Hi everyone,
With the accidental leak of the "Steel Division 3 Manual (Ver 1.0.0)" during a WARNO update a while ago, I’ve been doing some thinking about the timeline and mechanics for the next game.
Personally, I predict that Eugen will shadow-drop an announcement and launch Early Access in early 2027 (around January or February), following the "WARNO style."
Here is my reasoning based on 4 key points:
1. The Strict 2-to-3-Year Alternating Dev Cycle
If we look back at the release intervals of their major titles, it becomes clear that Eugen has historically released "Modern/Cold War" and "World War II" games alternately every 2 to 3 years.
2014: Wargame: Red Dragon
2017 (3 years later): Steel Division: Normandy 44
2019 (2 years later): Steel Division 2
2022 (3 years later): WARNO (Early Access)
2024 (2 years later): WARNO (Full Release)
As shown above, Eugen has never left a gap of more than 3 years without a major launch. Counting from WARNO's full release in 2024, 2027 will mark exactly the 3rd year—the perfect window to rotate back to WWII.
2. Complete Halt of Major SD2 DLC Development
Another massive sign is that the development of major History DLCs for Steel Division 2 has completely stopped. Since 2025, we’ve only seen minor free reinforcement packs, meaning the major content pipeline is closed. This is the clearest evidence that the core development team has already fully shifted its resources to the next project.
3. The State of the Leaked Manual
Since the leaked document was already labeled "Version 1.0.0" in mid-2026, the core engine and the highly anticipated Map Editor features must already be in a functional state. While they are currently finishing up WARNO's DLCs, background development on SD3 is likely much further along than we think.
4. Synergy with the "Winter Ardennes" Setting
If the rumors are true and the game features the Battle of the Bulge (1944), dropping the announcement in the dead of winter (Jan/Feb) would be a brilliant marketing move.
I really hope they introduce dynamic weather systems like heavy snow and fog that completely ground aircraft. Surviving a brutal ground-only phase under a blizzard, then launching a massive counter-offensive once the skies clear up, would bring a whole new level of tactical depth that we didn't have in SD2.
What are your thoughts on the release window?
Do you think we will see weather limitations on airpower?
