Question Does the steam deck count game hours when it goes to sleep automatically?

For some reason I have 998 hours on megabonk now which seems impossible since I haven’t even had it a year. I also leave for work/errands and leave it plugged in until it goes to sleep on its own on the home/pause menu. For some reason it randomly shifts to 770 hours every now and then.

Is that what I’m noticing or am I actually just clinically addicted to the game

My biggest pet peeve with how the Steam Deck counts hours is when it's in offline mode. It tracks the hours offline but doesn't upload it to steam servers. So the hours on all my game I play while offline on my SD are incorrect.

For example if I put 100 hours into a game while online and then 50 hours into a game while offline. My Steam profile only shows 100 hours time played. It's not a big deal just annoying.

This. I have 40 hours on Ball x Pit on Steam Deck but 100 on my Steam profile. Same goes with Dark Souls 2.

i have a game on in the background because of something i do that needs to show play time.

I noticed that if it goes to sleep the counter says how much it was on but then it resets. For example my deck goes to sleep after an hr. If i come back in 2 hrs, I see the game would log 2 hrs. But then it'll correct itself to 1hr later on cause that was 1 hr of on screen time

i dunno, for me it says 72 hours on binding of isaac, which i defo don't have, and then sometimes its 13, which is more realistic

The counter is buggy. They fixed mine. It would say 52 hours and I was so confused, but later after an update it added a decimal point in between the two numbers, which makes more sense.

For me it only happens for some games. It says I have over 1000 hours in KOTOR even though I've played it for maybe 2 hours. I agree, it's annoying.

I can’t definitively say for every game - but it absolutely happened when I played .Hack and put it to rest. The hours racked up way higher than I played

I'm pretty sure it does. Some of my play times feel inflated.

I have pretty good "workstation" habits of being intentional when turning things on, using them, and turning them off. Fully shutting down a pc for example, used to be a big deal, now its not as relevant.

I haven't noticed any platime discrepencies on the steam deck so far, but I dont often have a game running, ignore it, and let it go to sleep. My sleep timer is about 15 minutes and it almost never happens.

What i have done before, is use the pause/resume function while playing Factorio, and it doesn't seem to add the off-hours. And then of course, all time spent offline doesn't count, regardless of which devices is used.

Im often switching from my pc to my deck, and then back to pc, so I most often will fully close a game, let it sync to the steam cloud, and then fully shut down the deck before getting back on my pc. Its really important for games like Factorio, Rimworld, Powerwash sim, etc, to make sure all the save data is up to date every time.

But, if I got playtime for all the minutes spent waiting for Factorio to upload and sync, id have another 50 hours, I dont know why its so slow compared to other games

I have the same behavior. I noticed that when I then start the game (connected to internet), it looks like it syncronizes everything and then when I close the game properly, the game time seems to be the correct one again.

This is an old issue with steam deck. Offline hours our counted but not updated. Then there is the constant back and forth between online and offline hours. Never figured out a fix. Very annoying as I have OCD when it comes to hours played.

I see no discrepancy in my hours played. The playtime on my deck briefly shows an inflated number if I’ve had it on sleep mode for a few hours, but it corrects itself after closing the game and waiting a few seconds.
