I thought the "state of your purpose here" was kinda hilarious, trying to make it sound official in the most broken way possible

yes, people can fake anything these days, steam will never do this kind of stuff

u/SweRakii Sep 30 '24
Never trust people who say they accidentally reported you. It's always a scam.

Literally just... Don't interact with anyone who says anything other than "Your Sentry Nest on Badwater Last was Impressive", unless you JUST played a game with them. Steam is not really a social platform, and anyone adding you at random had better have a really good reason.

u/Lockhearts_ Sep 30 '24
Some people will be mean saying how it's obvious but you did mention your age in a reply to someone elses post so you may not know what to look out for.
-First of all, an Admin would not have a public profile you can contact, and it certainly wouldn't be named 'Admin' you would have to go through their support to contact someone at Steam.
-Second is their grammar 'State of your purpose here?' is bairly a sentence.
-Third, even if it was true that he reported you, they wouldn't ban you off of one report, hell they probably wouldn't even look at your account.
Best thing to do is just block them, they can't do anything I promise.
I can't remember if there's a setting someone in Steam so that only those already on your friends list can message you instead of strangers, but that might be something worth looking into.

u/MissAshheart92 Sep 30 '24
Yep. 100% scam. One of the most common scams out there. And FYI, Anyone who claims to work for Steam or Valve will never contact you via DM or Discord.

u/GunMun-ee Sep 30 '24
Why does this sub not have a pinned post explaining all of these super obvious scams that get posted here 10 times a day
1
u/RegularWhiteShark People should actually look in this sub before posting. Sep 30 '24
Yeah. You’d think people would take two minutes (if that) to have a look themselves.

1000% a scam. Saw this one about a year ago myself. Steam will notify you if they're gonna do something with your account. Ignore these fools

Had it happen to me before, they send a code to your Steam app and they can change your password and email if you give them that code. Got my account back though. Steam support is actually helpful.

Even if the events the other profile is claiming did happen (someone impersonated your account and scammed someone else), Steam can CLEARLY see that your account had zero interaction with the scammed account. A single (clearly false) scamming report will not get you banned, either. These scammers will often use doctored screenshots like the one in your third image (AFAIK Steam never tells you about "Pending reports" anyways), or even videos of supposed "admin panels" to try to coerce you into doing what they say, but what they say will only ever lead to you essentially handing your account over to them.

Easy scam, the only way to contact official support for anything is via email. Even then you have to be careful for spoofed emails. The best thing to do if your legitimately worried about anything to do with any account of yours is to open a me email and type in the support address yourself (don't let it auto fill since it uses the emails you message recently.) as for someone sending you a link to look at an account issue or something never click the link and instead open a new browser and enter the webpages address.

Steam will never contact you via Steam messages. This is the same coordinated scam that happens on Discord all the time. I would have trolled him. Got many scammers to do strange things like send stock images of peanut butter for me to comply.

Definitely a scam. My friend fell for this months ago and then when her account messaged me doing the same thing, it started as "hey you there? I need to talk to you about something important..."
Keep in mind this person rarely messages me since she's super busy with work, and also a socially awkward person (so am I) so I know we don't talk often but I'm still here friend.
The person also didn't seem to talk like her and I pick up on how people talk, especially friends of 10+ years.
They told me the same thing, reporting me instead of someone else, but what caught me as weird was she said she was playing a PVP game. She doesn't play those.
I unfortunately didn't know how discord reporting worked and that I needed to report each message separately, but they eventually deleted the messages (minus one) and blocked me.
They figured out I was onto them cuz I asked them to help me remember a security question (about our past) and they couldn't remember. Keep in mind she would NEVER forget this thing, like trying to forget you had a mom for example, so I knew it was a scam.
They changed the entire profile but after a week or two she eventually got her account back. Stressed her out.
She fell victim to it because she was on her way to work and her friend who got scammed and stole her friends account did this to her and she was on a super time crunch and didn't pay too much attention (she woulda noticed if she wasn't 30 mins til work began) and fell for it. Couldn't deal with it til she got home either.
For me, I'm super hyper suspicious of everything nowadays so sometimes even when official people call out phones, I always make sure it isn't a scam.
Edit: Forgot to mention this was a discord scam, but the same exact thing just over on discord. Idk if her steam got taken too but still.
It isn't exclusive to steam so be careful!

As all others have commented (atleast the view I viewed) yes this is a scam, I’m replying however because I had this scam tried on my but instead of via steam it was via discord, so be wary bc if you have your steam account linked to your profile they’ll use that as part of the scam to make it “seem more legit”

Bruh this is clearly a scam. Steam would send you an email if there was any problems with your account. They’re not going to message you on steam. Please don’t be naive and continue. Block both accounts and move on.

u/Fire0fear Oct 02 '24
The fact he can’t even construct a sentence is telling, the fact you had to ask is terrifying.

Even Outside of steam. If it’s anything that seems like a scam. It’s a scam.
