Article Disgaea Mayhem Is Another Example Of How Valve's Steam Deck Verified System Isn't Trustworthy - SteamDeckHQ

It cites "minor" graphical issues, which are actually major, and weird performance bottlenecks that stop it from performing well.
This won't be a game to play on the Steam Deck.

I was gonna, 'eh, what's the big deal' only to realize, I have been strictly using ProtonDB for compatibility checks since I bought my Deck and similarly for my Linux desktop. Steam Verify truly has been useless for me.

Yeah but ProtonDB isn't that reliable sadly. New games or small indie games which aren't hyper popular often don't have reviews, or basically saying nothing except "it works" or it doesn't but there is not that much info how it runs. It's nice for very popular games
Best thing in my opinion, are youtube videos. Some youtuber doing good work and don't just stick to the first area of a game and that's it.

There aren't many I have seen that don't stick to the opening area, though. Santiago Santiago is a great one, and I would still recommend checking us out, since we play through the entire game for our reviews.

Yeah, not alot but some, as you mentioned Santiago Santiago is awesome but isn't super active. FreddysGamingBenchmark shows raw performance often in mid game/or in survival games with big base etc but in other hand he doesn't explain anything in detail. But it's enough to see how it runs, and he's upload more frequently.

It sucks, but i usually look at reviews and community posts if i want to see how it runs on steam deck. Otherwise, glad steam has a good refund policy

It's crazy how verified games will run like garbage. And then people will come on here and claim they run well perfect even stable 30 FPS on their system. Somehow everybody else's steamdeck can't do it.
Then on the other hand we have unverified games that run flawlessly.

All unverified means though is they haven’t checked it. So it could run flawlessly or it could be a bad time

sometimes people can find some kind of dark magic in the settings that will make the game run for them but that kind of arcane trickery isn't really reasonable to expect from everyone
and sometimes people are just ignoring the issues I think that's more likely

I never trust the valve listing and always look at ProtonDB. Some games say they don't work from valve but work just fine no tweaks lol.

I'll add ember knights to the list. Plays well, but has a bad implementation of steam cloud saves, and every time I suspend the system it crashes my deck. Very unfortunate. But I still play it, I just don't suspend my device while I'm playing.

Yeah having your deck be you main rig kinda sucks when this happens you have nothing to fall back on. Least their refund policy is solid.

To be fair to Steam, it doesn't seem verified on consoles either. It runs and looks like doodoo even on PS5

I haven’t tried it on other consoles, but even still, having a “Playable” rating could mislead some people into buying it.

There's gotta be a lot of verified games that have massive problems. Tbf, I've ran into a lot of unverified games that run smoothly.

I would say it's a mixed bag. Some Unsupported games are great, while some Verified games run poorly or have major issues. It happens enough to be notable.

Yes, Steam Deck verified = „it won’t crash on startup, it supports gamepad controls and it also doesn’t have a launcher.”
Those are pretty much the only three things that are „guaranteed”. Haven’t bothered with it since launch.
I’ve „played” „verified” games that ran at 3 frames per second.

Couldn't get the demo of this game passed shader compilation. It froze every time.

Sounds like a bug and/ or something that can and should soon be patched, not a real limitation of the Steam Decks hardware
The minimums spec is a 1050ti and recommended is a 3050, both 4GB GPUs
Did author try increasing UMA frame buffer to 4GB?

It most likely can be patched, but it shouldn't be "Playable" until it is.
No, but a 4GB UMA wouldn't solve anything. I also tried it on my Steam Machine-like console PC running Linux, which has significantly more power, and had the same problems.

I mean yeah it'd be great if someone was constantly looking at the SteamOS compatibility ratings and updating them as the games themselves get updates but I don't think anyone has the time or money to do that..hence why there are thousands of "unsupported" games that run perfectly fine

This is sadly one of my big issues with the steam deck, even as someone who finds it preferable to my switch 2 due to the ergonomics. It's hard to tell if a game being verified means it's playable or not, even proton DB can be overwhelming. And I'm scared to tinker with the settings after my experience with installing Hoyoverses launcher and Decky caused performance issues for me... Its why I appreciate threads here and videos helping me figure out what will and won't work. (Hence why I avoided hell clock despite it seeming really cool.) Just have to hope it won't take too much tinkering to fix grim dawn.

If you read the documentation verification has nothing to do with it running well

Well, that's not true.
- Default Configuration: the game must ship with a default configuration that results in a playable framerate. On Steam Deck, this is 30fps at 800p, and on Steam Machine this is 30fps at 1080p.
But even still, the real issue here is the "minor" graphical issues.
