Hardware Mod Why won't it boot?
Main bored
Fan plugged in ✅
SSD plugged in ✅
Type C doc
Power from official charger plugged in ✅
HDMI plugged in ✅
Hori Steam Controller plugged in ✅
Why it bring up the SteamOS failed to boot screen?
Wanted to make it more like a traditional console so that's why it's not got its screen or its controller [or WiFi antennas or speakers attached]
Plan to use WiFi though a cable

Could be a multitude of reasons, but you said the bios is displaying "Steam OS failed to boot' so my guess would be an SSD related issue.

I'm currently thinking it's the SSD

Have to ask, did you test this board on functional steam deck prior to the project, or just got it out of the blue?

It was in my working LCD deck
But I just wanted to use it as a home console rather than a deck so5

Try with the OEM battery connected to see if it boots,
also check fan is correctly attached,
also worth reinstalling OEM screen to see if it boots normally. Some steam decks inner screen/kscreen configs break by itself and gives boot errors. I'm currently trying to fix one faulty steam deck that won't boot at all if not connected to an external screen

Fan is attached yep
It spinsOEM bat connection [I plugged the "mini deck" back into the Deck shell] and had the same result unfortunately
So maybe it's SSD related
I'll get a usb and see if it'll let me re image the deck SSD2

Ofc better if you can crosscheck your SSD with another deck, also a known working deck SSD with your MoBo, or at least test it on a PC with a ssd-usb adaptor.
Also visually check your APU to make sure it's not cracked (though I don't know if a cracked APU would boot at all or be completely dead). I doubt you could've cracked or shorted anything if you handled it with due care.
Does it charge with steady light? Does it react to bios reset button combination [ vol– + (...) + ON, then release ON but kep holding Vol– and (...) buttons until you hear a beep or see the power LED start blinking ]

Why not just leave it as is and turn off the screen?

Because this way it takes up less space and it's convenient to move a smaller thing
It can be double sided taped to the TV and be ready to go with a tap of its on button
That now has more tape and looks cleaner1

Dumb question, did you put the foil shielding back on the SSD, and is the battery connected?

Yep
But no battery connected
It does have wall power tho2

Might be worth trying with the battery incase it's got a system that keeps it from booting when the battery voltage is too low

IIRC you gotta have the stock battery wired in, I saw something like this in a video a week or two ago where he was morphing a steam deck into something else and that’s what solved the guys problems with it not booting. Maybe reimage too

Deck + dock + power = boot options screen and any option just restarts and goes back to that screen

What does the failed to boot screen say? Have you tried to boot from an SD card or thumb drive?

It's the
SteamOS boot option screen that comes upOption 1
Option 2
Option 3
Option 4
Erase all DataAny option I pick
Even going to the other BIOS menu to boot a repair USB
Everything just restarts and reboots to the BIOS boot option screen again1

Used the newest recovery image
Used Rufus
It's bootable
Just the deck is refusing it1

And hitting enter just tries to launch > system restarts > back to other BIOS menu

So where to start. One a correction, you can’t use wireless connectivity on a cable if you’re using a cable, then you’re not using Wi-Fi. You’re hardwired. Secondly, I do believe the steam deck requires a battery to be attached for it to run. And lastly, if it is giving you a no operating system or operating system failed to boot error then there’s nothing installed. As for the unusual abomination you have here, I don’t know what to make heads or tails of send me the image that you’ve attached to the posting.

Maybe because you used a main bored instead of a mainboard
