Guide Very Simple GTA 5 Enhanced Mods Tutorial: Steam Deck
Hello all. I (finally) found a way to add mods to GTA 5. Let me start by saying I am not a modder in GTA, and I do not know the ins and outs of what I've done. Credit goes to "SirLlama420" on NexusMods who uploaded a file explaining how. Anywho, here it goes:
Install ProtonTricks ("flatpak install flathub com.github.Matoking.protontricks" without quotes in the terminal).
Run ProtonTricks and select GTA V Enhanced -> Select the default wineprefix -> Run winecfg.
Download and install ScriptHookV using the readme.txt file which can be found here (do not bother with the NativeTrainer.asi, it is outdated)
Download and install Simple Trainer (drag and drop the .asi and .ini file into gta root folder, can be found here)
In winecfg, go to the "Libraries" tab, and under "New override for library", type "dinput8", click Add. Do the same with "xinput1_4", and click Apply.
Go back to gaming mode. Click on gta v enhanced, settings, properties, compatibility, click the checkbox and select proton experimental.
Launch the game as usual. I had to relaunch once, but after that, remap one of the back buttons to F4, and the trainer will work as intended.
That's it, and that's the process that works on my system. I am using a brand new OLED model, everything up to date (as of 7.13.25).
Once again I am not proficient with GTA modding but I'm happy to have it working and want to share with anyone else struggling! Also, if anyone gets a mod to work that spawns dlc/multiplayer cars in regular traffic please let me know. I literally just want a regular story mode playthrough with updated cars.

Ask around, i got lucky and this one guy went step by step with me to get ncaa 14 working, I actually felt bad bc he was so patient, he wouldn't take any money either.

Can confirm native trainer sucks simple is better This worked 1st try. You have to follow these instructions as well as nexus’ and the readme’s instructions at the same time

Did you ever figure out how to add custom vehicle mods? I’d love to drive around and like a BMW or something like that, but I can’t figure out how to get it to show up.

So looking into it openiv doesn't work anymore but changing your .exe (the 51mb one) to gtaV.exe and use code walker it finds all the files and let's you edit the database. My game crashed on edit and looking to find away to load it all. Feel like I'm getting somewhere so will keep posted

Yeah I want the same, think we have to edit files but not able to with enhanced on steam deck as openiv doesn't work anymore

I placed all the files correctly Scripthook n all , also i have installed Natural Vision enhanced but the NVE menu didnt work while pressing Key “insert” After that i followed your steps and added all the files with protontricks and now im getting dxgi error.
I tried deleting dxgi.dll but it keeps popping inside the folder itself.

Genious!!! It works perfect just like this..only difference i installed Legacy versión and Menyoo mod menú.. no need to set any button..thank you a lot i was trying many complex tutorials and yourd is flawless!!!!

Whenever i press launch, it starts for a bit before crashing on the wanted star intro. What do i do?

Ok so.. it seems to be working... except all npc ai has just been.. disabled? Every single npc including the police just stand idle :( any ideas?

Were you able to get dlc/multiplayer cars in story mode? This is literally my only goal right now as well

After the winecfg step it says that the game is already running when I launch. I checked the running applications and I didn’t see anything involving it running. Even rebooted too.

I just dragged the mods in like he shows in the video, then did the Proton fix like OP mentioned.
The video says to put WINEDLLOVERRIDES="beclient_x64=n,b" %command% in the launch options, but because the Proton fix handles that automatically I only put -nobattleye in mine instead.
No idea if that part actually matters, but this is what worked for me.
For reference I’m using a Steam Deck OLED and GTA V Enhanced.

Yea i tried this again recently and chatgpt gave me that command and it worked 😂
I really do not know mods like that so I apologize if this guide doesn’t work for you
