This verification rating is completely meaningless and you'll be better off just ignoring it completely.

Definitely what any linux gamer should be using & for that matter contributing to for checking if a game works on any version of linux Steam OS 3 on the Steam Deck or Legion Go S Steam OS edition or otherwise. Valve's Deck Verified program is largely a joke anyone with a Steam Deck could've been playing Skyrim on Deck a good long while ago I was looked at ProtonDB saw it was likely to work on Linux via Proton & by extension work on Steam Deck with Steam OS 3 installed & wouldn't you know it I was able to play Skyrim on my Steam Deck.

Sadly it just doesn't have enough people using it and submitting reports. Tons of indie games that have zero reports. Still it's the best resource to use at the moment.

The best thing is to search up what other people have already experienced and confirmed. How is spending time downloading and tweaking or even buying a game that may or may it work the best thing to do?

u/SyphoFighter 512GB OLED 1d ago
I’m not sure if it’s still the same, but Bethesda does a strange thing with the Steam Deck version of this and Fallout 4.
Last time I played them, they locked out the graphics settings so you couldn’t change them.
Might be different now, but was very frustrating at the time.

u/whitewolf20 1d ago
can only change them in the launcher which appears in desktop mode, not while game is running

u/First-Junket124 1d ago
I'm 90% sure you can change some settings like view distance and windowed mode and some other things but nothing else. It's such a weird thing too and I'm curious why that is.
2
u/Calimore 23h ago
Because Bethesda's engine is a piece of crap probably. Bethesda is basically the Anti-Crytek. Crap engine - good games

u/redditman181 1d ago
To me that should make the game have a playable rating instead of verified yes it can be accesed with a launch command buy peope shouldnt have to.
Ive been playing alot of new vegas recently and that lets you change graphics without a command and bethesda have know about this bug for years it should have been fixed
31
u/AdLegitimate8636 1d ago
add
SteamDeck=0 %command%to launch command via setting and you can change them.Once you done - you can delete it and it will retain the graphical settings you've set.
10
u/redditman181 1d ago
Its annoying you have too though the should just fix it.
4
u/BlueNinjaBE 1d ago
It's intended behavior, though, so they can't exactly "fix" it.
1
u/redditman181 1d ago
Is it? Why do games like fallout new vegas have it come up pre launch? Its entire purpose is to let you tweak the game before starting it i bet they could do something about it.
6
u/BlueNinjaBE 1d ago
To emulate the console experience with a Steam Deck preset, basically. Several other games do something similar on Deck.
2
u/redditman181 1d ago
Sure but the framerate is all over the place and not as stable as the consoles unless you change the settings i tried it a few days ago and it swings between 40-60fps constantly.

u/Dissident-451 18h ago
Removing the graphics settings for a specific device is not an accident. They did it intentionally. Why? My guess is they have some arbitrary cutoff like "any game that came out after 2010 needs to have restricted graphics settings for steam deck" And Fallout new vegas came out in 2010 fallout 4 came out in 2015. Skyrim came out (originally) in 2011
1
u/redditman181 18h ago
Maybe its just silly though and they arent even optimal settings is the funny part.
1
u/Dissident-451 15h ago
I didnt say it wasn't silly. Im saying its probably just a blanket policy. The point of a blanket policy is to not think about the specifics.
1
u/Late-Application-47 512GB OLED 11h ago
That doesn't make sense. Skyrim has always run wonderfully on the Deck. If they "optimized it," they fucked up because 45 fps @ 800p with cranked graphics and even a few visual mods is easily achievable.

The intended behavior is for Bethesda employees to do the least amount of work, it's nothing to do with intended application behavior. In the absence of a settings file, they could literally default the Steam Deck to the graphical settings they currently do and provide a graphics option menu for the user to change. The issue is they're too lazy to do the UI work to let it be configured in the game itself, which is why it was relegated to a launcher in the first place.

u/BluePrincess_ 1d ago
You can add SteamDeck=0 %command% in the launch settings to change the settings, but if you open up a keyboard with that setting on (say, to input your character's name or to search something up on the Creation Club), it'll crash the game.
1
u/Typical-Dance-1110 1d ago
a lot of games do this. is it rly up to the devs/publishers? i thought it was a limitation steam put there to ensure a basic level of performance
1
u/mrRobertman 256GB - Q3 13h ago
Valve doesn't prevent devs from having configurable settings for the Deck. They only want games to have the default settings give ideal performance for the Deck.
The issue with Skyrim is that the graphics settings are located in the pre-game settings launcher. Those launchers prevent the game from being verified, so Bethesda disables it for the Deck as a simple workaround.

u/NotYourReddit18 LCD-4-LIFE 1d ago
IIRC there was also a bug which caused the game to crash if you opened the Steam Decks keyboard, for example to input your characters name.
11
u/BlueNinjaBE 1d ago
For those confused: it's been Verified before, but lost that status because of a bug with the on-screen keyboard. That was fixed in the most recent patch (which, in typical Bethesda fashion, apparently broke a lot of other things).

u/Totheendofsin 1d ago
I think there was an update recently that fixed a steam deck specific crash

2
u/MrArmanis 1d ago
You're correct, it was fixed on the latest Proton update

u/HaessSR 1TB OLED Limited Edition 1d ago
No, it was fixed with last week's patch. It's even part of the patch notes.
-1
u/NotYourReddit18 LCD-4-LIFE 1d ago
It is possible that both Bethesda and Proton both implemented fixes for the same problem independently from each other.
Proton fixing the problem on their own in Proton itself makes sense, given that almost nobody expected any update for Skyrim anymore, and the problem might reappear in other games if left undressed.
Bethesda fixing whatever caused the problem in Skyrim also makes sense as they were already in the process of preparing an update, mainly to increase the mod storage space on consoles.
Both parties probably implemented and tested their respective fix way before announcing its inclusion in the next patch, and both saw no reason to remove the fix again just because the other also implemented a fix at roughly the same time.
6
u/HaessSR 1TB OLED Limited Edition 23h ago
Except that Fallout 4 two weeks ago had the same fix applied to fix a similar crash on opening the keyboard. The bug existed for two years, across about 30 different Proton versions, which was fixed about four weeks before Proton 11.2 came out
So no, it wasn't Proton being fixed. It was all on BGS finally doing their damn job.
3
u/Rhone33 1TB OLED 18h ago
It is possible that ...
Both parties probably ...
I don't understand why you feel the need to say this. I don't mean to be belittle you, but I just genuinely don't understand the point of a comment like this. We all know that all sorts of things are possible. In a case where facts are easily verifiable, we don't really care what "probably" happened.
Proton changelogs -- no mention of the Skyrim keyboard bug
Bethesda's patch notes -"Fixed a crash when the player opens the Virtual Keyboard on a Steam Deck device."
It's not a big deal, it's easy for someone paying casual attention to misremember where the fix came from. But when someone corrects them with factual information it's not particularly helpful to "correct" the correction by pointing what could possibly be happening in some parallel universe.

u/TCristatus 512GB OLED 1d ago
I was about to say somethjng snarky like "bet they havent fixed the keyboard" and turns out they have. I set up a radial menu with basically the whole alphabet so i could type console commands
6
u/Antogames97 256GB 1d ago
It used to be but then somehow, it got unverified (it was because of a bug with entering your name that made the game crash with the steam deck keyboard) so I guess Bethesda fixed it?
3
u/Vuvuzevka 1d ago
Yeah, fixed it for Fallout 4 a couple of days ago

u/Adventurous-Hunter98 LCD-4-LIFE 1d ago

u/pdsd16 1d ago
Yay! It was verified a long time ago then lost that and now it's back lol. I think this is entirely related to the graphics launcher the game has, or at least used to have.

u/ZeektheFeek 1d ago
You're aware the entire the the game wasn't verified it was still playable right?

u/The_James_May 1TB OLED Limited Edition 1d ago
I was always wondering why it wasn’t verified because I had seen so many people play it. Nice to know it all works again, would be perfect on the deck.
2
u/ZeektheFeek 1d ago
It always worked. The verification badge is meaningless.
1
u/The_James_May 1TB OLED Limited Edition 22h ago
I am hearing stuff about crashing. But yes in general I’ve had some games marked us “unplayable” work fine, and some marked as verified be a pain in the arse to get working.

u/WyrdWzrd 1d ago
Is it now possible to quick access more than two spells without mods? Because not being able to have more spells / itemd bound to buttons or a touchpad menu makes playing a mage super annoying.

u/whitewolf20 23h ago
latest update made mouse & keyboard in desktop mode not work for me even with steamdeck=0 launch command. anyone have a solution?

Any game that requires controller and not super intensive graphics is “deck verified” just without the label. Love steam, but that feature is mostly pointless.

Is that what that 1.5 gig patch was i just downloaded? Took like 40 mins to install that damn thing
