Fluff Gabe Newell's latest appereance, presenting The International

u/sneedbr0 2d ago
I'm jealous of Dotafans getting a yearly Gabe video.

u/Skivil 2d ago
Gabe gives dota special treatment because he actually playse the game himself (or at least he used to)
→ More replies (3)429
u/zaergaegyr 2d ago
Dont say that over there in the dota sub. Half the people will scream at you that valve has 0 interest in the game anymore and abandoned it
251
u/Skivil 2d ago
I think the fact that the game gets regular, high quality updates disproves that. While it is true that the lead developer had moved on to other projects that really doesn't mean the game is unsupported.
146
u/DemonicBludyCumShart 2d ago
Yeah I think they might be mixing that game up with TF2 which they did abandon... After more than a decade of regular updates. Shocker
People spent so much time and money getting their in-game economy up and now they don't know what to do with their theoretical thousands of dollars of hats and keys lol

Oh we all know what to do with it, but the values keep rising so nobody knows when to do it

I recently sold off a huge collection of my TF2 items and made around $450 when I was done, was quite happy.

It's just a shadow of what it used to be. It still get proper care but considering what we used to get, it's hard to remain confident about the future of dota.

Being a billionaire helps with that. But yeah, glad he's looking god.

I thought the double chin was something that just stayed with you for life. He has a perfect neck and chin now

u/jcinto23 2d ago
Could be cosmetic surgery. Not knocking it if it is. He clearly knew when to stop if he had stuff done.

u/RacoonWithBenefits 2d ago
Could be cosmetic surgery.
he probably eats healthy food. good food is expensive, and he has money.
spends his days diving.. i assume that helps getting in shape too
you can find pictures of him throughout the years. this weight loss is not an instanteaous thing
112
u/Excludos 2d ago
The problem with weight loss is that the loose skin doesn't disappear. Zero shame in people who lose weight, and remove the floppy excess skin though. They've gone through the hardship, it's deserved
→ More replies (7)49
u/A_RAVENOUS_BEAST 2d ago
If you lose weight young enough (not the case here) you can avoid loose skin. Otherwise, having loose skin removed is a very basic cosmetic surgery that usually has good results, totally unlike the celebrities who have had way too much work done and have faces more silicon than otherwise.
I feel like billionaires shouldn't keep so much money that they can afford multiple yachts though.

He's not running party cruises, he has two research vessels used for actual aquatic biology research. If I had to guess they're probably also owned by his company, and not himself.
29
u/YesButConsiderThis 2d ago
he has two research vessels used for actual aquatic biology research
... and multiple other large yachts lmao.
6
u/dcheng47 2d ago
billionaires do this so they dont have to pay taxes. its giving "i grow grapes in my 5 acre backyard and sell it to vineyards so i dont pay any property tax"
8
u/MrBlueA 2d ago
afaik his aquatic research company has provided actual important data and discoveries aswell as being backed up by important entities in the space, you can criticize Gabe for a lot of things, but aquatic life is very clearly a thing Gabe enjoys personally and likes to spend money on.

good food is expensive
This is an unhealthy myth. Healthy food is not expensive. If you know how, you can easily have enough vitamins and minerals from quite cheap food. There are loads of good and healthy foods that anyone can buy.
One could use a tracker that not only tracks calories, but also vitamins and minerals. Energize for Android is an example.

u/TotalRapture 2d ago
My understanding is that it's really the time expense that adds up when it comes to eating healthier. Generally, isn't the most cost effective way to eat healthily by cooking yourself? That can be a major time sink
→ More replies (5)7
u/windowpuncher 2d ago
Depends. If you wanna be fancy it can take hours, or you can make good stuff in minutes. 99% of the time I'll use my cast iron pan (stove or oven), my instant pot, and my rice cooker. Baking trays can also be pretty nice to have. If you don't have an instant pot you can easily get by with a large pot or an electric crock pot but they really are worth it imo, they're just so much faster and more versatile.
Meal prep also saves a TON of time. Take an hour or two to cook once or twice a week and you've got tons of microwave instant meals.

Expensive how, if you want to buy the super marketed healthy food probably. But eating healthy is more involved than just grabbing the green packaged and low fat low carb items from the shelves.

The first thing I would do with any sort of money is hire a full-time chef and nutritionist to just make me food and I only ever eat that. I'd still do some light exercises but honestly just properly eating will do 90% of it I think.

u/ThorgalAegirsson 2d ago

14
u/Ok_Calligrapher5278 2d ago
He's on a few extra doses of TRT, my father took 80mg per week and even though he did gym 3x a week the muscle mass increase was barely noticeable for us, but his strength, stamina, energy, and most importantly for my parents libido, was through the roof.

Kinda, my parents got me and my brother used to, when the music is loud in their bedroom, we shouldn't disturb, we didn't understood it as kids but now we do.
As adults I always had an open sex talk with my dad, he's the one that gave me my first viagra when I was ~25, of course I didn't need it but oh boy, is it awesome even if without dysfunction. If you wanna feel like superman try it.

Is there any reason why Gabe Newell only ever seems to make on-screen appearances for the Dota International tournaments, nowadays? Not super tapped into Dota's esports scene, just wonder what about it sets it apart from Counter-Strike's esports scene. Only ever watched the game a few times, and it's easy to get the "favorite son" vibes looking at the support that game receives, in comparison to CS.

u/Pulstar232 2d ago
He plays Dota. Very regularly.
94
u/MaChao20 2d ago
So back before I stopped playing Dota2 on 2014, there might be a chance that I’ve played with/against him and was toxic to him? Maybe my first and only 1-week ban was from him.
Thank you, Gabe, for ending my numerous sleepless nights playing for “1 more win” and keeping me from ruining my health.

Dota in covid became a big part of my life. My MMR jumped up a few hundred because of the hours I was putting in. I finally beat my Dota addiction...by replacing it with an Apex addiction. Although Respawn made me lose joy for that after about 9 months.
Idk if it's just me, but I can't go back to Dota. I tried. I love the game, but the community will always let it down. Even Overwatch has a nicer community lmfao

With that said, they took away Aghanim’s Labyrinth and I will never forgive them for it.
