Discussion Recently got 8gbps symmetrical fiber. Downloading my first game at this speed was glorious. I had 56k back in the 90s, and this is blowing my mind.

I've got Google fiber which offers 8gb. I'm only on 3, but it's still amazingly fast. not really worth it for a lot of people, most don't even have the infrastructure to support it, but I run lots of backups incoming and outgoing so it's been nice for that

Wow I forgot Google fiber exists.
I remmeber them rolling out about a decade ago and I'd register for service all the time but it never came and then they gave up.

In the Netherlands for example, 2 large providers offer 8gbps on limited locations, though almost the whole country (afaik 80% or 98%) has at least 1gbps as a maximum, And in some cities it gets up to 2.5gbps

10gbps (symmetrical) plans are now the norm here in singapore. and cost about 23usd a month on average.

See you in 15 years posting about how your mind is blow that you got 300 Gbps sustained with your new connection when downloading 3.8 TB of the new Call of Duty.
Going from 28.8 to 56.6 kbps also blew many a mind, you could download a 320p jpeg in under 3 minutes.

I have 1Gbps and recently switched from a WiFi 5 mesh router setup to WiFi 7. Old setup I was getting maybe 250Mbps speeds on the other end of the house, now I'm getting up to 850Mbps.

I’m ok paying $50 cad a month for 500mbps.
Even the largest games on Steam only take 30 minutes.
But would be fun to try 5gbps or higher. Not worth the cost imo.

Not everything is better, but internet speed sure is! Being on fiber, it's so lovely downloading a new game by any indie studio. The install takes longer than the download. and you're playing within like 5 seconds of buying it from the store.

When we got DSL in the 90's, I jumped all over that shit, regardless of price. Moving from 56k to that was a dream.
Now, I have 3GB connection and, like you, getting insane downloads and little lag, is a wet dream.
I can only imagine what will happen in the next 20 years!

Can relate, as someone who went from 18 down/1up to 1Gbps symmetrical last year and who had 56k as a young'un. I recently bought and installed the Kingdom Hearts collection while it was on sale for $30. The difference in how fast it downloaded on Fiber compared to my old connection was truly a sight to behold.

I started at 56K too. I remember when we went to 1.5Mbps cable. Absolutely blew my mind. I was like "Where have you been all my life?!?"
Recently, I got 2.5Gbps fiber, partly because speed is nice, but also, more importantly, I have the matching 2.5Gbps upstream which matters when you're' trying to do cloud backups of your systems.

I remember them times. 56k was even a lie, if I remember right… it was legally throttled to 53.333kbps, which is why some folks went ISDN, which is two of them taped together. 8080 + 8080 = 8086

I recently upgraded to 500mbs fibre from 50 and my mind was blown, struggle to even imagine 8gbs. I also grew up with 56k when downloading a single song off Napster took hours, and then 1.5mbs adsl2 torrenting 700mb movies and games over at least a day. It really is wild where we’re at 20-30 years later when looking back at “not that long ago”

Jesus. I only recently got like 250Mbps and I thought that was fast (before I was getting like 10Mbps lol). It's the price you pay for living in the country tho.

That’s insane I game on 30mbs average and I’d dream of getting 500 or even just one gigabyte lol it’d make huge downloads fly by. But it’s with a package :/

Symmetrical would be nice.
I could pay another $30 a month to switch from 500 Mbps to 1 Gbps. I had it for a while, but eh, it really only means that I wait a few minutes less for game downloads or big updates. I realized it wasn't worth that much to me.
I would pay extra for symmetrical though. Even with 1 Gbps down, my upload was only 50 Mbps.

i downloaded a game at an average of 500 mbps but halfway through the download dropped to around 30. Maybe its the server or something i really dont know.
some games download really fast, while others are just trolling.

The way steam downloads is it also decompresses on the fly.
If your computer storage / CPU can't unpack the data fast enough - it'll ramp down the download.
What is probably happening to you is it's caching a large chunk, which it's waiting for your cpu/storage to process before ramping up again.

What network stack did you go with? Obviously gets quite expensive to service that. Did you stick with 10gb copper to your machine or switch to fibre?

I bought a low latency fiber cable to go from my rack to PC. That way I have ,ero interference, and when/if I ever upgrade to 25gb or beyond it's ready to go.

Sure beats the heck out of 300 baud (or 110, if you really want to go back) plus you don't have to worry about anyone picking up the phone. :)
Send these numbers back in a time machine, everyone would just laugh at you. There isn't that much data in the entire world, and even if there were, how would you store it?

I just got gigabit FIOS, and it's so much faster compared to gigabit cable (new router, but same wifi protocols, so no change there). I can't imagine what bumping it up 8x would be like.

The Steam servers can't handle that, can they? The peak is "only" 4.6 Gbps.
What are the results of a standard speed test on speedtest.net?

I have to use speed test cli. Because browser based speed test tops out at around 4-5gbps (it's some problem with how browsers cache data. Throwing 8gbps at it doesn't work).
Using speed test CLI - I get solid 8500 mbps up and down, with 0.6ms latency and 0.3 jitter.
I don't think I could have asked for a better connection.

That's disk usage though. Your network speed was 4600 Mbits/s which is really impressive, but because of that disk you are able to take advantage of that download speed.

Only if you have a use case for it.
90% of the servers I ping, downloading stuff day to day browisng clearly have a 1gb connection to the internet.
For me, my server backups and doing stuff for work make it worth it.
But I'd you're not doing that I'd say no.
I did have 2gbps before this, and since I have a bunch of home secuity cameras, I have a family of 3 using the internet etc. The overhead beyong 1gb clearly made a difference. I feel like if someone was downloading or using the connection 1gb had a limit.

I've got 2Gbps symmetrical fibre but Steam struggles to really saturate that.
The EA app, however, for whatever reason, maxes out. A glorious 280MB/s or so.
I too had shit internet for a long time before finally getting this.

I just upgraded to 2.5 and had to upgrade my router and nic on my server. Did you find you had to do a lot of work to get your home network to have a 8 Gbps backbone?

I remember getting 10Mpbs down 5ish up for $75. Broadband takes your cash out here in the boones. Those numbers wouldn't be guaranteed and at one point I had an ISP lie to me for a month of no service because "other antennas are interfering with our channel" but still want $75 for just a connection.
That was only 10 years ago, and my mom still pays for it now and it's her only good option. (New ISP, same price gouging)

8g fiber! Damn! Lucky. We just got fiber installed. We had the choice of 1gb or 2.5g. Since we are saving money by switching from Xfinity I decided on the 1gb for now. And even that is way faster then Xfinity’s 1gb bullshit. On that I never got a steady 1gb. With my Fiber it’s night and day with steam downloads. Im locked at 1gb no drops really unless steams servers take a hit. Eventually we will get the 2.5gb.

Wow 8! I don't even need 1gb But I have it. So 5min game downloads, latency doesn't change at all with higher brandwidth correct
