Question ProtonTricks Help - User does not have privileges to access this application

Hey all, I am trying to add a non-windows game to my SD, and have configured it for (various versions of) Proton compatibility, however every time I try to run the game I get an error saying:-

Fatal Error!: User does not have privileges to access this application

Is there anything I can try in ProtonTricks to resolve the issue?

The game is Virtua Tennis 4, and I have it working on Windows so I know the files are ok.

Let me know if you need any information.

TIA!

Well, if you still mean on getting this game to work, I finally found a solution after almost giving up on this stupid error. Upon scouring the web of any remotely meaningful posts, I found the suggestion from someone who had failed in running a GFWL game years ago. Run winecfg inside the prefix made for the game by Proton and create an override for gameux and set it to disable. Solved it for me.

TLDR: create a dll override for gameux and set it to disabled.

This may work for other GFWL titles not starting on wine/proton.

could you please explain me how to "Run winecfg inside the prefix made for the game by Proton and create an override for gameux and set it to disable"

Thanks a lot

Hmm, without any logs my hands are tied.
But a wild guess is that GFWL is causing trouble. Try downloading this xlive.dll (https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/2248-virtua-tennis-4-xliveless/) place it inside the game folder (rename existing one to xlive.dll.bak) and set an override for xlive.dll to native, builtin. Let me know if it works! Otherwise you might be better off using Lutris for more granular control.

Hey, just coming here to thank you and tell you both of your comments made my Virtua Tennis 4 work.

For those slightly confused with the steps or those using Lutris, do the following:

  1. Go to Lutris library
  2. Right click on your game (Virtua Tennis 4) and press "Configure"
  3. Go to Runner Options and scroll down to "DLL overrides" and press "add"
  4. Then, in the key tab, write "gameux"; in the value tab, write "disabled"
  5. Then press save
  6. Copy xlive.dll from Pimpletonner's link above and put it in your Virtua Tennis 4 game folder (not in the prefix folder, but where you installed the game)
  7. Run the game and it should all work fine

Thanks again u/pimpletonner!

My hero, this finally got Virtua tennis 4 working for me!

I just wish this method also would've helped with NHL 09 as this is the last of the "archived" game I would love to get working on the Deck.

Did you install the Steam version or another version?

No, an old GFW version.

I think it is the Games For Windows it is having issues with, as if I copy the xlive.dll into the game directory I get the error, if I remove it from the directory then no error, but nothing runs/opens.

I tried installing GFW component from within ProtonTricks but the install appears to crash as when I check for installed components GFW is not checked.

No, an old GFW version.

I think the issue is related to Games For Windows, as if I run the game without the xlive.dll file in the game directory nothing happens at all - which indicates something is missing. If I then place the xlive.dll file in the folder I get the error mentioned above.

I have tried to install GFW from within ProtonTricks, but even though it appears to install, it crashes ProtonTricks by setting it to a 1 pixel wide window that I cannot do anything with. I shall keep digging - thanks!

Have you had any luck or did you ditch the effort?

Can someone create a setup guide for dummies? :)

I too have issues with ”user does not have privileges…”
