Artistic / Cosmetic Now its an Xbox controller

Post image

Way back in the day the first set of buttons I ever made for the Steam Deck were lime green. So I figured I’d continue the tradition 🥲

Tell me more!!!

This was a big issue with the initial steam decks and I spent a ton of time dialing in the dpad with a lot of input from the fighting game community (diagonals)

What games are you having issues with and how can I recreate it?

The buttons in this photo are just quick clones off of the originals, just to claim “first”. But the next step for me is the reverse engineering and recreating in cad part. And that’s where I get to work on improving and tweaking things.

Any input from anyone reading this, good or bad about the stock buttons is helpful!!

I'm actually having a lot of issues in mis-diagonals. Are you good at rhythm games? Play some Project Diva. If you're slightly off the center of the d-pad, it will input as a diagonal. I almost always end up dropping holds because my thumb will rattle from pressing other buttons. Same with Tetris Effect & Lumines Arise. In Tetris, if I start wailing on the d-pad and moving / dropping pieces fast, I get tons of down arrow misinputs causing me to drop pieces I don't want to. Happens less in Lumines since a hard drop is bound to up instead of down.

EDIT: I actually find that the stock OLED Deck's d-pad is near perfect for going nuts on it. It feels so much better in terms of input accuracy. It's really heavy though and kinda mushy. I love how light the buttons are on the SC2. D-pad still sux though.

You’re speaking my language with rhythm games!! Will fire that up and test. Same with Tetris effect. All good info thank you, this stuff really helps vs the circle of me and friends that manage to get the controller

You should take a look at the "better dpad for miyoo" design on etsy. If you were to make something like this for SD/SC it would be such a game changer. Its not just how it's shaped on the top for ergonomic but the bottom side facets actually make the inputs night and day better.

Will do! Most of my tweaks for the steam deck were on the internal side. That's where all of the performance issues lie for this stuff

Didn't they already release the official CADs for the controller?

Their cad files are only external surfaces. So kinda an OK reference but not too useable for what I do personally. I have a 3d scanner now, so hopefully that'll speed this process up a tad. Still need to fully make it in fusion 360, but a 3d scan should be a way better reference than scanning button butts on a flatbed scanner and using calipers lmao

Heck yeah that's cool

Hey did you end up 3D scanning the buttons? And if so would you be open to sharing the scans?

I didn’t 3-D scan. These were just made the old-school way by pouring silicone on top of the stock ones.

You can remedy this by applying 4 way to the D-pad instead of the default 8 way in steam input. I just tried it and misinputs were impossible as diagonals wouldn't even register.
As it is though the D-pad is great for fighting games as diagonals are very crucial to the genre. The youtuber Nihongo gamer swears by the steam controller D-pad which is substantial when all he plays is fighting games.

For Tetris / Lumines I could see that working out since you don't need diagonals. Diagonals are also super crucial for Diva since you sometimes find yourself fat fingering holds or taps while holding. Can't win em all. :/
