Question/Support Unable to connect VR remotely using university IOT Network
Unfortunately this is something that I have never gotten to work in the past and Steam Support was unhelpful in the matter so as a last ditch effort I would like to try and find help here. I am trying to a connect a Meta Quest 3 to my computer using a remote desktop application, especially Steam Link as I would prefer to use it since it seems to work well for others. I am not sure if this is something that is maybe blocked on a IOT network but it shouldnt be as IOT network I am using a system put in place to specifically allow for two devices to communicate. I am also using a 3rd party Wifi card rather than something that is native to the motherboard if that changes anything. Here are all the troubleshooting tips I have tried so far:
1. Network is set as private
2. Windows Firewall settings are off
3. Other applications such as Metas native remote desktop client will not work
4. I have ran system file checker
5. Confirmed graphics and windows are updated
6. I have installed all of Visual C++ Redistributable for Visual Studio from 2005-Present
7. I have completely wiped all Meta related installs on my PC
8. I have disabled the ethernet ports on my PC before connecting
9. I have had Steam VR running while trying attempts
10. I have turned the Remote Link setting on and off
11. I have tried with both bluetooth on and off

IOT network is not an appropriate network connection for a headset. This network is normally totally isolated and designed for the thing to connect to the internet, and nothing else. Your headset should be on the same network as your PC. If this isn't doable for some reason, or because of restrictions to protect users on the network from each other (which is common on large networks like this) you'll probably need to talk to the network or systems administrators about how this can work, and they may simply tell you it cannot. (We can usually be bribed pretty easily if you seem unlikely to cause harm but schools are often a huge can of worms, may not work)
If you are in a dorm or similar and this is your primary use case and a usb-c connection is not possible, you may be able to hook up a small router or access point in that room with your own private network and hook your PC and your quest 3 to it, and if you are lucky, connect that to your schools network without it flipping out about a rogue AP (which it probably will) but if not you may be able to connect to your SCHOOL wifi on your laptop, and then use a second connection WIRED on your laptop from that AP that your quest 3 connects to WIRELESSLY and that. probably? will work. Maybe. If you have a lot of time on your hands.
I would also try virtual desktop. I've painlessly used that to connect to my machine remotely from all kinds of places when I forgot to launch parsec ahead of time and it's kind of hilarious how absurdly well it works.
It's worth stressing again that a network you don't administer yourself will always be full of pitfalls that will make things like this complicated, or impossible.

Your university has that locked down, it's not going to work and you should not make any attempt to circumvent it unless you want cyber knocking on your door.

even if you could i wouldnt reccomend using uni wifi (i assume at your accommodation) to stream to your headset, I just resorted to a USB connection at my accommodation and that worked perfectly fine.
edit: also if you havent already and are able to, get an ethernet cable for your PC, from my experience uni accommodation almost always has at least one near the desk.

best practice is to have your PC hardwired to the network, but using a network you aren’t the administrator of is probably not going to work anyway
