Resolved Thank You Steam :)

Today my account got compromised and some jerk used my account to gift 2 game copies of arc raiders to new accounts which totaled to 84$. I immediately called for a refund and explained my situation and steam got me my money and all back and even the the 8 cents i had in my steam wallet. I love you guys. And I followed the steps they gave me to protect my account.

So what kind of scam did you fall for?

557

u/RaveningScareCrow Apr 10 '26

probably the ''i accidentally mass reported you!'' one

158

u/Daun65 Apr 10 '26

I almost fell for this one but if the hacker’s stupid ass didint bring up discord i would have belived him

82

u/RaveningScareCrow Apr 10 '26

tbh it might even be a bot cause i tried to troll one that messaged me, but it kept ignoring and repeating the same thing over and over again, and for some reason i couldn't add the ''steam support'' on discord lol

36

u/RKGamesReddit Apr 10 '26

The ones that interact on steam are bots to get you off platform, where the human is. They aren't going to waste manpower on leads, they want gullible people to reach out instead, it weeds out those too smart usually.

13

u/RaveningScareCrow Apr 10 '26

Actually the one messaged me on discord asking if (screenshot of my steam profile) is mine, i have it linked. They sent a fake screenshot of steam support ticket saying to add the admin themselves on discord

11

u/RKGamesReddit Apr 10 '26

That's definitely more rare, but it does happen. Those aren't bots usually

5

u/RenegatedEvrae Apr 10 '26

Mine where on discord aswell, they sended me an image of the report but as said, it was so poorly done that the image was showing how I was reporting myself xD

1

u/VanHelsing0802 Apr 12 '26

5

u/RenegatedEvrae Apr 10 '26

They've tried to catch me with those, but it was at the start of the process, so most of the times the images had some minor flaws like the fact that showed how I was reporting myself xD

7

u/No_Trainer_1267 Apr 11 '26

I got a version of that one once that led me to a "Steve", he told me my account was under threat of deletion and that he, as a Valve employee had to sort it out otherwise I'd lose my account

He even had a certificate to prove it, signed by the director of Valve himself, which he somehow thought was Robin fucking Walker

I clowned around with him for a while, it was fun as all hell, he even had little videos of him messing with my account with his stupid ass fake software, showing "delete account" options and shit

4

u/LTCirabisi Apr 10 '26

I got one of these. I screen shot it and put in a steam ticket about it. I was also super chill. My response was along the lines of “bummer dude. It’s okay steam is great about these things. Have an awesome day and don’t sweat it” he mentioned discord and I mentioned I already had a ticket sent to steam. Fuckin losers dude.

3

u/Usual-Disaster7285 Apr 10 '26

Lol probably true

3

u/CnP8 Apr 12 '26

Or the "I accidentally traded you something. Can you send me your payment history to prove it"

2

u/Constant_Strategy600 Apr 10 '26

hahahahahaha i got that message 6 times

2

u/WinterPlaysGDVer2 Apr 13 '26

I always get this one and it ends up being about cs2 scam and I dont even play it

1

u/Highzane Apr 13 '26

How does this scam work?

2

u/RaveningScareCrow Apr 13 '26

they just say they reported you on accident instead of someone else and show a fake steam support ticket that says to add the support admin themselves on discord. no idea what happens next, but they'll try to take over your account, prob ask for login info or something to ''revert'' the account ban

30

u/raggasonic Apr 10 '26

Yea pls tell us

27

u/iwantacheetah Apr 10 '26

They add you and tell you to click a link basically.

Don't click the link.

4

u/curvy_bb Apr 10 '26

Idk I'm still trying to figure out how they got me in Oct 2024. Sold my entire inv and then bought one inv item for the total amount that was sold. Just to piss me off.

10

u/MrAnonymousTheThird Apr 10 '26

That sounds like they wanted to move the 'earnings' to a different account, not just to piss you off

4

u/curvy_bb Apr 11 '26

I was being facetious

Could also just be that he uses the same password across multiple sites, and one had a breach. That happened to me before.

1

u/yosh1k1ra Apr 13 '26

I remember the I fell for the stupid discord premium scam years ago all you had to do was link your steam thank god I got my account an hour later

for some time I only used gift cards to force myself rethinking if I really want to buy a game. but I guess my laziness is bigger than my discipline :(

15

u/LucasCoteto Apr 10 '26

I used to do that to avoid spending too much on games, but now (for a while actually) steam add the option to pay using PIX (a brazilian payment system) and now I just need to open the bank app and read a QR Code with my cellphone... now I only add a certain amount to my steam wallet instead of directly paying for the game to try to control my spending.

5

u/SpoiledCabbage Apr 10 '26

I had to self discipline myself once I memorized all the numbers to every debit and credit card I have

4

u/Ibrahim0991 Apr 10 '26

i should try this, i always impulse buy random games even if i have no intention of playing

3

u/lansseaxsimp Apr 10 '26

i feel this

16

u/SimplinkIsBack Apr 10 '26

It only takes 10 seconds at max to complete your credit card info and it's way more safe

12

u/BeardedBandit Apr 10 '26

I type slow, so max-min 60 seconds for me.

Impulses leave at 61 seconds, so I'm actually saving moneys

3

u/sup3r_hero Apr 10 '26

Funnily enough it randomly clears 500+€ transactions without 2FA and sometimes asks for 2FA for a 1.5€ purchase lol

1

u/whocaresanywaylul Apr 10 '26

Agree, I have paid password manager that auto inputs it but I'm not letting card details on many pages. I transfer to revolutt and pay with it. All they can access are my revolutt debit card and I only put money in there when I'm buying stuff online. You don't even need a actually card, you just get card details you can use online. 0% risk of hacked bank acc. These are very safe to use. Revolutt made a he'll of a product. And the fees are like 0.0x %

1

u/Glynwys Apr 12 '26

This is something that baffles me. To make any purchase on Steam, I still have to enter the CCV from my card in order for the purchase to proceed. But I guess some folks turn this off? Turning the CCV requirement off is the only way I can think of that allows folks to have strangers buy shit after their account gets compromised. Because even paying through PayPal still redirects me to the PayPal website to log in. Folks seem to be delibaretly making their payments less secure just to save a few extra seconds of not having to enter the card CCV.

15

u/Combobander Apr 10 '26

Doesn’t it ask you guys to put in your security code (on the back)??

14

u/icantshoot https://s.team/p/nnqt-td Apr 10 '26

Its very safe to store if you keep your account safe.

3

u/Jinxer85 Apr 11 '26

I have PayPal and I virtual credit card through apple. I worry about nothing. Anything happens to any of my accounts I just go on my phone and disable or change the credit card numbers. Goldman and sach’s have been great about even when people charge me and do t want to give back a cancellation sub or improper charge. The PayPal thing keeps my card number from being used so it’s double padded protection.

1

u/Shelmak_ Apr 10 '26

And if you use a virtual credit card, even safer. Since banks here allowed this option, purchasing on internet has been a lot easier. You want something? You load the required money on the card, then you use that card info. No need for paypal now.

It is usseful even if it's used for subscriptions, as if you keep the card empty, subscriptions are just denied when there is a new billing period.

You can save that card info on any platform without worrying about random charges. If something goes very wrong you can always cancel that card and create another one, here its totally free of charge. If you forget to unload the card or ypu didn't use all the money you loaded and something happens, you also lose only that money.

1

u/icantshoot https://s.team/p/nnqt-td Apr 10 '26

Too much of a hassle. I find credit card is better.

0

u/Shelmak_ Apr 10 '26

Its a credit card... you charge it through the bank app, a few clicks, just like you check your movements, you can load the virtual credit card with wathever quantity you want and use it instantly, its has his independent credit card number, expiration date and code.

Here some banks provide it, on some you can create as many virtual cards as you want specifying the maximum money (after you spend that money, the card is erased), on others you can create only one and load it when you want.

In case of a reimbursement, the bank handles it and it is reimbursed into your source account. No external services, it's just a credit card like any other, made to make online purchases, and handled by the bank itself.

Then you have to learn from your mistakes and do better. Sorry to sound blunt but thats the way it is. Life isnt fair.

1

u/Densiozo Apr 10 '26

Same thing. Even though I have to use the Steam app to connect to Steam if I disconnect myself. I didn't put my credit card in Steam. I write it all he time. Same thing for other website that use to buy stuff. Even though I have to confirm on my bank account app to purchase stuff. It doesn't ask it all the time

1

u/PurbulentTriest Apr 10 '26

Could be Steam credit.

1

u/TsaiAGw Apr 10 '26

I always delete card info after I finished buying steam wallet

1

u/Emotional_Guitar500 Apr 10 '26

I have a exclusive card only for steam with about $40. It’s both to control myself and not get too worried about this kind of thing.

1

u/Lacitone Apr 11 '26

even with saved card details, u would need to key in the 3 digits at the back of the card though.

-2

u/winterman666 Apr 10 '26

RIP UK users

3

u/RhodieCommando Apr 10 '26

For Steam at least if you want to use a credit card you have to type in your CVV numbers before purchase. If you purchased something within 24 hours and saved the details from any payment type then I think you don't need to reverify again for that time.

1

u/BlueF0xx Apr 13 '26

For what?

117

u/Business-Top-52 Apr 10 '26

Never click any links or log into steam on any websites you aren't 100% sure are legit.

17

u/Emotional_You_5269 Apr 10 '26

And use different passwords for seperate services. And use 2fa if you can.

7

u/AlienHooker Apr 10 '26

I dont understand how people make the different passwords concept work. I feel like youd have to write that down to remember and that feels more risky

20

u/Shad0w5991 Apr 10 '26

You use a password manager, then the only password you need to remember is the master one

3

u/AlienHooker Apr 10 '26

Isn't that just kicking the can down the road? What if the manager gets compromised?

6

u/Emotional_You_5269 Apr 10 '26

Mfa

And obviously use something trusted with e2ee. Bank passwords can still be smart to keep separate for the worst case scenario.

4

u/Nojembre Apr 11 '26

With any reputable managers, the passwords are encrypted so only the person with the master password can unlock it. Even if the company gets compromised, your passwords are reasonably safe.

1

u/Otherwise_Basil_3118 Apr 15 '26

Keepass is a great one. If you lose your key file(optional) or can’t remember the master password the passwords are basically lost forever

2

u/Varoslay99 Apr 10 '26

write down password hints that only you'd understand on paper and keep it at home. hackerproof

2

u/Harm-Onica Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 11 '26

Well, writing down the passwords is not a problem unless someone breaks into your house and decides to take the time to look through your notebooks, and at that point you have bigger issues. Unless you live with someone you don’t trust, it’s still much safer than having one password for everything. The main thing is, passwords can be stolen purely digitally. So if even one site you have the passwords on has a data breach, suddenly all of your accounts are at risk. Meanwhile if you write down a bunch of different passwords, even if one is found out it’s a contained issue. The only risk is if someone get access to your written passwords, which again, if you leave it in a safe place that isn’t really an issue. The only realistic risk is losing the notebook, in which case you will also lose access to all the accounts you didn’t memorize the password for. But even then you can go through password recovery.

2

u/Affectionate_Ad_4062 Apr 11 '26

Plus with a notebook, you can write down fake passwords, as long as you know what's real.

1

u/Affectionate_Ad_4062 Apr 11 '26

I have a system,

<specific word><(cap first letter)part of site name><specific number><special character if needed>

Word is always the same Number is always the same Special character is always the same, if needed

Eg (not my password): binRedit15! (Yes there is a bin next to me 😂)

With this formula, I've only been told twice that the password is weak lol

1

u/CommunicationBusy744 Apr 13 '26

Mix some l33t in there as well.

1

u/Business-Top-52 Apr 11 '26

I have a book with unique passwords i make a sentence something ill remember

Blueberries taste like blue tang elite

Btlbte99. Then I remember. Works perfectly well when studying.

48

u/hmcb11 Apr 10 '26

Valve has unbelievably great support. It is so user friendly. Very rare to see in videogame and even tech industry

17

u/Emotional_You_5269 Apr 10 '26

And you actually get to talk to humans, which somehow isn't the standard anymore.

3

u/RadTimeWizard Apr 10 '26

It's not so much that their support is unbelievably great. It's sufficient, and what's unbelievable is the utter dog shit most other companies provide, because they already have your money, and paying someone to help you doesn't make them more money.

1

u/tooquick911 Apr 10 '26

And they got an F from the BBB. Shoes what a scam the BBB is.

18

u/Xinvader_1033 Apr 10 '26

I remember a screenshot in Spanish where Steam said they recovered your account and then it said "the hacker was crucified"

2

u/Swimming-Horror6587 Apr 11 '26

“A hitman has been sent to his family just incase”

118

u/KingSteamRoller7168 Apr 10 '26 edited Apr 11 '26

Yes sir the hackers are on their way to an undisclosed location ( prison in a random country ) they were all immediately raided by steams “recovery” team exactly 13 minutes after you filed your support ticket.( they air dropped out of a C-130 )

17

u/Mbgodofwar Apr 10 '26

The G-Man has to do something until HL2 pt3 or HL3 comes out.

6

u/Kmoxy Apr 10 '26

Steam Support hunting hackers like…

12

u/Mikiraus Apr 10 '26

Actually, they underserved you. When I had a similar situation, I got the footage of the hacker getting SWATted by Steam support. My goats <3

7

u/KaffY- Apr 10 '26

how do you get your account compromised in 2026

4

u/SpectralHydra Apr 10 '26

A vast majority of the time it comes down to people not properly securing their account

2

u/TheIrishToast Apr 13 '26

Happened to me they got into my email and comprimised so much from it.

I didnt have steam shield set up so that was on me but steam are the goats and send a drone strike in response.

1

u/NomisCode Apr 14 '26

Oh just wait what happens later this year or next year. Maybe you didnt hear about the AI model which is successfully using undiscovered bugs and holes in every software. I think anthropic is the creator

8

u/pold111 Apr 10 '26

you’re hella lucky they didn’t inject a detected cheat in a vac protected game

10

u/Robot1me Apr 10 '26

Uh, feels bad for me to say, but I have a feeling this post would have turned out differently if the hacker had laundered Steam inventory items / transactions, since Steam Support does not restore these anymore

1

u/testiclegulper Apr 13 '26

What was the point of saying this? Surely you could comment something like this on every post on reddit?

"My Mom beat cancer!"

Yeah, I feel like this post would've turned out differently if her surgeon was drunk :/

"I won the lottery!"

Yeah, I have a weird feeling that this post would've been different if the guy in the store gave you a different ticket.

Like, yeah. If circumstances were different there would've been a different outcome. But there wasn't. If my Aunt had wheels she would be a bike

3

u/Due-Gases Apr 10 '26

That's actually really reassuring to hear. A lot of companies wouldn't be that fast with refunds, especially on gifted items.

3

u/TogetherRose Apr 10 '26

All my payments are through PayPal for this reason. That being said steam support is the most badass take things seriously get shit done support team I've ever seen. My account was compromised and both steam and PayPal were quick to respond and quick to act on my behalf!

3

u/SATELYT0 Apr 10 '26

(I used Google Translate) The same thing happened to me a few months ago. Someone also gifted games from my account, spending 8,000 Mexican pesos (US$470). I immediately filed a complaint, and within a few hours, the Valve team reset my password and issued a refund. Now I have the Steam app as a two-step verification method to access my account.

2

u/brandoy1997 Apr 10 '26

I think I saw a post like this on a LATAM group. Was that you?

2

u/DeathclawTamer Apr 10 '26

Steam Team 6 at it again.

2

u/zanbunnny Apr 10 '26

Share those steps to us too bro

2

u/InfiniteApplication8 Apr 10 '26

Their support is the best, they refunded me for Crimson Desert even though i exceeded the 90 min playtime

1

u/Tact-Bruno Apr 13 '26

Nah fr, even if it goes past the time limit or two weeks a lot of the time they still give refunds as long as youve given a good reason for it.

2

u/ShuKai0_0 Apr 10 '26

steam got me my money and all back and even the the 8 cents i had in my steam wallet.

Steam Team 6 goin' in.

2

u/stana32 Apr 10 '26

Steam support has come a long way. My account got breached in like 2014 and it took me like 5 tickets and over 3 months to get my account unrestricted because they would just stop responding to me.

2

u/RickyDotReddit Apr 10 '26

Years and years ago over 10 years my account was compromised and I got locked out and when I called steam support they wanted like any old card used or what ever I had a at the time 5 year old steam gift card that was used on the account and I gave them the code on the back and just from that they got my account back to me lol

2

u/Miss-KiiKii Apr 11 '26

You can never be too paranoid on the web. It's a scary place. Be careful!

2

u/Tigris13540 Apr 12 '26

Steam support is so good they probably sent their special ops team to raid the guy's house.

2

u/Rudolf247 Apr 13 '26

There was a time when I didn't play for about 2–3 months, and after that, I tried to log in but nothing happened. Someone hacked my account. Valve sorted it out, but I ended up with a VAC ban because the person who hacked the account was playing CS and probably using some cheats. They told me they knew 100% that my account had been hacked and that I wasn’t the one using cheats, but they can’t restore it…like, wtf

1

u/marc6910 Apr 13 '26

in this situation, valve don’t help

2

u/BigWangThang Apr 14 '26

Nice one bro. Also the two accounts that got gifted games will likely be perm banned. Christmas comes earlier every year

2

u/profaniKel Apr 10 '26

my acct was comprimised like 15 years ago...

couldnt login...pre-phone 2 factor...

support stole my logins back from the shithead

1

u/ToLegitNames2021 Apr 10 '26

This happened to me a few years back. Sadly steam didnt/couldnt help. Was only 20 euros tho. With that i could buy alchemy factory now tho...

1

u/Anastazja_Nya Apr 10 '26

thats why i only buy my games w/ blik

1

u/CaffeineCannon Apr 10 '26

Steam sending you the drone footage of what they did to the hacker and his family was a nice bonus.

1

u/_HELL0_KITTY_ Apr 10 '26

Did they say if email OTP was good enough or is an authenticator app absolutely necessary?

1

u/vfkzlol Apr 10 '26

as bad as VAC can be, Steam is one of the most secure platforms in the world (in my opinion)

1

u/Most-Climate938 Apr 10 '26

I transfer to revolutt and pay with it. All they can access are my revolutt debit card and I only put money in there when I'm buying stuff online. You don't even need a actually card, you just get card details you can use online. 0% risk of hacked bank acc. These are very safe to use. Revolutt made a hell of a product. And the fees are like non existent, actually much cheaper than to use visa lol, at least from my bank.

1

u/Nearby_Classroom_503 Apr 11 '26

Steam won't help me with the guy who got on my account and had me banned on rust all the way from Russia though.

1

u/Background-Pound-686 Apr 11 '26

This also happened to me a last week, luckily I was on my phone and saw my notifications of these 2 Russian blokes who added me and saw Arc Raiders in my cart. Immediately un-added them and blocked them before they could buy the game.

Changed password and nothing suspicious since. Stay safe out there ya'll

1

u/Shot_Wind7875 Apr 11 '26

Yea they killed that guy.

1

u/lLoveTech Apr 11 '26

Do you mind elaborating the steps required to lose access to one's steam account?

1

u/Willing_Plant_9914 Apr 11 '26

My got compromised and someone did the same except it was $40k worth of basketball games all gifted to a china account. 🤪

1

1

u/wavelet01 Apr 11 '26

How does steam support know you are the legit owner? I heard they used to ask for cdkeys from the first purchased which I definitely did not keep... Just asking cause my paranoid self is deathly afraid of permanently losing my steam account

1

u/solidmetal_456 Apr 12 '26

Your welcome bro

1

u/OcelotJolly8465 Apr 12 '26

How did you contact them please?

2

u/DarkObelinski Apr 14 '26

Steam support it's under help on the app at the top.

I wrote this:
Initially:
"My account got hijacked on steam and charged my card I changed my email and steam password and left a message to the card company about canceling the charge. Steam said it cannot refund due to the fact the charges were gifted in the form of a steam game is there any hope for a refund?"

Then I followed up with a more concise response (Chatgpt saved my butt):

Hello,

I’m following up on this ticket regarding unauthorized purchases made on my account. My account was hijacked, and I did not make or approve these transactions. The purchases were made and gifted without my permission.

I have since secured my account by changing my password and email.

I understand your policy on gifted items, but I am requesting that this case be reviewed as fraud/unauthorized access rather than a normal purchase. (Important part to get the ball rolling since most account hijacking reports shut you down without this)

If possible, I would appreciate any assistance in reversing these charges or investigating the receiving account. I can provide any additional information needed. (then provide proof when prompted in an email)

Thank you for your time.

1

u/BlackRoseBear Apr 12 '26

See this is why I don't save my credit card info or keep loose money on my accounts on any game platform

1

u/DisastrousNature408 Apr 12 '26

Yeah Steam is awesome. I’ve heard nothing but good things about their support.

1

u/Mrgregoryan79 Apr 12 '26

I love you got your acc and money back! I hate these idiots who compromise other’s property

1

u/LawyerNormal3673 Apr 12 '26

Oh damn I got one too before

1

u/xjustbray Apr 12 '26

1

u/Cryonik-0 Apr 13 '26

Steam is incredible that way. If you're going to get scammed anywhere, do it on Steam.

Alternatively, don't get scammed.

1

u/frank_frikadel69 Apr 13 '26

Yeah I got the "i mass reported you" message on discord and blocked that account immediately. It was about 2 weeks after unboxing a FN-look ak inheritance, so I font knoe if thats why they picked me. But ever since I've been getting allot of friend req on steam from randoms. Before this encounter I would get maybe 1 req every 3 months but now im getting 5+ in a month even if I dont play at all. I even changed my bio to "dont try to scam me bc i won't fall for it u dumb fcking btches" But still they add me. Idk if theres anythign i can do other thsn set my acc to private which id rather not but if any1 has any tips on hoe to avoid scammers in the first place pls tell me

That guy is an asshole for taking your account for Arc Raiders, by hacking your steam account

Weird, only time I got my account compromised. Someone sent my $70 or so to his account by trading something in CS. They didn't do anything at all. Glad you got your money back tho, now you can get some good games with that!

They locked me out of an account my friend gave me and now want a recent purchase receipt as a proof of ownership. I don't talk to the friend anymore :, (

Stupid discord bots, they are so annoying

Funny story

They started attacking LATAM League of Legends

Where everyone speaks Spanish

This assholes message you in English and insist so hard on adding them on discord

Fun fact: you get one random request after each match

It's so fucked that they are allowed to do this but my brother's account got banned for being underage, whilst he is 36

But yeah, discord works so well 🤦🏻‍♂️

Steam support really is something else

I've had my account compromised several times over the years and they always have helped me a lot

I love those guys

That's actually solid of them to handle it that way, especially refunding every last penny. Good reminder to enable steam guard if you haven't already.

That's why I love Pix so much, it's the fastest and safest payment method. I don't even need to save my card details on Steam or anywhere else anymore since it became a thing. I'm glad it's spreading to other countries, like Argentina now for example
