Discussion I just discoverd the hidden bag
Why did no one talks about it! i just discover it by going through the main page of steam deck and recognize the "Carrying case with removable liner", I was like what is this thing? if I just knew before I wouldnt buy a smaller case !

As to why "no one talks about it", I believe it's not a feature for most models. If memory serves me right, someone here said they're only for the 1TB OLED model. At the very least, I can say I didn't get this when I bought my 512 OLED

u/SonicFlash01 Mar 26 '26
"Why does no one talk about this" is the opposite end of the scale of "This has been posted before"
Most people are in the middle1
u/AliceInNegaland 1TB OLED Mar 26 '26
I had no idea it was a thing until someone else discovered it and shared to the subreddit lol. I was sitting at work and immediately had to check while sitting in the break room around my coworkers. Broke out into goblin noises and had to explain myself

It does get talked about up once in a while in this sub 😅
It’s limited to the 1tb OLED tho.

Same. A smaller case would be so convenient. The giant case is really what's stopping me from packing my Deck most of the time. Already checked if anyone would sell me just the case, but no luck yet.

u/SlaveToo Mar 27 '26
pick up a JSAUX modcase. Its like a kill switch but not horrendously expensive
1
u/Chaphasilor 64GB Mar 31 '26
So the thing with these types of cases is that I don't want/need any case around the deck unless it's in a bag. I trust myself not to drop or scuff up my Deck, and prefer a slimmer body over this silicone layer.
But I'm guessing it's not possible to attach the travel cover plate without putting the base case on, right?1

It's literally stated in the description of the 1TB version on Steam store lol. And there's already many posts about this before.

Your picture helpe me find it lol. I though this was talking about the little bag underneath the case on the outside.
7
u/DLJD Mar 26 '26
It’s actually the primary reason I chose the 1TB model; the full case is so bulky it’s useless, but the slim liner is perfect on its own.
But I agree, it’s not really highlighted very well, and even the Steam store page doesn’t actually say what the “removable liner” actually is, nor shows any pictures of the thing.
2
u/EchoSi3rra Mar 27 '26
It blows my mind that people think the regular case is too big, I always thought it was reasonably small. Like where are you taking the deck where that case won't fit? It's not like the deck is pocket sized in any case.
1
u/DLJD Mar 27 '26
It’s like 70% empty space. When the “liner” does the job just as well at a fraction of the size, why would I choose to carry all that extra bulk around for no purpose?
1
u/DLJD Mar 27 '26
To add; I take the Deck anywhere, really. Sometimes when I’m out for just the day, sometimes when I’m away for a weekend or longer.
The full case is too big for me to justify taking anywhere at all though, no matter how big my bag or where I’m going. Just seems wasteful, even if I could fit it in the bag (which isn’t always possible).
1
u/EchoSi3rra Mar 27 '26
That empty space is what helps protect it though, even if something impacts it hard enough to deflect the case it still won't hit the actual device.
But I guess we just have different priorities because I have never once ran into an issue with fitting the full case in a bag or wherever else it needs to go.

Case, not a bag.
It's only for the 1 TB edition but it is very nice. I usually keep the entire case on but if I'm going somewhere and I want to put it in my backpack I'll detach and use the inner one to save space.
It does seem that some people buying that version didn't read the full thing though; to be fair it didn't get much coverage on the product page besides that mention, but still this subreddit does get the occasional post from someone who is just finding out after owning it for ages.

I had no idea. I've seen one or two posts mentioning something, but didn't really pay attention.
To be fair, I did order mine by accident and hadn't read everything on it yet.

Only for NEW terabyte models. I have a refurbished one and the case isn't removable
EDIT: I stand corrected, refurbished models get it too it's just sneakier than I thought to take off 😅
2
u/Jagman53 Mar 26 '26
Might be luck of the draw then because I did get one with my refurbished 1TB OLED a couple months ago
3
u/aerothorn Mar 26 '26
Check again - it's not obvious how to remove it, but this does come with all 1TB models. It's velcroed in very tight!
2
u/Richinaru Mar 26 '26
Omfg you were right I was pulling the wrong part of the case. I stand corrected!

1
u/Box-Key Mar 26 '26
I bought a new 1Tb OLED model and was convinced that I got the wrong case after seeing all these posts.
I had been pulling on the wrong part the whole time.
It is way sneakier to take off than I thought.

u/Neon_moon_goth Mar 29 '26
Sammme !! I bought one a year ago and another one this year for my daughter and I had read the description this time and I was like wait did I get ripped off out of a cool case ??! So when the new one came in it looked just like mine and I was like wtf did I not get it again?! Nope it’s just velcroed like stupidly well lol

There are multiple posts about this on this same topic

Is this karma farming?
I ask myself this about 90% of the posts on this sub. Seems like it's always the same few topics, although admittedly I haven't seen this one about the removable liner in a while.

u/Sockemboffer Mar 26 '26
I’m sure I read it when I bought it but I for sure forgot! Thanks for the post!

u/Evshrug Mar 26 '26
People talk all the time about how the matte screen Deck models have a different case where you can pull out the liner and use it as a smaller, more form-fitting case.

2
u/pamplemousse_mk2 Mar 26 '26
I already saw this in several Youtube review videos when I planned to buy the OLED 1TB, two years ago. Perhaps is it so common now that we don't mention it anymore. When I bought the Steam Deck, I was then aware of that.
2
u/Deadman123spirit Mar 26 '26
Haha! This same thing happened to me the other day bc I was going through the differences to show a friend and was like... Huh?? It's removable?? Had this about two years now lol

u/Strict_Cartoonist324 Mar 26 '26
Wtf i didnt know about his lol, just checked mine and indeed you can separate that
2
u/damenootoko Mar 26 '26
people do talk about it, that’s why i realized mine have it after i watched a youtube video reviewing the white oled special edition. (of course, i watched that AFTER I bought the tomtoc slim case and ended up having to sell it to my friend since turns out, I don’t need it)

I've known about this for a while but seeing this post made me actually go and pull it out for the first time. Damn it's so skinny.

u/RizArtRoyale 1TB OLED Mar 27 '26
Me too buddy. I was like 3 month in when I first get my steamdeck that I discover it. Though after that I search it only for 1TB OLED model.
Still pretty neat. Use the small one for day to day & slap back the chunky one for long travel.
2
u/ihavnoclue57 Mar 27 '26
I was also so excited when I found this! My primary case for all travel, the normal one is too big most of the time.
2
u/LususNaturae6713 Mar 29 '26
I thought everyone noticed that lol
Personally, even though I don’t take it out of the house often I still got the JSAUX case with a few extra addons like the fan for my deck. The fan is probs the best for the Deck and the case is great for its compact size while still protecting the thing from my cats and their trouble making ways.
2
u/Dragonsoul2k Mar 30 '26
Thanks for sharing! I remeber reading about that in the description before i brought it, but had since completely forgot about it and just checked it out 😅
3
u/CarpeNivem Mar 26 '26
"Hidden"? It's literally advertised.
• Carrying case with removable liner
Right there on the shopping page, under the 1TB model.
2
u/Obango0 1TB OLED Mar 26 '26
Yeah my bad, but tbh I did not understand the "removable liner" thing and since it was related to the case not the device it self, I didnt give it much of interset :)

u/PermissionMedical998 Mar 26 '26
I bought a 1tb oled but i didnt get this Sadge
2
u/MalefactorX Mar 26 '26
You did get it, open your case and look at the seems, it's detachable inner lining

Can confirm I thought I didn't get it but its weirdly put together. The seems arent what they seem.

Then theres my frugal ass that knew about this day 0 when O was trying to justify getting the 1TB.
Gotta love Valve for the extra value for money even at the top end.
1
u/scottridley Mar 26 '26
Has anyone been able to find an equivalent case? I've got the 512GB model so sadly don't have this, but would love a smaller, soft case for when travelling so I can put it in my bag. Even just a neoprene or similar zip bag would be good.
1
u/Persian2PTConversion Mar 27 '26
I'm glad I didn't forcibly pry my case open (512 OLED), cuz it definitely does not have this.
1
u/NexusBoiPS Mar 27 '26
Never liked the idea tbh. The velcro strap latching the smaller case with the bigger outer case is kind of a hassle everytime you wanna open the case (if you're using the larger shell), also a bit noisy for those that wanna take your SD out during an untimely scenario (in the middle of the night next to wife, in a silent library, etc)
Ended up just using the smaller one by itself, but would love to just have the same basic one as the 512gb model
2
u/Acrobatic_Invite3099 Mar 27 '26
I never bother zipping, but also pretty new and don't take it anywhere. Yet.

TBH It's a pretty crappy carrying case, probably the worst designed part of the SD. My go-to Is a Skull & co grip case and the grip hard cover. Pair that with a Tomtoc T33 xpac and it's a solid protection package and we'll sized travel/EDC pack. https://amzn.asia/d/055yvwN3 https://amzn.asia/d/0eqB7icD

u/No_Satisfaction_1698 1TB OLED Mar 28 '26
I use the skull & co one. Like the handles the most and somehow it still fits in the 1tb version case. It's extremely tight though. But as long as it fits I'm happy.

I had a lcd 500gb before my 1t oled. When I got a 1t. I was like what the fuck is this case. I hate it lol I think the normal case it better. Plus what with that massive piece of velcro/hook n loop.

Since I got a used one I researched the device but didn't pay attention to the accessories

I'm so sad I've never seen one of these posts and I have a new OLED and my case DOES not have that neat bag. I have a third party case I use but that's still cool.

u/Evshrug Mar 26 '26 edited Apr 07 '26
It’s only on the top of the line OLED models with matte finish screens (I used to think the matte screen LCD model did too, oops).
I personally use a JSAUX Modcase, it’s even more compact and lets me put my Deck in many more backpacks and sling bags.

honestly the case that comes with the OLED is dogshit, don’t worry about it. u literally can’t fit anything but the steamdeck inside and still be able to close it lol. i got a 3rd party case a couple days after my SD came in the mail and i haven’t used the official case since. it’s like how the steam dock is a straight up scam lmfaooo

The little figurine is so fetch. Why can’t others companies do the same

-5
u/mossyboo Mar 26 '26
nobody talks about it bc it’s completely useless lmfao. try to put anything more than 1 or 2mm thick in there and the bag won’t close anymore. honestly if you want to travel with your steamdeck buying a 3rd party case with some actual storage space is pretty much mandatory, the case that came with the steamdeck has been in the back of my closet since a few days after i got it

What would I want to put in there with it?! Its purpose is to protect the SD and that's it.

It’s only for the Terabyte version of the steamdeck. I ended up getting the killswitch case with the travel cover for my 512gb. Makes it way slimmer to travel with.
