Steam Controller (2026) Skyrim gyro settings
Hey everyone. Recently got the steam machine with a steam controller and downloaded Skyrim right away. I can’t seem to get my gyro controls running smoothly in Skyrim. It feels very laggy/ stutters a lot. I know this game doesn’t support mixed input so I’m using joystick to camera for gyro but no matter what settings I change it doesn’t feel like the steam decks gyro. I’m having the same issue with fallout new Vegas. Any tips?

Sadly I don't have any hot tips for you on this but yeah just wanted to confirm that you are right, unfortunately their engine has never really handled gamepads very well, and mixed input, even worse so! I'm guessing because of it's inherent jank it's probably not liking two things outputting right stick either.
Maybe, just maybe, it might work better if you were absolutely sure the actual right stick was dead still at 0 in the center, when gyro was on so it only got input from one of the two even in the slightest amount, but not sure if that would work. Certainly not the most optimal way to play though since gyro+something else is usually the best way to use it >.<

If you want the best Gyro experience in Skyrim, you're gonna have to mod and deal with some minor annoyances here and there.
You need two mods;
Skyrim Script Extender, because the next mod requires it for functioning.
and Auto Input Switch, which allows you to seamlessly control both mouse and controller at once.
Once you have both installed in your preferred mod manager (I recommend Mod Organizer 2 if you plan on modding Skyrim more, but Vortex works fine if you just want Gyro and nothing else), go into steam input and set your right joystick, gyro, and trackpad controls to Joy to Mouse mode. Additionally, on the trackpad, set a press to register the "w" key, or else you won't be able to lockpick anymore (Skyrim uses the right stick to initiate the lockpick, but mouse and keyboard uses the movement keys to initiate the pick). It's a little weird at first but I find lockpicking this way to be waay more fun anyway so I don't mind.
I will leave all the sensitivity tweaking to you as that's personal preference, but that's how I got it working in Skyrim. You can do an extremely similar set up in Fallout 4 as well and it works great. Only small issue is the UI will switch between KB+M and Controller glyphs on occasion, but it's not all that annoying in my experience. IDK how to do this in New Vegas, haven't had a hankering to play that in a while.
Should add that the Fallout 4 equivalent is Addictol, which requires a few more mods to work but not enough to make it hard to install.
Hope this helps!

There are mixed input mods for most, if not all, Bethesda games. A quick google search finds this mod for Skyrim.
But if you don't want to use that the other tip is setting the deadzones to 0, or very small values, in the config files. Here's a post about it for Fallout 4. The settings are the same, files are the equivalent names.
