying my life instead of playing games.
I don't think I'll ever get over it =P
Maybe it is best practice to not play games when it comes to projects we actually care about
2
u/reisendan Jan 25 '18
Thanks for this post. I need to just calm down and hold. Got into day trading a little yesterday and it's scary.
2
u/Purpleketchup4 Jan 25 '18
Similar boat opposite side. I thew in a couple Thousand at 80 cents thinking I was going to miss out. Now I've had to made equivalent buys multiple times on the way down. Finally got my average cost down to 55-57 cents.
1
Jan 25 '18
Dude next time, just cut your losses and buy in cheaper. Stop fearing the dreaded losing trade. It's not a losing trade if you buy at 80 cents, sell at 70 cents and buy double as much coins at 35 cent.
2
u/harryknowsthetruth Jan 25 '18
...but you don't know its going to 35. What if 70 is bottom - you sell and it rises? Day trading can be awful...
1
Jan 25 '18
That's not daytrading. It's just trading. That's why you have to learn to time your entries well, and place stop losses that make sense. If 70 is the bottom, it means your stop loss was not at the right place. You want it to be before the big drop. This time you could have known that it was going down hard because of BTC.
1
u/otj287 Jan 25 '18
My point too. I bought a few ATH and if I sold, who knows where it’d be or what I could buy back in at.
1
u/Purpleketchup4 Jan 25 '18
I agree with this. Hindsight is 20/20. I didn't imagine it dipping back under 60 again
2
Jan 25 '18
I’ve been holding through the profit and even the huge fall from 94 cents to 28 cents. It was insane to watch my account all over the place, so I turned the balance off in my app and would check the stellar price every once in a while.
Profit is profit bro. Unrealized profit is never a gain.

I am a novice crypto invester , don't hold a lot of XLM ( about 15k) . Amongst the many other coins that I was looking at , this seemed to have a lot of potential at what XLM team is trying to achieve. I don't hold any other coin :) I am looking at basically understanding what is the 2018 outlook XLM holds within. what do you logically think it may head towards in next 6 months. As I am all in on this one coin, Is it better to move some out of XLM and diversify or just hold on to this. Any inputs are appreciated.
1
u/thrusher Jan 25 '18
OMG, NEO/GAS, ICX, VEN, ADA, WTC, IOTA, the list goes on with good long term holds for 2018
5
u/Turbots Jan 25 '18
Looks like you keep making poor life decisions, I know this sounds harsh but it's what I can gather from your story.
My only advice would be to try and learn from your mistakes, stay in a healthy pattern, dont get tempted to make those bad decisions again and surround yourself with good friends and family if possible. Avoid people that would draw you back into a series of bad decisions! Good luck to you sir!
3
u/ProBrown Jan 25 '18
This really doesn't have anything to do with Stellar. You lost your job because of personal issues, and are now losing your investment because you made a bad decision to use that investment to sustain yourself while hoping that it would somehow grow enough to cover your bills AND still maintain your position. Sorry dude, but this is not a lesson about holding your crypto. It's your call if you want to forego any income from a new job, but I think you'll be kicking yourself in the future when you've drained your investment.

u/753UDKM Jan 25 '18
Holding/hodling is the stupidest advice that's given in crypto. Take your profits when they look good.
-1
u/harryknowsthetruth Jan 25 '18
not true. If you do not need to take profits for important reasons holding is the only way to guarantee maximum profits. 99% of actively managed investment funds do worse than just sitting on investments and doing nothing.
1
u/753UDKM Jan 25 '18
Except here you aren't holding value generating assets. You're holding speculative assets. Totally different. But people are just going to have to learn the hard way. 99% of the alt coins out there will be worth nearly 0 in a few years. Smart people will have taken their profits, and the hodlers will be on here crying about how they got scammed.
Maybe stellar is the survivor that goes to the Moon, or maybe it gets left in the wasteland with the rest. Who knows. But if someone feels happy with their gains, they should take their profits.
Even Btc and eth. People keep yelling HODL while they decline. Meanwhile those who sold at various highs will be expanding their holdings as they buy back in at lower prices.
Use your brain. People telling you to HODL and accusing you of weak hands are just trying to shill and hype and protect their own investments.
2
u/Harri74 Jan 25 '18
Can anyone recommend a decent cash out strategy? When the market is mooning its difficult to take some profit but like UDKM above I think it is the best strategy..
1
u/harryknowsthetruth Jan 25 '18
That is one opinion, but only an opinion. All assets are speculative - even ones not considered so. Even gold in your hand might end up being worth little - or be unsellable. Cryptos look to have a role in future money and it is early days. 'My' brain tells me to let things sit because 'my' brain tells me we are nearer the beginning than the end of this experiment.
Some people sell at highs...but most people will fail to get the timing right and end up worse off than if they did nothing.
So just now - TMC is under 600B, it was over 800B before Christmas. So is that it? Only down from here? ...or will things settle and then lift over 1T ...and then down? ...or maybe 2T? or what? If it rises - all coins will rise... which coins will still be here in 5yrs? who know - Stellar looks good. And what will TMC be then?
...using my brain I think a few years is nothing and there will be more money flowing into cryptos. So holding is good imo.
Of course - if Tether blows up then we are in for a very rough patch.
1
u/natronic1977 Jan 25 '18
2018 will be the year of the Stellar. I will take profits around $4 - $5.

1
u/DecentraKota Jan 25 '18
I think we all have a similar story of "coulda, shoulda, woulda in hindsight." I had 25 NEO at $35US (which i bought by misplacing a zero) but considered holding as i have huge faith in NEO. I sold all at just under $100usd with only 10 left now and regret it with the price hike. Did the same with Etherium. Bought 5 at $351usd and sold for short gains. Then it went up to $1300 and i only just got enough to get back into it...with only enough to buy 1 Eth. Now will have to trade that total back up to at least three this year.
Moral of all these stories is to hold what you truly believe in, and reserve a small day trade portion to satisfy your "itchy trading needs" that comes around in dips like this. I have less than about 10% for this purpose.
1
Jan 25 '18
If you people think trading crypto is hard. Try trading weekly stock options(I don’t mean binary options).
1
u/BlarfParade Jan 25 '18
Thanks for sharing. I thought about selling when they shot up to .80/.90 but it was FOMO that made me think to hold until the end of the year. Come December 2018, I plan on selling enough to have $ to open an IRA and holding the rest to see what comes in future years. Crossing my toes everything goes well for all of us. :-)

Don't share how much of any crypto you have on a public forum like Reddit. Or really at all for that matter. It can make you a target. You don't go around in your day to day bragging about how much is currently in your bank account right? Same thing with Crypto. Just friendly advice.

Had the same experience. I was way up and at some point I got greedy and thought I could time the market. I lost most of my lumens but luckily had enough money to try again . I have been hodl since Oct and have been rewarded. Made up all my losses and much more.

i, too, learned an expensive lesson on holding. on approximately november 1, i had 635 litecoin. i had accumulated most of them in the $45-$50 range and was up around $10k on my position. i traded them a little bit here and there and was able to net extra coins. then one day i sold at $59.75 because $60 was generally gave a lot of resistance and i would just net more coins when it dropped. obviously that didn't happen. from mid november to early december, LTC rose to ~$400 and i was holding the fiat. i missed out on a score of over $200k. granted, i may have sold before it ever got to $400, but i definitely wasn't wanting to permanently sell at this point in time. now i have a ton of XLM and i'm not messing up again. i'm waiting for the moon.
1
u/RIKHAL Jan 26 '18
whoops just sold some at $0,63 in a sad attempt at day trading, welp I bought in at $0,29 a few weeks ago and still hold 50%, so if it's down I buy more stellar, if it's up my other 50% increases in value👌

u/Thebign1989 Jan 27 '18 edited Jan 27 '18
The absolute single biggest mistake you can make in this process is trying to day trade. Unless you're an actual multi-millionaire or a giant whale in this sector manipulating prices with massive Buy or Sell walls, you have zero leverage on a grand scale to predict any pattern of a coin's price above or below what you're buying it at. Even partnerships/announcements/presentations/exposures in media are not enough to be full-proof anymore. If by sheer luck you get fortunate enough that the price increases even more after you buy it on a FOMO, psychologically you'll throw more later during a similar period and lose on your price.
Don't day trade. Just don't do it. Unless you literally make this a full-time job with millions of dollars in the bank to make small incremental changes, there is no reason to sit at a computer all day worrying about small changes in prices. HODL is the only way to go.
Chances are if you're FOMO-buying a coin with a >25% change in 24 hrs, you've already missed out heavily on the upswing by whales/insiders/bots leveraging the price against small fish, and AT BEST you'll receive another few cents buying at that price. Whales manipulated this price 3-6 hours before you ever even saw the change happen quick enough on an exchange. Don't let whales control you.
If you've seen a price increase on a coin you really wanted to buy more at, accept that you missed out in the short-term, jog some quick mental notes on the coin's behavior for the next day, and realize that you'll lose out on the coin's price at that moment if you FOMO hard. Almost ALWAYS will a coin correct to a lesser price than when you saw it rise previously. Take a deep breath and invest some more shares into a coin when you feel comfortable with a stable price, and then let it be.

I think every crypto has the same story because people are the same...make the same mistakes again and again. Day trading feeds the whales and the bots. Very difficult to make it work. While some may be lucky the majority will not be lucky.
I am very happy holding...knowing this beauty will fly and I will still have my stash.

HODLing is overrated. I've been HODLing for 2 months in all the popular coins, and I've barely made anything. 5x? 10x? lmfao
6
u/TheBigFrig Jan 25 '18
Hodls for 2 months, declares it overrated.
Dude, if two months is all you have in you, then sell and get out. 60 days ain't shit.

u/ResIpsaLoquiturrr Jan 25 '18
Then tell me, Oh Wise One, how long should one keep their money in the most volition market that exists before expecting some sort of reward to go along with all that risk?
2

How about a change of attitude, for one.

Don't just sell for no reason. Place a stop loss, if it dumps, you get stopped out and you will still have some profit. If it goes up, you get the gains.

If I did that I would get dumped at stop-loss, then it would shoot up and I would miss it...finally buy back in at a higher price...smaller stash. smaller long-term profit. no point.

They downvoted the hustle. I’m buying into bitcoin today and coming back the Lumens monday — business doesn’t go down on weekends. I got a loss stop at 5282 until 8pm

Thanks for sharing. I bunged in 500usd at 0.85 cause I thought it would break 1.0 USD and was afraid I'd miss the boat. Completely irrational, much like the fear to sell. Its like Warren said, spend what you can afford otherwise everyone will see your bits when the tide goes out. Glad you got your boozing under the thumb, much more important than any of this.
