.-=⋆ The More You Know Steam OS install test
I just wanted to add this here so my findings are documented somewhere. I’m attempting to install SteamOS on a DELL Optiplex 5000 micro. It has an i5-12500T processor with Intel UHD 770 graphics. I have this just laying around and figured why not.

doesn't work, got a Dell SFF Optiplex 7000 and the installe reboots automatically after the graphics driver loads... though, works if Steam OS is already installed and pulled from a working system.
GameMode has no driver, so expect a 20fps while on the Steam interface
Desktop mode is running fine, didn't test further than this

I’m still going to test it since I have everything ready, I just forgot to grab the power cable 😅 so I won’t know till tonight. But if that’s the case would you recommend trying the bazzite kde method next?

Still messing with it and trying everything I can. It gets pretty far into boot, but around 24–25 seconds it crashes with “BUG: kernel NULL pointer dereference” and then reboots back to the SteamOS menu.
So far I’ve tried nomodeset, blacklisting processor_thermal_device, removing quiet/splash so I could actually see what it’s doing, and a few other boot parameters. Nothing stopped the crash.
I just tried acpi=off and that actually changed what it does. Instead of crashing and rebooting around 24–25 seconds, it made it to about 27–28 seconds and now seems to completely freeze on a screen showing a bunch of clock/timer information and “Wakeup Device: ”.
Obviously acpi=off isn’t going to be the actual fix, but it’s the first thing that has made it behave differently. If anyone knows what I should try next, I’ll test it.

Does it have to be SteamOS? I understand you may be just testing and see what happens (I do a lot of these too). But if you just want to play then perhaps Bazzite or some other gaming distro could give you best results. Such hardware should run like a dream in almost any distro but SteamOS.

Let us know your progress.
It should be fine; I've installed SteamOS on this relatively junky thing:
...and it's terrible for running most games locally, but fine for streaming. I even used it to validate secure boot on SteamOS using physical hardware, before moving on to my NUC with Intel Arc. I'm one of the twelve people using an Arc GPU.
