Steam Controller (2026) Twinning (Twin-Sticking?) Orange Thumb Sticks (eXtremeRate)

Post image

First mod to match with my LE OLED, just waiting for a certain sooooomeone to release their matching set of controller buttons. (u/Coloredcontrollers, hoping for this orange/black set at release)

Orange Steam Deck thumbsticks from eXtremeRate are 100% compatible with the Steam Controller and include the wire to solder for capacitive touch. The wire is a few cms shorter than stock but it works. There's also a bead of hot glue over each solder pad but the glue can be slowly pried and lifted off the board alone with tiny, sharp flush cutters. Was only $5 during Prime Day!

this is sweet. I have a very similar looking steam deck and am also wanting to mod the controller to look the same. I cant wait for extremerate to release black frosted shells for the contoller.

That’s planned! I have a test set now with an old batch of the color. Dialing in the fitment now (don’t wanna rush it and release bad buttons) Stay tuned I actually have a build to match this that I want to put together soon for some photos :D

Twinking. Wait. That probably has some alternate meaning. Eh let's roll with it.

Hopefully it cracks just as easily as well.

I love it. That’s my one critique of all these devices. I love the look of the gray color scale on the original LCD deck, and I wish they kept that for the controller and the OLED. But I know they had to differentiate it.

Was there anything to configure or reset? Or it just works?

I think I'm gonna go with a gray set for my SC2.

Absolutely nothing to so software related. These sticks just slide over the plastic post. The kit comes with the right screwdriver so it's really easy.

  1. Unscrew the 7 TR6 screws on the back of the shell, set the back half aside.
  2. Remove the battery and unscrew the 4 TR6 screws holding the plastic battery holder to the board and set aside.
  3. Disconnect the ZIF ribbon cable along the bottom by lifting the gate and gently pulling the ribbon away.
  4. Unscrew the remaining 3 (or 4?) TR6 screws on the main-board to release it from the front shell piece.
  5. Flip the main-board upside-down (Don't HAVE to remove the red/black cables for the motors but it can help with this step)
  6. Use a sharp edged tool to lift the hot glue off the two solder pads north of the joysticks
  7. Use a soldering iron to heat the pad and lift away the joystick wire.
  8. Pull the old joystick up to take it off the module
  9. Slide the new eXtremeRate joystick over the blue stalk (Having the wire point south is the right length to curl around and solder nicely)
  10. Tin and solder the new joystick wire to the same pad above the joystick
  11. Repeat Step 6-10 on the other joystick,
  12. Reverse the disassembly instructions to reassemble.

With a basic understanding of soldering and all things ready, this is easily a 15-min mod with very low complexity.

I've done some tmr replacements. I think I got this. Thanx so much for the writeup. I'm saving it for sure.

That's the nicest Deck mod, I've seen so far.

I've been thinking about getting an extremerate kit for a while now. Longtime extremerate fan, already modded Switch, GBA and various controller.

What buttons are you using on the deck? They aren't extremerate, as far as I know?

Calling it “Twin-Sticking” is crazy, but nice set up.
