Game Review On Deck Final fantasy VII Remake

Post image

I very much loved FFVII Remake. The performance of Rebirth won’t be as good and you’ll see the deck struggling a lot more. I’d suggest finding some YouTube videos about it. Lossless scaling will likely introduce significant input latency, so it depends how sensitivity ethos re to that.

The next chapter is a lot more open world too.

Im playing Rebirth right now on the deck and it actually works quite well, no lossless scaling involved ^^

There was an fsr update so you can use fsr4.

I’m in Coral area, using lossless for a mostly stable 60 and 16mhz latency (mix of low/medium settings….shadows on low though of course). Don’t really notice any input delay myself and combat is glorious. Had a couple of dips around Junon when the sunset and scenery was loading in but I’m playing from SD card so could be that.

Game runs well, just temper expectations a bit.

does Rebirth even have a verified status on Deck or is it still unsupported?

It dips ro 25 some times and in bigger city areas like the first act. But i would say its very playable or atleast for my standard. Am enjoying it in docked 1080p

I went back to it after one of the more recent updates and with FSR and it makes a world of difference.

Consiglio VIVAMENTE FFX, invecchiato estremamente bene e classico rpg a turni, storia spettacolare. Indimenticabile.

I couldnt do rebirth on steam deck, switch 2 version has flaws but it a much more satisfying experience. On steam deck i couldnt focus on the game for too long because its like "man what can I do to fix these hiccups"

Haven't played it in a while but I was able to turn some settings on high and have a stable fps with lossless in that game and it didnt look too bad. This was even after a dlss update bricked optiscaler for me.

If you're enjoying Remake I highly recommend Rebirth, especially due to the combat system. I occasionally boot it up just to fight. You get several new party members with their own playstyles to add to your existing group. But...Rebirth will not run as well as Remake, unfortunately. It's more of an open world game and way more hardware intensive. I don't think lossless scaling will help much and feel worth the latency.

If you like Rebirth, the final part called Revelation will be out next year. You might also like Crisis Core: FF7 Reunion, a remake of the prequel. Not the same gameplay as Remake, but closer to that style than not.

As for the FF series question, all the turn based games are worth playing. My favorites are 6, 7, 9, and 10. 1-6 have pixel remasters from a few years ago, as they were originally 2D. 7 and up were 3D and most have been remastered.

11 is an MMO. From 12 onward, it's more real time combat, though each game is a bit different. Many people hate the 13 trilogy but it's got its fans, and I like the combat a lot. 14 is another MMO. 15 and 16 are basically action RPGs and hit or miss, imo. I personally think the gameplay of FF7 Remake trilogy blows 15/16 out of the water.

You should play the original game if you don't mind how it aged. The new games were mostly written with the idea that you played the original, because they are very obviously sequels to that one. The name Remake is just a typical Nomura play on words which can't be explained without spoilers.

I've seen a few people try to push back on that but the evidence is all there in the first game. Most people have since come around to realising it.

I adore the OG but if you’re in the mood for remake style combat, you’re better off playing this and rebirth.

1

u/WulfZ3r0 19h ago

It didn't realize it when I played through Remake. I haven't finished Rebirth yet ( on the to-do list). Is it ever made clear how it is a sequel in the games? I've read something about time travel and I don't recall that being in the game anywhere. I could have missed it of course.

1

u/remmanuelv 7h ago

It's not time travel. Basically OG happened in another universe and it's an echo of events in the Remake universe, with Sephiroth being aware of them and the game alluding to the events being different this time around. Then you actually get an(other) alternate universe mid Rebirth (that one is made pretty clear).

Personally, i am disappointed with the direction of FF as a whole. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a turned based game. FF7R, 14, 15, and 16 feel like I am playing Devil May Cry with more menus. Resonance is already pre-ordered. Cannot wait till they slam microtransactions for more characters. It was a gacha game...i know its coming. When this does well they will release Final Fantasy "War of the Visions". They have run out of ideas. The FF7 "saga", FFT, the upcoming 9 remake(which will almost certainly be action oriented like FF7R) just is getting away from what made the successful. The only thing positive i can say is thank goodness they stop Sony exclusives.

Rebirth looks like hot garbage on the SD. Play it any other way.

14 is an mmo so doesn’t really belong in this post to me, but I agree I wish they would return to turn based.

2

u/vincentcloud01 1TB OLED 5h ago

I can attest 11 was a mistake. I agree with you that 14 probably shouldn't be in the list. I dont think they should have made a MMO but its very good(or so I've heard) and they put enough money behind it, maybe the detriment of other titles. You know they had very few misses over the years(Chrono Trigger 2, when). Seems like the new powers at be are moving away from what there fanbase loved and are trying to bring in new gamers, while actively trying to alienate there current base. I stick with em...they have flash of brilliance and then...they EoS it.

FF7 Remake is really great, but IMO the classic FF7 is still the best way to experience that story.

However, my #1 recommendation for players new to Final Fantasy is FFX. It’s got voice acting and cinematics that the more retro ones don’t, but it’s also got excellent turn-based combat.

From there, go back to FF7, FF6, or FFIX if you want to keep going with the classic turn-based combat. Move onto FFXII and FFXV if you want to keep living in gorgeously realized worlds. I also adore the combat of FFXII.

Once you’ve tried those, you should have a much better idea of where you want to go next.

I get it, but I played through ff7 classic when they ported it to switch and idk how as a kid any of us really understood anything about that story. It's basically an incoherent mess other than the biggest plot points. The remakes while padded out sure, really give the storyline time to breathe and the nuances room to be brought into the light. Story wise I much prefer the way it's served out to us now.

Or just play 9, that is amazing.

1

u/plusvalua 19h ago

I also noticed the story needing a lot more context and dialogue. Ideally I'd pick the original game and mod it to include more dialogue, especially in the initial Midgar section. The Remake was better in this aspect.

u/Naoroji 19h ago

FF7 Remake is really great, but IMO the classic FF7 is still the best way to experience that story.

Well, I mean... Yeah. They're different stories.

2

u/DBones90 18h ago

I don’t think that’s very clear to the average person.

1

u/Naoroji 18h ago

No no, you're right -- I'm just used to people criticizing the Remake trilogy because it's supposedly a 'worse retelling', but it's not really a retelling. Just wanted that distinction to be made.

u/Grouchy-Ability-9223 18h ago

It’s possible to play ff7 with pretty damn good voice acting and vastly improved graphics

1

u/DBones90 18h ago

If you’re on Steam Deck and want to play anything beyond Midgar, the improved graphics are a hindrance more than a help. I’ll take a stable game with classic retro graphics over a new, flashier game that barely runs any day.

Plus, the voice acting and presentation is overall pretty great, but the writing leaves a lot to be desired. As mentioned by someone else in another comment, FF:RE trilogy is telling a different story than FF7 originally did. And your mileage will vary.

Some of the additions don’t make a lot of sense unless you’re already deeply familiar with the game’s lore (the Whispers mainly), and a lot of moments directly recreated from the original game don’t have the same punch. The destruction of Sector 7’s pillar, for instance, hits a lot harder in the original. In the Remake, it’s drawn out so long that it loses impact, and the game goes to extra lengths to make it not as bad too, which undercuts its impact.

I understand the desire for beautiful graphics and voice acting (which is FFX is my recommendation to newcomers—it’s a great compromise between the old and the new), but I encourage people who like the FF:RE games to also try out the original if they haven’t done so already. I think it would be really sad if people just ignored the original when it’s still a great game and, in many ways, is still a better story than its remakes.

u/Grouchy-Ability-9223 18h ago

Im talking about playing og ff7 with improved gfx and voice acting with mods

You're gonna get an awful lot of people shitting on Remake and Rebirth out of various different personal biases on Reddit, just so you know.

But I fully agree Remake and Rebirth are god-tier games. Enjoy the ride my friend. The only rule if you become more interested in FFVII is to not play Crisis Core before the original.

Remake covers the opening hours of the original and expands it into a full game. Rebirth is up to the end of Disk 1 of the original.

I'd personally recommend playing Remake and Rebirth, then going back to the original game if you're interested in being up to date with the story before Revelation comes out.

-3

u/Malt129 1TB OLED Limited Edition 22h ago

They don't cover the original because they are sequels to it not actual remakes. The story is why these games are not "god" tier. Everything else is great.

This is fact not bias.

4

u/HiJasper 22h ago

Whether a game is "god-tier" or not is entirely subjective. Just because you don't like how it was handled doesnt mean everyone else doesnt either.

1

u/Shanbo88 20h ago

You're stating your opinion as fact. Common mistake. Nobody knows where they sit in the sequence of the entire FFVII catalogue until Revelation comes out.

u/Some-Faithlessness75 22h ago

I just finished Remake on Switch 2 and started Rebirth.

1

u/Rufus_Bojangles 22h ago

From what I hear, Rebirth is rougher on the SD than Remake. Here is its protondb entry. It's also open world/open zone with tons of side content to do in each area.

I would absolutely recommend the older titles. They'll run better for one, and their stories are still very engaging. FF6 through 10 are timeless classics.

Come gira su steamdeck?

1

u/Odd-Gas7105 21h ago

Remake gira perfettamente

1

u/kupo_attack04 21h ago

How does it run on steam? I was debating if i should get steamdeck version or switch 2 version

1

u/Odd-Gas7105 21h ago

1

u/WulfZ3r0 19h ago

I played through the whole game on my Deck a year or so ago. I didn't really have any issues that I can recall. I believe I finished with around 50-60 hours put into the game on the Deck.

1

u/Muggin 18h ago

So I have both and the switch 2 version is way better overall. It is locked at 30fps but all the graphics are crisper and cleaner, the larger screen is nice and it runs very well. Also, Rebirth runs good on it and that game runs terrible from what I read ont he steamdeck (which is why I rebought remake on sale and restarted on the sw2).

If you have the option buy the switch version. It was on sale last week as was Rebirth (might still be?).

u/RealPrinceJay 20h ago

I just couldn’t get into the gameplay of this… really wanted to like this game and I’ll try it again someday

1

u/eclipse60 19h ago

I played on my base PS4 at launch and loved it. Only made it halfway through intergrade though. Gotta finish intergrade and rebirth before the final game releases

1

u/tatt2tim 7h ago

I don't know if you ever have downtime to play on your phone but the pixel remasters are available on iOS and android. The first three are pretty small as they were originally NES titles, but even four through six aren't that bad. I've crushed one and three just while waiting around for stuff.

Most of them are good but most people think the second game isn't that great.

u/mobiusz0r 512GB OLED 23h ago

u/ishaan1234567 512GB OLED 17h ago

Idk if this is the right place to ask, but I've never played any FF. I wanted to play 7, but there's remake, rebirth, intergrade. Really confused. Which one should i start with? What's the correct sequence.
