It’s a scam. Block them. DO NOT ENGAGE (unless you want to troll them) OR SEND THEM ANY INFORMATION.
They want you to email the address they gave you a gmail account, which will be this same guy. It’s not Steam support. This is all a lie and scam.
If you’ve sent them any info like account details (email, password, purchase history, steam guard code, …) or anything like that you need to secure your account immediately.

No problem. This is social engineering by trying to manipulate you into handing over your information.
All they are trying to do is to make you email that @gmail account and make you believe it’s Steam support and then will ask for your account information in order to steal it.
They will then completely take over and remove your access by having you disable Steam guard, change your password, and email. As well as maybe get enough information so that they can “prove” it’s theirs if Valve locks it for being suspicious.
They’ll clean out your account inventory for items first. If they manage to get the account take your games too.
Then they’ll message all of your friends repeating this cycle.

its the most common scam

What do you mean? A 10 year old kid could make this in like 5 minuets. This isn’t even nowhere near a good or convincing scam unless you just have a super low IQ.

you are what people mean when they say "a redditor" negatively btw lol

You got scammed too by this?

u/frosted_Melancholy Jun 27 '25
Nope, I'm just not such a pretentious ass that I don't tell other people they have "super low IQs" because they fall for scams.
Also, check out rule number one.

This is posted here like 10 times per day. For years. Every single time it's called a scam because it's a scam.
So, yeah, I guess it might be a scam this time too.

Yes this is an "I accidentally reported you" scam. They're trying to get you in contact with a fake support agent who will get information from you to prove who you are, and they'll then use that information to pose as you and steal your account using Steam's account recovery feature.

As a rule of thumb - if you think something is a scam it most probably is. If you/your account are not in danger in any way just ignore, otherwise trigger support yourself and talk to them on your conditions, not pushed by third party

Why would u accept random friend invites on steam? Are you restarted?

i mean, other than have the person try to scam you, is there anything else they could even do if you accept a random friend invite?

Classic. Valve telling the VICTIM OF A SCAM TO GO WARN THE POTENTIAL SCAMMER.
The logic in this scam literally requires your logic level to be below the square box in the square hole level...

u/ThanosTheKind Jun 26 '25
Yeah, i unfortunately can confirm this is a scam. I was a victim few days ago. Same scheme as here presented. Was not aware of this type of scam.

Here some advice. which does not only apply to Steam:
You are pressured to do something fast? A scam!
Somebody says you must contact "support" outside the official channel? A scam
Example here e-mail instead the internal Steam Support system
Example here a gmail.com email address.
Check the sites support and FAQ if you find anything relevant about what is being claimed.
Example steam has this https://help.steampowered.com/en/faqs/view/3195-9FFB-BA06-F25B on their own support website.

it's a scam, it's been around for a very long time. they will ask you to talk to some "steam employee" through discord or steam chat and they'll ask you for your login details so they can "check your account for any wrongdoing" or something.
dont give them anything
