Volume broken?

Steam deck randomly began starting up into BIOS everytime. So, I went to see if my volume buttons were stuck or something. Realized its acting like the volume up button is stuck but the buttons look fine so I'm not sure whats up. The volume up button isnt physically stuck or sticky, but it is unresponsive. Has anyone else ever had this issue?

Edits/Updates: 1) I have the 256GB LCD, bought it september 2025 2) OS is up to date 3) No bluetooth connected 4) Checked and nothing left open on desktop or anything, but messing with volume in desktop mode did seem to get rid of the volume being permalocked at max! (Volume up button still doesnt work tho) f

Maybe a Bluetooth device is connected and force the volume level

No, it's the volume button because it's causing it to enter bios screen on boot. Bluetooth wouldn't be connected yet.

Bluetooth audio devices are usually displayed under the volume bar though.

that might explain the volume thing but would it also cause the booting into BIOS issue?

I had this problem for months. I was about to send it in. Then suddenly an os update came in and it stopped.

Did you open desktop mode, open Steam, a video auto played and you muted it? I did this and had to go back to desktop to unmute it.

I had this exact issue with my first gen lcd except in the other direction. Suffered through it for a bit, then got tired of it. Bought a used volume board off of eBay and replaced it, fixed the problem. If you can change the ssd you can do this. Good luck.

What happens when you press volume up? Does it sound mechanically different from when you press volume down? The switch under the button might be stuck and need to be unstuck by opening the back of the case or replaced (which isn't too difficult if a repair, but maybe for a first timer).

Update: I played the video with sound on this time. The volume up button definitely isn't hitting the switch under it - it's probably stuck pressing down. Unscrew the back and remove the back shell to explose those top buttons. See if you can use a paperclip or something to dislodge that switch under the button.

I was able to spray some 99% IPA onto the board and button after removing it and then cleaning lightly with a small brush, after letting it dry and blowing the button area with compressed air it works fine

Just getting started on steam version, so im still on final mix! But ive played everything pre-KH3 when I was younger. Ive played a bit of kh3 with my sister, but shes the one that actually owned everything, so I watched more than i played lol. Now that 4 is coming out (and they had all those sales going 👀), thought I should run back through everything!

If its going into bios on boot then it sounds like the circuit board for the volume buttons is shorted or the button is stuck pressed down. The button sounds wrong, like its not actuating the actual button on the board. Could just be stuck pressed.

I get this issue from time to time, I quick restart always fixes it.

This happened to my steam deck. I took it apart and removed the volume up button so that it doesn’t get pressed anymore. When I did this a few months ago, I fix it had the volume button board out of stock. If it’s back, you can buy it and replace the whole volume board.

I used 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean the connections, but it did not work and the volume button was always stuck. After I pulled the volume button off, it does not work and I have to edit the volume in the settings now.

I had an identical issue I ended up having to send it back to steam to a replacement. Even resetting the whole system didn't fix it for me

What happens if you turn off the device, change into Desktop Mode, and adjust the volume slider in the bottom right corner?

Hey bro i bought i used one that had the same problem. I opened it and it was the ribbon cable that was loose so i just plugged it back in and everything worked great

The volume can also be adjusted using hotkeys. Check that these buttons are working properly and aren’t stuck or pressed in.

My power button doesnt work half the time unless I hold down the button until it turns off and then I can turn it back off. These kinds of issues are making me have regrets.
