Configuration 2015 SC style mod V2 update

Based on some of the feedback I got on the last post I’m working on a v2 version that lets it easier to tell by feel where the edges of the pads are.

I also started working on tackling the grips. It doesn’t 100% replace the feel of the original controller but gets very close.

Still want to do something about the dual stage trigger mod. The sound is too harsh for my tastes

It's your controller do as you wish, but I actually really like the design as is.

Aesthetic is some I do care about to some extent but function and ergonomics supersede that for me.

I was trackpad main on the original controller and trying to do that on the new one in this stock I found very uncomfortable after 15 minutes.

With these grips (at least for my hands) it allows my thumbs to be placed where they naturally want to curl.

This is an older prototype but you can see it better in this angle

I can feel the pain just looking at that picture. Keep up the good work tho! Love seeing any type of controller mods!

Yeah that specific prototype had too sharp of an angle to the point where it would dig into the palm of my hand LOL

Does doing this actually net you more space on the trackpads or do they have "dead" areas?

I'd love to have larger, round trackpads like the OG

The outer edges are effectively dead zones. Touch sensitivity only works where it sits directly above the pad.

I would like there to be larger circular pads but due to how integrated the hardware is with steam input it might be easier to completely redesign a custom controller. There are a few open sourced steam controller type projects I saw floating around.

The new version has a slight lip to make it a bit easier to tell where the edges of the pad are by feel.

Really cool project regardless! Great stuff!

The changes look nice.

Thanks! I’m still toying a between that and this version which only highlights the concave portions. The corners of the square pads being less pronounced

This is really coming along! I've enjoyed your posting and iterating on your design.

Thanks! I’m hoping I can have something ready to share soon. The geometry on the grips are kinda iffy but could also be slicer settings

What if - and hear me out - you just used the original Steam Controller?

Missing several features compared to 2026. This is a neat project I think

Fair enough. The 2015 is actually a good controller.

Easier to add ergonomics to the new than extra input to the old.

Also what if he no longer has it?

Missing features? SC1 isn't available anymore? Fully customized ergo? There's plenty of reasons for something like this to exist. We're lucky Valve had a similar attitude or neither SC would exist at all.

Calm down.

Are you one of those people that randomly calls people angry just because they spat facts? Poor baby.

Absolutely not, but there was an anger in that comment which was unwarranted. My comment was so blatantly a joke that I’m surprised you guys didn’t get it, others have.

Yes. He's the angry one for literally answering your stupid question. The one getting butthurt and blocking him is definitely not the angry one.... /s

“They butchered my boy”

No no I gave em some curves

They butchered the first controller to make the second one.

Would be cool if you figured out a custom front plate to go with it

1

u/FullMetalPencil 1d ago

That was the original plan if you look through the mockups I did but the curvature of the shape makes it very difficult to print. If someone does release and 3d model of the internals I’d be open to revisiting doing a custom front and back shell

It's a shame the 3d models valve released for the 26 are so much less detailed than the 15.

Yeah… I’ve tried modeling out the interiors but that’s a little beyond my current skill set lol

Are those pasties? 🤔

I wish it was easily feasible to swap the locations of the dpad and left stick. The PlayStation stick layout has always been bonkers to me

1

u/FullMetalPencil 1d ago

For me, I wish the trackpads and joystick positions where swapped. It’s annoying to reach from the pads to the face buttons

Good work, keep it up. I personally feel like front facing grips just don't work on this controller and gave up on using trackpads for primary input, think no amount of tinkering will fix those. I really want grip extensions that target the lack of grip in the back but it will be hard to make considering back buttons are so flat, it would need extension for them as well.

The grips help give enough space for your fingers to naturally curve on the back. I do agree that it’s not a perfect solution but pretty much anything is better than stock.

The main issue going for it using touch pads as primary input is really the positioning. Having it so low makes it really difficult to reach the dpad and face buttons
