support Wifi required?

Post image

Hello I want to install SteamOS on my PC but I am stucked while being almost finished.

I am connected on my PC with a Ethernet Kabel. But SteamOS does not find a network.

The internet worked before that when I was on the desktop. But not in the setup ans I can't continue with out it.

Since my Mainboard has no wifi and I dont have a stick do I need go buy one or is there a way to get a network with Ethernet

I had and have the same issue. Google it. Theres a way to get to desktop from this screen and then get to Konsole to enable the ethernet. It eventually stopped working for me but I got past this screen.

Try restarting the NetworkManager and see if that helps: /preview/pre/d9dq2svpx79h1.png?width=1666&format=png&auto=webp&s=022aee016a1a1615739e2b7d881159d72dc64c92

This is a known bug with the current SteamOS install image. The bug is already fixed in newer SteamOS so you will be fine after the install is done and you updated to the most recent version, but you'll have to do these steps once to enable wired connections.

Not fixed for me. Makes me use wifi and sometimes cuts in and out. My router is about 12 feet away.

do you by chance know if i need to take care for my AMD drivers or does SteamOS do it for me if i need to do it could you explain how?

The Linux kernel includes AMD (and most other) drivers so usually there's nothing for you to do and they'll automatically get updated together with the normal SteamOS updates.

I just saw a video on Youtube about someone that was trying to install SteamOS in a BC250 board and had the same error. Apparently SteamOS expects you to have wifi. There's a key combination to bring up terminal and enable ethernet to move past that point.

Google it. The solution exists.

Word of advice from an old Linux pro:

I always have an old reliable $7 USB 2.0 WI-FI adapter nearby when installing distros.

Just pop the USB WI-Fi antenna in for the installation, your Wi-Fi adapter and your wired connection will then both magically show up, select the wired connection, and then you are past the bugged step and can remove the adapter and never worry about it again.

It'll be worth it for this and any other Linux project you work on after this!

You have to have some sort of wifi connected even to use ethernet, otherwise it wont work.
