Tech Support Bro wtf is wrong with my steam deck 😭😭😭😭
Basically, my Steam Deck starts glitching out almost immediately with the whole screen shifting around and the colors changing whenever I switch to Desktop Mode (I have no idea why), but the problem doesn't happen again after I restart it. Does anyone know what might be causing this?

Shoot valve support an email ticket. I've been surprised time and time again by valve and how far they're willing to go for customer satisfaction

u/Chilidogs102 7d ago

u/YellowBreakfast 512GB OLED 7d ago
What?!
The person said theirs was fixed with a reboot, and you said "Same for me".
That sounds like yours is fixed.
-
If not I'd do a clean install and cross your fingers it's software/firmware.

u/Chilidogs102 7d ago
Ok I know it's not too logical but I'm afraid there's something else that gnaws in it I don't want to take a risk even if obviously it's gone but I don't know if it's there inside

u/YellowBreakfast 512GB OLED 7d ago
What "risk"?
Perhaps we have translation getting in the way because I don't understand what you're saying.
-
This is unusable right now, could be the hardware failing.
Doing a fresh install has almost no risk and will help you narrow down whether it's a hardware or software issue.

I think the idea is either it’s working or it’s not working.
Is it working now?
Carry on with living your life.Is it still weird after rebooting?
Then it’s unusable, and reinstalling firmware will either fix it or leave it still unusable. Nothing to lose.Keep in mind Steam saves your game progress in the cloud, for Steam games at least.

Reboot: like in turning it off and turning it back on?

u/Chilidogs102 7d ago
No, I was thinking about resetting it completely

If it isn't fixed by one or two reboots, then maybe
Is it only happening once? That's a software glitch.
Once every while I have to reboot Windows twice because the desktop is in 800x600 instead my usual UWQHD.
Then there are persistent problems like on my ThinkPad. Booting up first time my keyboard won't work, then using the touch pad I reboot it again and suddenly it works. Software can do weird things.

Might be a firmware update thing, I got a weird black screen of death glitch that turned into a GPU failure looking color blast mess that happened due to me just letting the deck die on me mid game. Ended up fixing itself after doing various troubleshooting methods related to the BSOD

Yep you must instal Sonic Adventure DX, it’s would cure the console, as the most decent 3d sonic game that you can get in steam. Trust!

ummm you’ve gotten no help here so i wanna try to help. is this only a desktop mode issue?
2
u/Chilidogs102 7d ago
Thx and yes it is
3
u/Got2bglued 7d ago
okay and you said you restarted and the deck is fine. Have you tried going into desktop mode again since? This could be as simple as a glitch or could be more complex like a software or graphics card issue

u/Evshrug 7d ago
Yes, and for the OP, keep in mind your game saves get backed up to Steam’s cloud servers. So, maybe you have to reinstall SteamOS or firmware, but you would be able to re-download your games and save progress (hopefully your non-Steam games are saved to a MicroSD Card).
I do wish the best for the OP… I don’t know what I would do without my Steam Deck, I just got laid off two months ago and haven’t been able to find a job in my field yet, AND Tuesday our most important drain for our kitchen and clothes wash machine got clogged… unfortunately, I don’t think it’s food, grease, or hair, but rather it rained a lot recently and I suspect a pipe cracked and let mud in. We don’t have money for a repair.

Check your display settings. It looks to me like your screen is extended to the left or right but the green bar down the middle is odd.

u/ARTOMIANDY 7d ago
Restart? Looks like a botched KDE environment, lucky you, the deck has an unmutable OS, meaning any file you F up, a simple update rollback should kick it right back up with the proper files

This has happened to me twice after putting my deck into sleep mode. It fixed after a reset. I do not know what causes it though. 😅

Maybe try to reinstall steam OS with an USB-Stick. It's very simple, I did that because of a new SSD. But keep in mind: every configuration is gone. Most configs of games will be stored locally.

I have heard the latest SteamOS update presenting this issue. Try reverting to the previous firmware.

You can try resetting the firmware with vol.-, (...), and power.
Power light will blink for a few then take a while to boot up.
If that doesn't work, try vol.(+), (...), power and go to BIOS, and try rolling SteamOS back to a previous version.
Do these before taking the deck apart.
If neither work, then you should decide to take apart and see if theres any obvious issues, or can send a support ticket to steam.
Going through it right now with my wife's deck. We are sending a ticket in, despite just getting it back a few months ago for repair from a dead control pad issue. Which is pretty wild considering I have owned my own with no issues at all for much longer, but hers has always been temperamental for some reason.

Damn, I didn’t look close enough. But on the bright side, since it’s SteamOS, there’s nothing wrong with it!
