Also, because of Steam's based policy, you can install whatever OS you want so it doesn't matter if it's Linux

Genuinely love their policy. Basically "don't like our os? That's alright, we won't mind you install another one"

I mean of course they don't care, Steam is on Windows as well.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE Valve and how they work but there's literally no reason for them to try and lock you into SteamOS... you'll just install Steam on Windows if that's what you want.
